Comments (31)par72, be sure to read closely. The material that works to treat fungus is ordinary corn meal, not corn gluten meal. You can find corn meal at the grocery store if nothing else. Don't get the flour that is used to make tortillas. It is usually adulterated with baking powder or other shortcut materials for baking. You want pure ground corn. Molasses can be used to improve the soil in many ways. It has been recommended against root knot nematodes in Florida and Texas. Otherwise a general organic program helps to control bugs by not killing or chasing away the predators. When you stop using chemicals, you see a return of toads, birds, lizards, and other critters who help keep your garden free of bugs. Of course if you have cats then all bets are off....See MoreQuestion Re: Tile cutting/sizing 12x12 down to 12x6
Comments (17)Thank you so very much Mongo, you do a superb job of explaining things. I remember you telling me on a previous post about a small wet saw, thanks for reminding me. My husband doesn't have enough hair for spray so I think I'll use some cheapy brand; it is a wonderful tip. I can do this, I pulled it off on my kitchen backsplash with even less information and the herringbone ran on the diagonal. Those tiles were pre cut and I am thankful that they were, because I didn't have a clue to the problems that could have developed if they weren't. They were apparently cut to your equation because they matched perfectly. Crazy spacing, I like the grid tech for the floor:) I remember taping my 45* drafting square to the sides of these sections for drying overnight. One night I stayed up all night to tile. It was fun though. This was my first wall, I got better on the second wall as seen in the 2nd pic: I just picked a center spot over the stove location and started - it wasn't exactly centered though, The grout was still wet at this point: You've just boosted my confidence, and others if they are following this post. Thank you so much again Mongo, for your help on this project, and on all the other projects that us lost souls post on GW....See MoreAre 12' deep cabinets with inset doors deep enough?
Comments (9)We have inset cabinets and my dinner plates didn't fit in my uppers...sigh. Inexperienced cabinet maker...they were all custom! :( The outside of my uppers measure 12 1/4'' from the wall. The inside dimension is only 10 1/2'' exactly. Most dinner plates are 11''. If I had overlay doors, I'd have an extra 3/4'' of space. That is the thickness of my doors that are inset into the frame. The only other thing I can think of that didn't fit in my uppers that I used to keep in there were a few larger bowls (like salad bowls). I keep those in my dining buffet now along with all of my china. I bought new every day dishes that have a 10 1/2'' dinner plate (although in reality they are just a tad smaller) and so they fit perfectly in the uppers. I'm with Marthavila, that 13 1/2'' would be a minimum for plates to fit. If were doing it again, I'd probably go with 14''. Hope this help...I'd change your order! Good luck! :)...See MoreHusband ordered 15 inch deep upper Ikea cabinets-- too deep??
Comments (20)We have 15" deep uppers on one side of our Kitchen with standard depth base cabinets (24"D) and counters (~25.5"D) - we have no issues and I don't notice them when I'm working in front of them - and we're a tall family (I'm 5'10" - the shortest!) We have 12" deep uppers on the other side of the Kitchen and I wish we had gone with 15" deep on that side as well! I work primarily on the side with the 15" deep uppers (our Prep & Cooking Zones). Regarding the depth - it should be 18" from the bottom of the light rail to the finished counter so standard small appliances will fit under the upper cabinets. Most countertop small appliances (mixers, coffeemakers, etc.) are designed to fit with an 18" backsplash. If you want to go higher, consider whether you can reach the cabinets (as was mentioned earlier). I probably wouldn't go much higher if you plan to sell in a short time. Lily'sMom - IKEA uses a rail system for mounting cabinets....See Moreschroeem
