Just looked at your pics again and realized that while the motorized retractable rolling screens I posted earlier might work for three of your four arches, you need something else at the stairway arch so that you have a way for people to come and go. I have seen wonderful room screens in magazines where those screens were actually constructed by the owners to work in with their decor's color, shapes, textures, theme etc. They basically took hollow core doors (without holes for the doorknobs); painted them to their desired color -- and then took pages or scenes from calendars or magazine pages and decoupaged them onto the door. OR simply covered them in fabric and then added a row of nailheads around the edges. And then hinged the doors together using "piano" hinges. Hello, I need some way to block out a neighbor's high windows from peering onto my deck. If I had nice looking 7.5'-8' screen it would need to be able to span 8' along each side from the corner to block them out. I thought about adding something that would have to be built into the deck frame but I just replaced the deck boards and added joist protection because my first priority is to have this deck last another 20 years. I don't want anything that could cause water to be held against structural components since I live in rainy Seattle. So now I would like to see something relatively lightweight like a folding privacy screen that would be aesthetically pleasing and could be attached to the railings. I found a bamboo screen panel that is a bit dull looking and putting those 16' along the deck corner might be boring but the real problem with them is they are only 6' tall. Stain will be Messmer's Natural which will look yellow-orange (unfortunately all oil based deck stains have an orangish hue). Deck railing will be replaced and I think I prefer white if I could find an easy to maintain way to have them white. Deck railing support posts will be added versus this old way of doing the railing with just balusters holding it up. Railing is and will be about 42 inches high. The end of the deck in this photo is 8' (7' 10 3/4" boards there) wide and to block the ugly view the screen also needs to extend about 8' along the other side as well. The material you see there is my railing privacy screen folded up onto the railing to allow deck board installation. The deck extends about 12 feet to the right in the photo (20' long deck boards).

(Long) the reason I ask about the sill and covered porch is I’m in the process of designing a 15’ wide bifold door between a poolhouse and pool deck, and finding a big disconnect between the glam minimalist details in the online photos vs the reality of doing this in the mid-Atlantic in a nice way. Without many local examples or manufacturers I am trying to use Marvin’s bifold door, because I’ve spec’d their other windows & doors for years with excellent service. Having issues designing the details though, when the poolhouse wall is open I want no abrupt elevation changes at the floor level interrupting the smooth plane of material between inside and outside. The trouble is for Marvin’s standard sill “performance” detail it is a whopping chunk @ 2” high AFF and 10” wide that doesn’t show in photos but is in their technical documents. This high sill is in conflict with the idea of having a visually seamless plane of inside outside space. If there must be a large surface mounted sill IMHO there needs to be visual cues of pausing and then carefully stepping over a wide curb instead of creating a confusing situation of continuous flooring but a big trip hazard in the way. Marvin provides a nice detail for recessing the 2” channel of sill into the concrete floor when framing, but they are clear that this install will not be warrantied for water or air infiltration. I would like to use the recessed channel detail anyway and keep water away using proper slope and covered porch and a flush linear drain, but as you know our ”mild” mid Atlantic climate can dump 2 feet of drifting snow and hurricanes that will blow through a flush sill into any living space anyway. I could slope and waterproof the pool house similar to a garage and sweep out a watery mess if it happens, but was hoping to use the pool house as year- round living space for guests without flooding or infiltration worries.
