Where to find best prices on white oak flooring?

Argh! I am so discouraged. Our home has white oak flooring on the main floor, and fir on the second. We knew there was wood under a couple of layers of other flooring in the kitchen and we hoped to salvage it, but last night we found out it's fir. Since we're opening up the kitchen to the (oak) dining room, and since fir is nowhere near durable enough for a family kitchen, we're going to have to replace it.

Do any of you know of any online flooring places with good prices on clear or select white oak?

Spam-free responses would be particularly helpful.

Lumber Liquidators looks to have some decent prices, but their best grade seems to be a mixture of #1/select, if I'm understanding correctly. I don't think we can get away with #1, given the grade of the flooring we're trying to match.

I just purchased 4" wide quartersawn white oak online from Hurst Hardwoods. It is beautiful, and I was able to specify the lengths I wanted. They were prompt and good to work with. I save a lot over the local lumberyards, sad to say because I was hoping to support them. I didn't feel too disloyal, however, because although Hurst is located in Florida, the flooring was milled in upstate New York and shipped to me in Connecticut for a very reasonable rate.

I'm was just throwing that out there but thanks for the insults. I expect no less from you. I have no idea where the OP lives. If you think there's something nefarious about my suggestion it's probably due to projection. Yes, LL does have some decent stuff. The OP asked for reasonable cost, not best quality. I've bought a few things there like legacy type products and older style Bamboo that's hard to find elsewhere now. LL has a lot of locations and one can visit one and determine whether a product is worth the cost. In your headlong rush to be nasty, as usual, you seem to be ignoring that a major portion of what's sold in the US is made in China. Just because it's made in China doesn't mean it's crap, though I'd prefer something domestic (and not cheap). The majority of LL lawsuits I'm aware of pertain to laminates, not wood. I think they had one regarding illegal wood sourcing also but that wouldn't pertain to quality. You last paragraph is great. Too bad you couldn't be less abrasive in the first one.

@Joe Macker. I added protective film to my windows to block UV rays from causing damage. The advantage is that this protects everything in my room. I had damage to my furniture - both cloth and wood from the light streaming in. I have an Eastern exposure. You can't tell that there is any kind of protective film on the windows as mine are not tinted - or tinted so slightly that there is almost no difference but they are rated for close to 99% blocking of the UV rays.

Checking, I will get back to you, Whatever flooring you get it may be worthwhile to purchase a box to lay it out and see the color little bit more difficult with a small samples I originally had a different color pIcked and when it delivered they stated that the colors have been darker so they brought a few boxes in and we declined chose another color that we had Purchased a box and when came they were quite a bit more red tone then got these and love love love them These are also a pretty thick engineered floor which would enable you to have more refinishing if you needed

Can you ask around locally? We ended up getting a great deal on our white oak for our new house. If you ask at your local lumber yard they may be able to give you some ideas of who to contact. I have never ordered hardwood online but I have sure looked at alot of it. Also try posting on the flooring forum.

Back when we started looking LL did have the select white oak, though that may have changed. Best bet is to actually go into the store, though. Beyond that, definitely call your local shops. That's what we did and wound up with a great deal. We also looked online but once shipping was added the cost was way beyond local shops.

We seriously considered ordering from Sheoga Flooring. (sheogaflooring.com) I'd read great things about them on the flooring forum (can't say the same for Lumber Liquidators). They answered emails promptly and sent samples quickly.

Oh, I just investigated further, and put in your state and hit 'request for quote' and it says,
"Please contact our distributor in your state that will offer a full variety of Sheoga hardwood flooring products.

Apparently they don't have a distributor in my state so I had to talk directly to them for my quotes and info. Maybe this means you might save on shipping...Since no matter where in Montana you are, Arlee must be closer than Ohio! ;-)

I got most of mine from Hurst Hardwoods. They are in Florida but they do ship and I believe they also drop ship from the mills across the country. Their prices are excellent!! They are not so great on internet response though so if you want to talk to them, call them.

We will be going with quartersawn white oak flooring and will be ordering from Internet Lumber Company when we're ready as they had the best prices I can find and are very helpful over the phone. I checked locally just in case they could come close (would love to have thrown the business locally), but when he went to look up pricing, he pulled up Internet Lumber Company! When I told him what their pricing was per foot for our selection, he said there was not way they could come close.

I'm getting some rift cut select white oak locally. I'm in Ohio and there's a bunch of mills around here. I got my recommendation from somebody online, but I also googled because I need some special pieces that this mill doesn't make.

I'm sure I didn't get the best price, but I love my quarter and rift sawn white oak floor. I just love the figuring in it. I ordered a random width floor from Carlisle in long lengths - 4-7" wide and lengths mainly in the 10-12' range. This was $8.50/sq. ft. It would have been cheaper if I'd wanted shorter lengths or narrower planks but I really wanted a certain look for the floors.

I really love the way they came out and have no regrets.
