snow lots of snow!

We were only supposed to get maybe an inch last night. DH got up for work this morning, left, turned around and came back home! He drives a Ranger pickup truck. The undercarriage dragged in the snow when he left. The plows hadn't been out because we weren't supposed to get much. He is still clearing driveways. When he went out, I looked at the driveway. AT LEAST TEN INCHES, PROBABLY MORE!!!!!! He called his boss, boss said it was all lake effect (where the snow comes across the open waters of the Lake Erie and picks up the extra moisture from the lake, we get dumped on). He called his partner who lives about 45 miles south, he got a dusting!

My MOm in Buffalo got nothing! I'm in Long island and we got about four inches. I know, because I shovelled out our driveway!

Isn't that lake effect snow fun? When we lived in Willoughby On The Lake (about 20 miles east of Cleveland) winter mornings gave lots of surprises. At just 2 blocks from the lake we could get 2 feet or nothing depending on how much wind lift accompanied the snow bands. We could leave home where there was just a coating, but a mile south it would be a whole different world with the snow measured in feet and vice versa.

Love that card, Janice! I went to college with someone who grew up in Florida-he had never seen snow. Too funny. I grew up in Pennsylvania, so we had plenty. I still love it. Hoping for a snow day from school tomorrow and maybe Tuesday as well! DS is driving back to our area today. He was in Denver to visit his best friend and couldn't fly back since the air port is closed. He's in Ohio now. He can't wait to get home to see the snow. He stopped for a snow shovel up there somewhere-his girlfriend is snowed in. She can't even open the storm door. We aren't often this lucky. DH is shoveling a path to the street even though I contracted with someone to clear our drive and sidewalks this year. I doubt he was expected such a large snowfall. Wonder if he will get here. No worries if not, I am snug and cozy inside.

First, regarding surviving winter, up there in Michigan, most vegetables don't. About the only ones are parsnips, shallots, garlic, horseradish. Some herbs are perennial, like sage. Some self-sow (which makes them seem perennial!) like peppermint. As for pole beans, putting them against 3.5' fence will cause them to spread out sideways once the vines reach the top of the fence. Most pole varieties can easily reach 10' and more (i.e., Kentucky Wonder, Blue Lake, Rattlesnake). You can try Burpee's Golden Pole Bean, it's about the only variety I can think of which doesn't try to climb as high as most others. (Burpee themselves discontinued this variety a decade or two ago, but you can still find it from the occasional supplier of heirloom beans.) You can also try a half-runner bean; they won't really climb, but if your dog is small enough they may form a sufficient barrier. If you want to consider things in the flower department, there are all sorts of ways to cover a fence, ranging from roses to climbing nasturtiums.

the nearest report says 6.0 inches, but I think we got a little more. My potted pindo is covered with tons of snow, I actually still have flowers on my autumn blooming camellia named yudetide (means something like christmas in chinese because they bloom until christmas). Very high winds here too. Should probably get to 10 inches before its all over, and the plows went through once about 2 hrs ago and now you would never of known. And the snow without a doubt does some insulating. Its about 22F here right now, but a cosy 52F in my pindo palm shelter, a full 30 degrees warmer than outside. Without the snow it was only 25 warmer than outside. Good luck and enjoy the snow (it might be troublesome, but not too many people can enjoy palm trees and snow, plus I think its amazing how in 24 hours a street can be completely unrecognizable).

Spent Friday night with my two SILs, dinner (on them) at a nice Italian restaurant. We exchanged gifts. Saturday I put up our little (table-top) pre-lighted Christmas tree. I had a minor accident getting it down from the attic. The metal tree base fell and knocked me on the cheek, under my eye. So I sat with ice on it for a half hour. I recovered enough to finish assembling and decorating the tree. Made hero sandwiches for dinner for me and hubby. We got some snow (Long Island NY)- maybe 4 inches. . I shovelled twice so not much accumulated this morning (Sunday). Today I'll finish my Christmas cards and do some gift-wrapping. Not a lot of work left for me. I do enjoy December but I must pace myself, not do too much. This year I am NOT baking cookies. Too much work and I don't need to eat so much sweets and desserts.

I agree with Connie...weather man was wayyyy off! I still would take a beautiful snow here.....course we got our ice storm and then about 4 inches of sleet on top of that so that will probably be it for us this year......every year now just ice....no beautiful snow....Stacy

Hey Tammi...I work right on the lake...took double to get into work (45 min) yeah, mark johnson channel 5 said we were only getting at most an inch! tell that to the 3 foot drift by my side door, at least it was the fluffy stuff...and it's still snowing - a big "cloud" over Cuyahoga county! the open part of the lake is over by Sandusky it's frozen solid out the "back door" here at work!

We've had 20 inches this past week for a total of 233 inches this season - mostly lake effect snow only Lake Superior instead of Erie.

Goose53, I'm in Lorain Cty. We don't get much lake effect where we are, usually, it usually goes a bit farther east of us. Last night, radar showed the snow coming straight south. They are saying another 6-10" tonight. I don't know what our total is for the year. I haven't paid any attention. There was 8.5 inches in the driveway last week when we got it. There is probably close to 2 feet in the yard. Stacy and Glenda, come on up! I'll let you play in the snow, then let you put your wet clothes in my dryer so you can go back out and play again. There's some wild rice soup left over from supper to help warm you up.

gazania, we lived in Wickliffe, about a mile from Lake Erie, for 11 yrs. It was brutal. I am SO happy to be living in the deep South, now. Talked to my Bro today (near Wooster) and he said it was 4 degrees & the 200 yd. driveway was iced over. We had a cold front come through overnight, the high was only 60 today. It's gonna be in the 70's this weekend. I could NEVER move back to the cold, white North. Bless you all up there, suffering b/c you are where you need to be. . . . (my retired Bro is housebound . . .)

We are in a serious drought here and would take moisture in ANY form. I'll bet it was beautiful!

It is beautiful. I'll have to try to get some pics taken. I am supposed to be cleaning house! In laws are coming this weekend. It's supposed to warm up 30's & 40's for the next week with cold nights. I DON'T want it to melt quickly. Way too much water for the septic to handle. Not because it needs cleaned, but because if it melts too fast, the water fills the tank because it's too much for the ground to absorb. Then the house stinks. So I am saying prayers for a slow melt! We ended up not getting any more snow last night, thankfully. There was a foot at least in the driveway when DH cleared it.
