Carolyn, If the TV is more-or-less centered, then a single support under the center should be OK in conjunction with 1"-thick shelves. If the arrangement you want for your cubicles has more than one support, then you should be pretty much home free with any reasonable arrangement. For a 24"-deep shelf, you're pretty much forced to go with sheet goods. (I once lived in a house built in the 1920's that had 24"-deep shelves made from solid redwood, but I don't think you can get that anymore ;).) I believe that "Applyply" plywood can be had in 1" thickness, although it's probably a special order. Baltic Birch plywood may also be available in 1", although I think it normally comes in 5'x5' sheets, so 72" may not be possible with BB. You possibly could laminate two pieces of 1/2" plywood to get to 1". If the TV is really 300+ lbs, you might want to go even a bit thicker than 1". Consult Sagulator to see what your specific weight, shelf material, and unsupported distance will do for you. Applyply is made in thicknesses up to 1-1/4", so there should be something there that will take care of you.

Great thread! Aloha, why not consider lift-up, tambor or other garage-style doors at counter level? We don't want it all the way around the room, but we're thinking of doing the same thing in two corners: 30"-deep bases, 15"-deep uppers from counter to ceiling but with the first 18" (vertical) of uppers having lift-up doors to hide appliances, canisters, etc.. (We want more than the standard 12" between counter and upper to accommodate taller items.) To fori and writersblock's concerns: The lift-ups won't have the swing-out issues of regular doors (nor the same issues of shallow drawers between base and uppers, which I often see in "inspiration" magazines, but don't understand for the same reasons fori and weritersblock mention). When the lift-up is closed, 15" of counter in front. Open, it's 30" deep of counter space!

Akimbo, those 8" cabinets are awesome! I am currently looking into installing an IKEA tall cabinet into my hallway linen closet to make it look like a built-in. We did a custom wardrobe in our old house with IKEA cabinets that turned out great. I love that IKEA's cabinets are so easy to modify (even though they have done everything to discourage it). The 2nd and third photos are the Kitchen we were working on when I asked you about the upper cabinet depth/microwave issue. We ended up using a spacer behind the microwave.

I found the Everything I Wanted to Know About Drawers thread so helpful when I was in the beginning phase of my planning. One of the big lessons for me is that standard cabinets (lowers) are 30" tall; so when you consider drawers and sizes in one cabinet, the drawer heights add up to 30. For your skinny drawer plus (2) 12", that top drawer will be a 6" drawer. But you won't actually have 6" of drawer height! As fishcow mentioned, best if you head to the showroom with a tape measure to see how much room you'll have. Also, Buehl's What to Store Where thread is indispensable. You'll really need to first take an inventory of what's in your kitchen in order to determine if your drawers provide enough space. Good luck!
