Wireless internet card ?

Have any of you used a wireless internet card through your cell phone company? I have been doing some research so I can get one for my laptop, but I haven't really found all the info I would like to have. Didn't Flamey get a card?

I have a new wireless laptop but I have no idea what's in it! My GDs both have wireless laptops and they spoiled me. It's so nice. It tells you when it's time to go plug it in so it can charge. Pure luxury!

Vannie, I am talking about a card that you purchase and plug into your laptop. Then you have to sign up with a plan from a cell phone company for the service and pay a monthly fee. That way you can get on the internet no matter where you are as long as the cell phone company has service in that area.

Hi Mikie, I sure hope you or someone else knowledgable is around. I'm at my daughter's house. I entered the address (numbers from above) in the address bar on the PC and went through the set up and then re-booted the PC and re-brought up the browser. On the laptop, when I click on the wirless connections icon on the tool bar it shoulw the network is available. It also shows some others. It says the network requires a network key (WEP) and I entered the same one as I'd entered on the PC, and click connect and the box disappears. But when I bring up internet explorer, it says no connection. No matter what I do, and I've tried a bunch of things, I still get no connection on the browser on the PC. Please Help!! Thanks, Alice

Thanks for the info. I'm still not real clear what I have and what I need, however. I looked up my device manager in my new computer and found Marvell Yukon 88E8039 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller. Is this the ethernet connection on the back of the computer or something else? If I do not have WIFI capability and it would take returning my computer to the geek squad to have a card installed, would USB adapter not work instead? Is it your opinion that this is not reliable or exceptable? The laptop is WIFI ready so it is not a problem for that computer. Is there anything else other than the router that I would need for the laptop? On a related note, would it make more sense for me to hard wire all of the stationary computers(hence running ethernet wires all over) and just setting the laptop up for wireless? I appreciate the time you have taken to educate me! Its been a while since I have taken time to read up on technology and now I'm in a time crunch.

It does not seem to be a network adapter issue either, as both wireless and direct connection are problematic. The next step to see if a program typically Anti Virus is causing issue. So lets boot the computer to safe mode with Networking and see if you can connect that way, lets just concentrate using a direct connection. Restart the computer, keep tapping the F8 Key, the computer will boot to the advanced boot options menu black screen with white letter. From the list presented to you, use the arrow key to select Safe Mode With Networking once selected hit enter on the keyboard. Now try to connect to only Google.com. Let us know if you can connect that way. Do not surf the internet in this mode. Please be sure to try another browser too maybe before doing all this above in case this is a silly internet explorer issue.. Joe

Your looking for a signal booster (wifi) for the router in the basement so it sends a stronger single throughout the house there are a few different things you can get, one is an antenna that connects to the router in the basement, then there is a thing called a repeater. I think others will have more information as I do not use the items. I like to deal with (New Egg) you can Google that, when buying items like this. Some people hang the router on a wall and say that helps, that would be the router in your basement, the thing with the antennas on it. So to start your search - Google "Wireless Single Booster" to get an idea of what is out there, and wait for others to reply

MaryAnn, I could have gotten the card to plug into my tower or done it thru my cell phone. I opted for the cell phone, because in order for it to be cost-effective, I needed to give up the land lines and go cellular, so since I was going to have to get the cell phones, anyway, I got one that was Alltel Axcess compatible. And it doesn't count against any of my cell minutes, either.

What company are you considering? I think Cingular offers it, too.

Hi Flamey. I use Sprint for my cell phone and they ofter two card plans. One is $39 for 40 MB and the other is $60 for unlimited. I was hoping to get something cheaper because I want to keep my internet service at home like it is. I was wondering if the cell companies like Pocket or Cricket offer the card plans. I need to check out their websites.
I would love to get rid of my land line because we use our cell phones for most calls, but I have to fax Jammer's time sheet in every day and I need the land line to fax. Or is there another way to fax???

nextel/sprint is THE best for coverage in my experience. from 2006-late 2007 i used their aircard in my laptop while on jobsites all day w/o ever once having coverage issues not to mention i sent massive files. my co-workers got stuck w/ verizons' card and emailed me their design files to forward to their clients because verizon was toooo slow. nextel/sprint used to have cheap plan that linked into your regular cell minutes back in 2005-06 but now they don't do that. i think their cheapest plan is $60 which is not bad, i'm not sure of the allowed minutes thou. ~ liz
