Cutting stainless steel (flue cover too long)
Comments (11)I ordered a long cover for our VAH b/c it was in stock and wasn't going to take as much time as a custom-length one. I did what chris_harper2 mentions- the duct and cover stick up in the attic about 9". I forget how I marked it before cutting the ceiling. I'd think it'd be pretty easy to make a template out of cardboard or plywood that'd be rigid enough for your purposes. Besides, a little caulk covers slight misses. Our flue cover, IIRC, has corner reinforcement tack welded at the ends. Cutting would've meant getting rid of the reinforcement and having a less-rigid cover. Also, if you're only talking about 3/4", you could take the hood loose and drop it just enough to mark the ceiling. To me, those options are simpler than finding someone to cut it and not mess it up. FWIW, plasma leaves clean edges, but I'm not sure whether it'd scorch. If you do slide the cover above the attic, I'd make a cover to go over the opening. Then foam or otherwise seal it in place so you aren't venting your kitchen into the attic except through the duct. I made one out of plywood and cut it in two so that I could put it over the top of the duct cover (and around the duct) after the whole thing was installed. Comments (1)Since no response was given, posting this to let it disappear. Quietest, oxy/acy or plasma. No, you can't cut with any accuracy with the gas torch, but it WILL melt the stuff apart. An old method of accurate cutting was to inject iron powder in the cutting port. Cut-off wheel in a grinder. Noisy unless you dampen(weight) the sheet. Sawzall with the right blade, noisy but quick, no sparks, a big + if you need a fire watch....See MoreCutting sheet stainless steel with saws
Comments (13)If I were cutting stainless steel I would use a 4 inch angle grinder with a (steel cutting disc )as apposed to a grinding disc, which is thicker, and used only for grinding edges or grinding down lumps or bumps on steel surfaces, or dressing off weld joints etc. You mention that you are fitting sockets within your stainless steel panel, what I would do in this case is to measure (scribe) the length by the breadth of the sockets on to the panel surface using a (black felt tip pen) and reducing by 1/8 of an inch at the four corners on the inner side and there by giving you a clean professional finish to the fitted socket when it is fitted .Now you are asking yourself how do I get nice clean cut corners? ItÂs very simple really, you use a drill with a 1/8 steel drill bit, some plasticine or putty and you create a little well at the 4 corners and fill the well with oil, engine/cooking /gear oil, you can even use water if you donÂt have the above , the reason for executing the above process is because the drill bit will heat up and melt ,the stainless steel being harder than the normal mild steel bit that we normally use. I hope my little titbit will be of some use to you in your project. Comments (4)You mean the Ruvati Roma sink RVH8350? The RVC model is a bundle of the same sink with a Ruvati faucet. Yes, Ruvati sinks are exceptional quality. I have been using a Ruvati Gravena sink for almost 3 years now. Solid sink: very heavy and thick. I don't have the Roma model with ledges for accessories, but for $469 thats a great deal for a 16 gauge sink with built-in cutting board and colander. Quality-wise Ruvati sinks are just as good as any major stainless steel sink brand like Kohler or Elkay....See Moregooseberry_guy
