Furniture placement

I'm working on furniture for our new home under construction. The family room/great room is 19X24. The walls are as follows:

1. 24' wall almost entirely with windows

2. 19' wall center is a large fireplace with built ins

on each side

3. 24' opposite windows is a walkway/hallway

4. opposite of fireplace wall is open to the kitchen area

The 24X19 area will be carpet and all usable for furniture, actually minus 3 feet for the fireplace and built-ins. So the "carpet area" is more like 19X21. My original idea was to have a couch in front of the windows, back to the widows, with 3 ft or so between the couch and windows. I was going to place another couch across from it and have a coffee table in the center. Then two chairs would be placed with there backs towards the kitchen. They would be angled towards each other a little with an ottoman in between and a small table between the chairs.

We will soon have 7 in our immediate family and have lots of friends/family over. We want to seat as many as possible. We want the furniture to be comfy and not too formal.

We have had a leather sofa for the past 5 years and love it. I had decided against that this time, but have since revisited the idea. Only thing is I'm not sure if 2 leather sofas are "too much." Perhaps that sounds crazy, I'm just not sure about that look. If we go leather should we do 1 leather sofa by the windows and then 2 comfy chairs away from the kitchen and then just have 2 accent chairs in place of where we would have had another sofa? Hope that makes sense.

A concern is with the two sofas will that close the room off too much from the walkways, etc? Going with the 2 accent chairs as I see it has the disadvantage of minus 1-2 seats and perhaps loosing some comfort.

I would appreciate any help and suggestions you could offer. I have played with some furniture placement on graph paper, etc just hard to visualize. Also, hard to know if I would like the 2 leather sofas. I do like mixing fabrics and consider myself taste eclectic. So, I would not see myself having things matchy match anyways. I do however visualize if going with two sofas, they would be the same.

Congrats on #7. My friend has a similiar layout. She has 2 upholstered couches and 2 leather chairs in her room along with a table between the chairs and a coffee table and maybe one more on the other side of one of the couches.

The way she did it was to place the chairs sort of in a 'v' with the table in the corner between the built-in's and in what would be your hallway area. Then one couch backs to the kitchen and one backs to the windows.

However, this sort of renders one of the chairs less useful for TV watching if it is in the built-in area (hers is).

This friend is a decorator for what that is worth!!

Two leather chairs is an idea too...ummm...wonder what dh would think of that. I'm going to try to get to a few furniture stores this week for some inspiration. Thank you!

DRAW the entire room to scale at 1/4 inch to one inch. Add the windows, openings et. Put inches to all of everything. : ) You don't need a "program". A 25 foot tape measure, graph paper and a pencil and a friend..........works just fine. Get busy or no help of a worthwhile nature will be forthcoming.

Here's my 2 cents, as a designer with about 20 years experience. Furnishing a room begins with a PLAN. You start your plan by determining what you want to do in the room, which informs everything else. Is it a place for entertaining, eating, TV watching, study, sleeping, playing an instrument? Once you have the function pinpointed, you draw the room to scale, noting positions of every door, window, heating elements, electrical outlets, fireplaces, and anything else of a permanent nature that would affect furniture placement. You look for focal points, natural lighting and views to the outside and to other rooms. The next step is to determine the furniture layout, including upholstery, case goods, floor and wall coverings, and lighting fixtures, keeping in mind scale and proportion as you figure out sizes of furniture, clearances, walkways, sight lines, etc. Only after you have this "road map" for your room will you begin to look at styles, colors, patterns of textiles, window coverings, and furnishings. You take your road map on all shopping trips, as any furniture salesperson will ask "what size (rug, sofa, table, etc.) are you looking for?" If you don't have the answer at the ready, you will waste a lot of time. And the last item you choose before the "frills" is the paint color on the walls. It's easier to match a paint color to your palette than the other way around. The "frills" are the decorative accessories like ceramics, paintings, sculpture, photos, vases, etc. Keep in mind that a room is never totally "done." It will change as your needs change, and should be flexible. Good luck with your project!

Super cool room!! I think you need to rework the corner where the tv is - do you have a dry sink that is a bit bigger and taller than the table you are currently using for the tv? Put the tv where the tall cabinet is, and then fiddle with chair placement. The one chair will end up being the hot seat when the wood stove is burning, it needs to be farther away. Your idea of less bulky chairs is a good one. It’s a great room, and having a cozy area by the fire is a good one.

I think it is better this way but I’ll still get a new rug, drapes and a larger sofa console table as well as fix the artwork. Maybe a floating shelf under the blue floral art piece instead of having the small console table competing with the soon-to-be large console behind the sofa?1
