Pet Pictures

On the How Many Pets Do You Own thread, I was asked about my tundras, and to share pictures. So I figured we could all share pictures of our pets! It's been awhile since we did this.

Here's the educational part ... the American Tundra Shepherd is a breed that was created by the US Army in the late 60s, for use in the VietNam war. Veterinarians crossed an Alaskan Tundra Wolf with a German Shepherd to get a "bigger, badder dog" that would excel in tracking, protection, search & rescue, etc. The problem with the original dog, was that 50% wolf gave them too much of a "retreat" mindset, and they didn't take orders well. Eventually the Army abandoned the project, but the vet who had spearheaded the work retired to Edwardsville, KS (suburb of Kansas City) where he continued his research and careful breeding, eventually achieving the official American Tundra Shepherd who is maybe 3 - 5% wolf. That small percentage gives them their size, and a more pronounced "pack mentality" than regular dogs. They don't mature until about 3 years old, and potential owners are carefully screened for the right mentality to understand what all can be accomplished by a 140-lb puppy. Woofman ate a doorframe, taught himself how to open doors by turning the doorknob with his paws, shredded more pillows than you can count, and ate through a chain link fence when his one-true-love (Mysti) was in seclusion because she was in season but we didn't want a breeding at that time ... I could tell stories and show pictures that would curl your hair! LOL! But we are very strange evidently because we love them all.

We have about two acres, fenced, so there's plenty of room for running and doing doggie things ... we've got two extra-large doggie doors which the tundras duck to go through and three small ones for the yorkies.

Here's Woofman Jack and Mystical Princess. We lost Woofman the end of October, he was the most fantastic dog I've ever known. At 163 lbs., he was the largest tundra we've met. Mysti is about 90 lbs in this picture.

We kept two puppies from their breeding ... here's Tallulah Belle and JacksonBlu at 3 months ... and roughly 50 lbs.

They liked to sleep in the bathtub at night. Blu still does ...

Tallulah goes for the sofa ...

Sunday mornings are "cuddle time" in the big bed ... I'm there in the corner, hiding behind a newspaper. Tallulah and Blu were just over a year old.

Woofman and Scrappy ....

So, that's my big dogs ... I'll try to post the yorkies a bit later.

In the meantime, share some pix of your furbabies too!
