I mail care packages to Meredith regularly. Favourites that travel well are moist treats, carrot cake, brownies, banana bread, fudge etc. Sol's chocolate chip cookies and Ann's Oatmeal cookies also travel well. My homemade pickles, jams and tomato sauces are also a huge hit.

Each care package also contains the necessities of life, toothpaste , shampoo, tampons, etc and always socks! Socks in the care package are a special thing between she and I.

Truthfully , the fact that Mom made it and sent it seems much more important than what it is.

Boo Hoo she goes back to Halifax on Wednesday!

I've sent various cookies, including biscotti. My favorite way to package cookies is to pack them in the empty Pringle's potato chip packages, just stack them in and they don't get broken.

Nearly any quick bread travels pretty well, as do ginger snaps, and mini muffins. I don't know about that frosted cake,though...

Annie when I mail carrot cake to Meredith I put the cream cheese icing in a tupperware type container (from the dollar store 'cause it ain't ever coming back!). The thought was Meredith could just frost the cake herself except she tells me they just cut the cake and then spoon the icing on their individual pieces! LOL.

What a mean mom I was! Mever mailed a gift of food to college during the time either kid was there! But I sure did mail a bill now and then and say go get a pizza.

Gonna watch this one!!
Amy moved into the dorm yesterday....sniff sniff.

I am going back up there on Sunday to drop off my car for her (Frank is off next week so we won't need both cars) and I plan to just take both girls out shopping and let them get whatever suits them.
They each signed up for the 15 meal plan and let me tell you....the food there is great!! Lots of dining choices-kinda like a food court. So i imagine they will want goodies to grab quick for breakfast.
They have n apt size fridge with a freezer and a hot pot in the room. There is a toaster oven, microwave, coffee pot in the common area.
Amy rarely eats breakfast here at home so it'll be interesting to see what she wants. Keep in mind she kept her part time job at the supermarket (she just transferred to a store closer to school) so shopping for things will be easy for her.

Cheers!
Susie

Put the frosting in the MIDDLE of the cake!!
Like an Oreo!
My daughter wanted "real" food after awhile. They had several restaurants that they could buy from with their food card. It was fun at first, but it didn't take long until she wanted a "meat/potatoes/veggie" type meal without all the fat. She said everything is greasy....except a salad and that got old quick in the winter.

So........sometimes, the money to go OFF campus and get something was a good option. Take a crockpot full of homemade stew and some biscuits and go visit!

Protein is sorely lacking, so maybe send some nuts to munch on. Salty snack stuff, but still with some nutrition!

Microwave popcorn was popular too, but ya just can't beat homemade choc. chip cookies or brownies! Nothing tops that!

Rice Crispie treats travel really well (especially when you don't cut them ahead of time) as do the all time favorite, brownies! Homemade jam and a big jar of peanutbutter. Crackers are a staple along with soup. My kids always requested my homemade hot cocoa and spice tea mixes (especially nice when they had a cold/sore throat). They also took quarts of my dill pickles and picante sauce. I froze cookies stacked in convenience store plastic cups. You can get a lot of cookies in one of those suckers! I didn't mail stuff, but when they came home (seldom) I always had a pan of cinnamon rolls or small fruit pie ready haul back. They also enjoyed "shopping at Mom's" - gathering stuff from my well stocked pantry. (I tend to bargin shop and usually have multi "good buys".)

Wjen I was in college,my Godmother mailed me a "hello" card with a gollar bill and a note "Have a Coke on us." It was so sweet of her. She died before I got home to thank her. By the way, I think all of you are wonderful parents to your kids. The first year in college can be very lonely. A package from home is the greatest!

Thanks so much for all the replies. Sparked some ideas. Its gonna be a fun year! Sue

I have 2 DDs who each get a monthly goodie package while they are away at university. As they are a couple provinces away, their packages take 5-7 days by mail. I find that cookies (any variety), fudge and cereal cakes (rice krispie, puffed wheat and popcorn cakes) travel the best. I also enclose fun stuff in their packages, for example the youngest one is guaranteed to find at least 1 yellow smiley face in her package. Sometimes I will individually wrap the items with instructions to open 1/day until they are all open. It's as much fun for me as it is for them!

Fudge. Packages of individual Crystal Light (the kind that go into water bottles). Necessities of life.

My son loves to receive homemade pumpkin bread, but any quick bread will stay fresh long enough if you ship it priority. Rice Krispies Treats also ship well and stay fresh.I fill in the packages with cereal bars, microwave popcorn, individual easy mac's, hot chocolate packs, individual pretzel or chip packs. Anything individually wrapped is good because it is automatic portion control.

I have two cousins that are significantly younger than me. When they were in college, I'd send them homemade cookies and jam. I'd also send them goofy little toys (stress relievers).

Silly Putty anyone?
