Faux copper Metal roof over bay windows

Hello,

I've just had a faux copper metal roof installed over my bay windows. The house is a cream colored stucco and the installers caulked the joint (where the new roof meets the stucco) with white caulk that they painted copper! I asked whether they could have used a caulk to match the copper and was told that "they don't make it." Is this correct? How will painting over white caulk hold up?

Im a Sheetmetal worker in Wisconsin. We use a product called Vulkem. A polyeurethane caulking which comes in just about any color. Sounds to me that they didnt want to get it for a project of that size. If I couldnt get it in that specific color I would have used clear.

I don't know that answer but you could get a clear paint or sealer of somekind and paint over the painted caulk and that would seal it.

The reason the house looks awkward and unfinished is that it is an assemblage of too many disparate shapes, forms and materials, none of which relate well to the others. For example, the two story bay in question is faceted with three exterior faces and backs into a taller gable shape. The bay is roofed with what appears to be a large and clumsy metal roof form. To the left is a tall, competitive second story bay which is rectangular in shape and capped with a hip roof composed of what appears to be asphalt shingles. The two shapes visually fight with one another. This sort of unthinking and random assemblage of shapes and materials continues across the entire front of the house. What to do? Begin by consolidating major shapes into a few simple and similar shapes. Thereafter, eliminate and consolidate materials and finishes so that they are complementary and not competitive and battling for dominance with one another. Hope this helps.

Thanks, everyone. That's what I felt, too, but good to know the sentiment here is the same. Hopefully, the GC will agree, too, when they see it Monday. I will ask the GC to have the roofer send someone else more experienced to redo it. I don't think the dents can be fixed, so perhaps they'll have to rip it out and start over. @eventhecatisaboy - I don't know what gauge was used, or what the proper gauge is. Copper Bay Window Roof

Hello, We recently moved into a house built in 2002, and the living room has a bay window with a copper roof. Recently, in a heavy rainstorm, our ceiling in there was leaking (luckily, right over the Christmas tree). I had a roof inpector take a look at the copper roof, and he said that it was the worst copper roof job he had ever seen. The roof meets the house behind the siding, which is allowing water to enter the home. The original installers also used caulk instead of soldering the seams. We currently have a proposal to have the copper roof replaced and soldered correctly, as well as the siding re-installed to achieve proper drainage -- to the tune of $2100! Does that sound right to everyone, or is there some simpler, more inexpensive way to go about this? Thank you!

Thank you Dave! I googled Vulkem and apparently there are several different numbers. They do come in a host of colors, including light and dark bronze, but, alas, NOT copper! Darn it! I had the white caulk around the copper painted to match, and it looks OK, but they really should have used clear if they couldn't get a decent match.

We are building a stucco house that calls for 2 bay windows and I would love to know what company you got your faux copper roofing from.

We don't want a real copper because of the staining on the stucco.

Any suggestions?

Sure.

The metal we selected came from Drexel Metals Corporation, 204 Railroad Drive, Ivyland, PA 888-321-9630. The name is "Metallic Copper". The other metal manufacturer that offers a faux copper is Atas, and it's called "Coppertone". Avoid that one, it doesn't have the metallic finish and doesn't look as authentic as the one from Drexel. Not sure if you are in PA, but the company that did my roof was Radick Corporation, and I highly recommend them. Their work was superior. Lee Radick is a man of extremely high integrity, just a wonderful experience - they also capped all of our wood trim, rafters, soffits, and fascia with metal for a totally maintenance free exterior.

I was wondering what kind of faux copper did you use? That is exactly what I want to do. Where would I get the faux copper and was it reasonable? Thanks, Linda

Paint on caulk will hold up fine, as long as it's paintable caulk. I would find out what kind of paint it was so you can repaint it when it starts to wear. Be sure to recaulk before you paint.

No caulk should be required.

Flashing and counter flashing are what keep water out.

While copper is not really cheap, it is still not all that expensive to use copper.
