I've never grown in zone 5 - so can't help you there, but thinking that columbines are easy from seed and usually an "early" flower. Foxy foxglove - though short - is usually reliable first year from seed. MarthaStewart.com has a Gardening tab that has Browse Plants and under that you can choose to browse plants by bloom time (you may want to browse spring and summer). I'd definately check before you count on her list (they have a dahlia as spring - unless it's greenhouse grown wouldn't even be blooming for me in zone 9 in spring ..). List a tad tedious as lists different varieties - say of tulips in spring - but an easy enough browse. Keep a notepad and pen in the car and make notes this year of things you see in others gardens/parks in bloom in June that you like. Another GREAT resource is a book Container Gardening by Paul Williams - browse it at a borders or barnes. If you're into Netflix get Rebecca's gardening Container Gardening volume - really fantastic ideas from different places (denver botanic garden, this grower/designer/that one..). You may want to plan more textures/colors from leaves and such than flowers to have good looking containers no matter what. (see next comment). Consider using a lot of "house plants" in your containers as you can grow them larger indoors over the winter and June should be fine - coleus is one I wouldn't winter sow for the event (unless you're doing it now) - take cuttings to grow inside over the winter of 2008/2009. Easy plants like "wandering jew" can give you good greens for arrangements - you could give them a big cutback 6 weeks before - stick stems in water (they'll root - that easy) them trim the rooted water cuttings for table arrangements. Also for arrangements - think greens. Note what trees have leafed out that you can insert small branches of, which shrubs - which are variegated or have different colors. There's a variegated leaf weigela that should be "in leaf" if not bloom at that time that would be lovely. Go through a "what's the worst that could happen" exercise (this will help you approach the day more calmly - you DO want to enjoy it - as you'll have reconciled yourself to the thought that things may not go perfectly). Say Rain that day - then you have tents if needed. Crushing rain within the week prior - then you have torn up flowers of the ones that were in bloom - so plan that you can trim and - worst case - spread lots of bark mulch for a very neat look (know where's the best place for mulch ahead of time). Totally different winter next year than this - say it's much warmer earlier or very late cold snaps - all your timing's off. You've already figured out the best places you can pick up flats of annuals and bark mulch. And so forth. Have some $$ in the budget for last minute fixes. Trim all flowering buds off your plants through mid-late May (say roses I'd go to about 5 weeks before the date) - push the plant to bloom when you want where it's possible. Fertilize roses around 2nd/3RD week of May. Every now and again remind yourself you're not superwoman. Coordinating the reception will be huge - the garden only a piece of it. And, you want to have enough energy left to enjoy the day itself. Don't plan on too much last detail stuff for the garden (you mention this is your oldest daughter - siblings and friends of siblings who'd be cheap labor you can train this year on how to spread mulch? plant a flat of annuals? You WILL be busy! Keep us informed and in the loop as you go through your planning this summer (we all love this kind of post - it's so much fun!)

Annie, come on over to the Wintersowing forum, you'll find tons of tips from "all us oldies, that have been WS for years now. One of the key important things is to have good soil in those containers. Don't use cheap soil. things like hyponex, or top soil. You end up with some lovely "soil bricks" but no germination. Don't use seed starting mix or anything like garden soil from your own yard or miracle grow garden soil. Seeds won't germinate in them. Don't use any commercial potting mix that has the soil retention pellets in them either. It will soak up soil like a sponge and rot your seeds. I'm one that uses miracle grow potting mix for all my containers and can vouch for the bad soil as well. My first 50 containers, 7 years ago, turned to bricks and not a seed germinated. The remaining 900 containers where done with miracle grow potting mix and everyone germinated. Since then I have had near 100% see germination every year. The real problem is dealing with whatever mother nature wants to throw at us, and being New Englanders, we all know she will throw everything at us and there is no way around it. Since starting to WS 7 years ago, there is barely a plant I have purchased, as I really have no need for them. There is always way more seedlings to plant than I have room for and never fear that if I don't' like something, I will pull it out and give it away. There is always something else to plant in it's place. Marlene, you are going to freeze your gizzards off doing you WS outside in the cold. Terrene is correct too. You will have frozen soil, if it is left outside, and you have to have access to running water to get the soil wet before planting the seeds and putting them out. My kitchen is my WS room. My back door is right there, and as I get the containers done, out the back door they go, out to the backyard inside a chain link fenced area. All containers go directly on the ground and then "mother nature" does her thing, and believe me she has done some real surprises. Yet those WS seedlings are pretty, pretty hardy. I've had them survive floating in 12 inches of rain as the ducks swam beside and around them, attacks of various critters, and they just sprout new stems and branch out before I get a chance to prune any of them. Just as long as we don't get a repeat of last years summer, here are some pics of what you can get from WS. just had bucca di beppo picked up, we started w/ a chopped anti-pasto salad & i had gnocchi w/ fresh mozzarella, DH had a huge meatball. we skipped on their yummy tiramisu, we are trying to get in shape. i'll probably make a roasted banana cake bars w/ brown butter frosting from cookinglight, it's low-fat and very very yummy ~ liz

Suebdoo, what time do I need to be there? Yum! One of my all time favorite meals, and only seems good when cooked at home. One of these days I will get it right. I am just now coming off of a slumber party with 3, 6 year old girls last nite, so....grandma is puttering out.... Thank goodness my DD came to the rescue for a few hours this afternoon and took DGD to a BD party, so I had some time to clean up and recover.....whew! I think a tottie is in order, and then probably around dark time may think about some leftovers. Anything easy, and sugarless! LOL Trin

I don't know yet, but I have to share with you last nights dinner. I had some left over chili from the night before, so I made hotdogs and chili. You would have thought I had made a feast for Jammer! He kept talking about how wonderful it was. Guess I need to make hotdogs more often, LOL.

Grilled chicken, potatoes wrapped in foil and carrots wrapped in foil with butter and fresh dill. We love to cook on the grill.

Lasagna, the sauce is simmering as I type, green salad and maybe a baguette with garlic butter. I don't often serve two main starches in the same meal but it just sounds good today!

We have Ricky and Seth tonight and they want pizza. We're going to make sundaes after pizza...that's always a nice fun mess! LOL...they love to make their own with tons of toppings!

DH just asked the same question! My answer,the usual one,was "I have no idea"! I have nothing thawed out,as usual.LOL I have a couple of small round roasts in the freezer that I bought on sale in NM.Think I may put them in a sink full of cold water and thaw them,then cut off some steaks,beat the heck out of them and make chicken fried steak.Today is DH's birthday and he is feeling a little down because only one of the kids has called him to wish him happy Birthday so far.Chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes are his favorite meal and I haven't made them in a long time,so I think that's the menu! May be 8 o'clock before we eat but I guess that's OK too.
By the way,why is it men get so bent out of shape when "everyone" doesn't wish them a happy birthday? I have to remind HIM when it's mine then it doesn't mean anything that he says it.LOL

Meeting our best friends at our local "grease pit" for supper. We live out in the country and this little diner like restaurant is at the end of our road and they have the best food. I am going for the fried gizzards!!! I love them! Don't know what hubby will have.

White chicken chili is what ended up on my dinner table tonight. I had also cooked a pot of soup, and made cracker dressing today......all the leftovers are in the fridge, ready to heat 'n eat the next few days.

Hi KayJones!

It's Corams on the corner of 231 and 2301 going toward Fountain. I live off of 2301 out here in Bayou George. The Corams out here have the best fried gizzards on Saturdays. Thursday's is fried shrimp suppers and Friday's are fried shrimp and a rib eye steak...all of it is good!

Had a change of plans!LOL Thawed out chicken and beef fajita meat that I had in the freezer.We got it in NM too,already seasoned with red and green bell peppers and purple onions from the meat market.Delicious! I had frozen it flat in zip lock bags and it was easier to thaw than the round roast would have been.I added frozen California veggie mix to the chicken for me and had it without the tortilla.MMMMMM good! Guess I'll do the chicken fries for dinner tomorrow.
