March 09 - What have you fed your compost pile today?
Q
Comments (56)
This past weekend was all about using the compost, not adding to it. Last year's batch has now been spread on the new garden. Of course, this means that there's space in the bins again (living in the city, I use garbage can composters), so it will soon be time to refill them again. The new plan includes: shaken-out sod removed from the new garden bed, Winter kitchen scraps that have been stockpiled outdoors in lidded buckets, a bag full of random yard waste from a very late-season yard cleanup, some old leaves from a friend (we don't really get leaves in our fenced city yard), and possibly some rabbit and/or chicken manure, since I recently found sources for both. I'm hoping that for once, I'll have enough one-time additions to actually produce some significant heat. Anything's possible, right? :-)

What have you canned in '09?

Yippee! Spotted my first half ripe cherry tomato on one of my 38 plants today. Hopefully, I too, will be in the same boat as you all... By the way, a friend told me a great trick for getting rid of fruit flies...quickly...Put a quarter inch of red cider vinegar in the bottom of a quart sized canning jar (hopefully you have one or two left after all your canning). Anyway, you then get a piece of 81/2 x 11 paper (preferably scrap so you're not wasting a clean piece on the @#$%ing things. Twist the paper into a cone shape where there's a pretty small hole at the point end (small enough for the flies to go only one way...in) and tape it into that cone shape. Stick the cone small end down into the quart jar until the paper fits snug inside the jar. The flies are attracted to the vinegar, go down the funnel and are too stupid to figure out how to get back out. Works REALLY well! It's also really cool watching the stupid things trying to get out. I rid my kitchen of ALL the fruit flies in two days that came home with the farmer's market peaches. I have also placed it right next to my compost on the kitchen counter and I no longer have ANY fruit flies around my compost bin when I open it up to put food scraps in.

I don't know yet, but I have to share with you last nights dinner. I had some left over chili from the night before, so I made hotdogs and chili. You would have thought I had made a feast for Jammer! He kept talking about how wonderful it was. Guess I need to make hotdogs more often, LOL.

Grilled chicken, potatoes wrapped in foil and carrots wrapped in foil with butter and fresh dill. We love to cook on the grill.

Lasagna, the sauce is simmering as I type, green salad and maybe a baguette with garlic butter. I don't often serve two main starches in the same meal but it just sounds good today!

DH just asked the same question! My answer, the usual one,was "I have no idea"! I have nothing thawed out,as usual.LOL I have a couple of small round roasts in the freezer that I bought on sale in NM.Think I may put them in a sink full of cold water and thaw them, then cut off some steaks, beat the heck out of them and make chicken fried steak.Today is DH's birthday and he is feeling a little down because only one of the kids has called him to wish him happy Birthday so far.Chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes are his favorite meal and I haven't made them in a long time,so I think that's the menu! May be 8 o'clock before we eat but I guess that's OK too.
By the way,why is it men get so bent out of shape when "everyone" doesn't wish them a happy birthday? I have to remind HIM when it's mine then it doesn't mean anything that he says it.LOL

Meeting our best friends at our local "grease pit" for supper. We live out in the country and this little diner like restaurant is at the end of our road and they have the best food. I am going for the fried gizzards!!! I love them! Don't know what hubby will have.

White chicken chili is what ended up on my dinner table tonight. I had also cooked a pot of soup, and made cracker dressing today......all the leftovers are in the fridge, ready to heat 'n eat the next few days.

Hi KayJones!

It's Corams on the corner of 231 and 2301 going toward Fountain. I live off of 2301 out here in Bayou George. The Corams out here have the best fried gizzards on Saturdays. Thursday's is fried shrimp suppers and Friday's are fried shrimp and a rib eye steak...all of it is good!

I had an email I sent to you bounce back to me!

Had a change of plans!LOL Thawed out chicken and beef fajita meat that I had in the freezer. We got it in NM too, already seasoned with red and green bell peppers and purple onions from the meat market.Delicious! I had frozen it flat in zip lock bags and it was easier to thaw than the round roast would have been.I added frozen California veggie mix to the chicken for me and had it without the tortilla.MMMMMM good! Guess I'll do the chicken fries for dinner tomorrow.
