Cleaning / Deordorizing Fat Mop

I have a fat mop which I love (looks like a pastry brush, but instead of bristles, it has strands which attract grease). DD and I made chicken tortilla soup Sunday night. Being Ms. Jack Spratt, she gave the fat mop a real workout! I tossed it in the dishwasher as always. However, it came out with the strands still reddish and smelling of cumin. A soak in some Biz and a second run through the dishwasher helped some, but there is still a tinge of red and a hint of cumin. Any suggestions on how to thoroughly clean the fat mop?

I'd soak in a strong solution of Dawn degreaser.
Then let it ride in the dishwasher for a few loads.

I use Berkely's Gum Cutter on a lot of things,
then use household degresser's.
Last, into the dishwasher.

Gum Cutter is a Cleaner, Degreaser used on auto parts and can be bought in an Auto Parts Supply.

Rhizo, I hope things are better ---- I had to do the same thing last year for an allergy to formaldyhde --- before you laugh too much, know it's in everything! Here's what has worked for me: Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap for washing dishes, hand laundry, hands, hair (only followed by a vinegar rinse), floors and woodwork. Trader Joe's eco laundry detergent + borax for really dirty loads. Kirk's Hardwater Castile soap for face + body. Vinegar + water + a little bit of essential oil (I use rosemary or mint) in a spray bottle for counter clean ups. Baking soda and water to scrub out sinks, tubs, teacups, etc. Now, I do miss harsh stuff when I'm trying to scrub out the tub, so sometimes I use Bar Keeper's Friend. I also use regular dishwasher detergent. Hope this helps. if you need to use natural shampoos and stuff, I have had great luck with Aubrey Organics (I buy it online). Also, any book by the woman called the Queen of Clean (just Google that) has good green tips.

Tumbled marble looks great, but needs special care. Yes, it should be sealed periodically with a good penetrating sealer. It should also be cleaned periodically with a neutral PH cleaner and a soft brush. It should also be dried, either with a fan or your towel after use. As to the soap, understand that bar soap contains animal fat as a filler and binder...with the possible exception of Dove. Use a neutral PH liquid soap and avoid the dreaded soap scum...you know what a glass door in the shower looks like? Put that on the floor and there you go....

Thanks everyone for chiming in. So, this is what I decided. I will test self clean again once the technician gets it working again. Reasons include: 1) so far, even though Whirlpool does have an upgraded blower for my model, they have not authorized that for my oven. Knowing that I have a known-to-be inferior part bugs me. 2) I lived without an oven for years, and now having a wonderful cooktop and countertop toaster oven, I can survive a while if the oven stays out of order for a while. 3) I'll have more confidence in the oven if it does survive one or two self clean cycles. After that, I might just stop using the feature esp. if I'm approaching the end of the warranty. 4) If the oven dies after three repairs, the lemon law kicks in. I guess I'll get a refund then. But to be honest, I have no idea if there is another oven that's reliable out there that can fit in my cut out, not to mention match somewhat the microwave oven that was installed in the cutout above. I'll worry about it when it comes to it. Oh, some of you suggested: test the self clean when the tech is still around. He suggested I do not. Because if the oven dies again, it's considered part of the same repair, which will delay the onset of the lemon law. So, wait until he is gone and has closed the case, I can test again. Thought I should share that knowledge with others. I know (after started looking into the issue) that self clean puts a lot of stress on ovens, and many don't survive, but many do as some users testified in the thread. I honestly think that in general, the Ikea/Whirlpool models are inferior to others because so far, even after I asked the question explicitly on IkeaFans forum, I have not seen a single user coming forward and said that had success with the oven and its self clean feature.

Chemically, there is NO WAY any household-approved enzyme can etch glass, porcelain or metal (if any enzymes can, you wouldn't want them in DW detergent or near non-chemists). Enzymes are protein molecules that break down other proteins, or fats, or carbohydrates to make them easier to remove from your dishes. Some sites claim "Today's detergent is designed to react with the proteins in leftover food. These proteins activate the enzymes that clean and remove soil. If there is little to no food on the dishes prior to being put in the dishwasher, the detergent cannot activate. It will largely remain in its crystal format, attacking your dishes, usually in the form of etching and fogging your glassware. This is chemically ridiculous ... purified dried enzymes, like other proteins, soften and dissolve readily in water, which automatically "activates" them. Think of how dried raw egg white behaves and that's how enzymes react to water. I can't think of a chemically plausible mechanism that would require dried food crud for a detergent to work properly. If you are seeing etched and fogged glassware, it's a water chemistry problem (hard water), maybe a water temperature problem, but don't blame undissolved, inactive enzymes. The soil acts as a pH buffer to the detergent. Also chemically implausible ... the type and quantity of food crud varies wildly between loads, so its buffering properties would also vary wildly. =========== I scrape the dishes, pre-wash any really crusty cooking pans and let the DW do its thing.

Vinegar! I'm still amazed with all you can do with this stuff. If you do the Dawn soak be sure and rinse and rinse again before putting it in the DW...if not you may have a suds flood on your hands.

Hey now, I just did that! I tossed an "empty" liquid soap dispenser into the dishwasher. Um.....bad idea but the kitchen floor is really, really clean.

A Lucy moment for sure Linda! Like Annie, the floor was really clean...LOL Another twist to this is we have old 8mm film(I think that's what it is called from 1970) when my Dad used liquid dishwashing soap in the DW while Mom was in the hospital after giving birth to my younger sister. We swept the suds out the sliding glass door out to the deck. It was a neighborhood event as some of the neighbors are in the film too.

Many thanks for all the suggestions and giggles. I would have responded sooner, but DH stepped off a curb wrong, fell, and broke his elbow. No cast and no surgery, but he has to keep it immobilized in a sling.

In my younger days I rented an apartment and decided that the dishwasher was not clean enough to suit me. I poured in a huge amount of Lysol and turned it on. I never knew Lysol would suds!

Then there was the time my grand daughter disappeared! They had just moved into a new house with a deep Jacuzzi in the master bath. Well, Meggie went to take a bubble bath, she was almost 6 at the time. she turned on the Jacuzzi and a cap full of Barbie Bubble Bath grew scarey big!

As suggested, swished the Fat Mop in Dawn, rinsed thoroughly and put back into the dishwasher. It is looking nearly new.

I'm sure bleach would take out the color, but I'm afraid of what it would leave behind.

Like the old joke, DH won't be able to play the violin after his elbow heals...but he couldn't play the violin before he broke it, either!

I though it was something really stubborn.

I heard similar Joke but it had to do with an older guy who just had open Heart Surgery and
his Marital Relations.

I don't mean his relatives.
