Anyone have a Fisher Paykel counter-depth?

There are a couple of discussions of this from 2007, but I couldn't find anything more recent (other than that this exists!) We looked at the 30" FP counter-depth model today, and it seems like a good deal for the price ($1400, well below most of the alternatives in that size). I'm wondering how well these perform, though--I didn't even know they made standard fridges.

Also---and this may be a dealbreaker---what are the implications of fudging the recommended air clearance on the sides? This fridge is 31.1 inches, and our space is 32.5 inches (cabinets on either side---already there so can't be moved). They require one inch of clearance on each side. We meet the top and rear clearances with no trouble, but aren't quite there on the sides. Do we need to pas on this model?

Hey, just wondering about the F&K refrigerators, it doesn't seem like you can reverse the doors, how could they build with these user friendly features but not offer ability to reverse the doors.. that seems to eliminate about half the potential buyers.

Did you ever pull the trigger and get this one? If so, what do you think? I am considering the same one and only holding back because its finish is slightly darker than normal stainless and worried it may drive me nuts to have it mismatch with my range.

ccat - others have said most of what I was going to say. I have been going through the same questioning. I started out assuming I would go with standard depth because I didn't want to give up any capacity and I didn't have room to go wider. BUT then I started looking at the actual dimensions of the standard and counter depth friges. I then realized that some of the current "standard" depth friges that I was looking at were in fact quite a lot deeper than my existing (circa mid 80's) frig. So I finally decided to go with a counter depth Jenn Air. It turns out to have more capacity than my old one, though not a lot more. I agree that you should get a panel that covers the entire side of the frig, sans door. If you are going with a stainless frig the sides typically are just painted black and look terrible. You should also pull the upper cabinets over the frig out to the same depth. (Try to get a 24" deep cabinet there, which will be much more useful.)

Why Hamma? Because most Americans say they need humongous refrigerators/freezers. I hear people say they need to store the meat they killed on a hunt. They have very large parties every weekend. They cater large parties. They have many children who need many snacks all day long. Maybe they live many miles away from the nearest grocery store or supermarket. One of the posters above mentioned pizza boxes and soda/beer can boxes. (Not sure why you'd need to put a whole pizza or beverage box in the fridge.) Personally I have none of those issues. I do not like nor need a large hulking refrigerator. Counter depth is a cost-effective way to avoid the behemoth fridge look in the kitchen. Yes, they do protrude a few inches, but not as much as a conventional depth one. I have the same KA counter depth fridge (cost $2,000) as Anglophilia in my vacation rental home, and after 7 years it's still working fine, and looks great. In my primary residence we went for a 42" side by side built in Subzero, which protrudes only about 2", but is much more expensive ($9,000 retail). Fully integrated Subzeros are totally flush with the cabinets, and require expert installers.

I bought my Fisher and Paykel refrigerator in 2016 and still love it. In fact, I'm buying another one for a condo I just purchased as part of the kitchen remodel. I've had no trouble at all with it. As far as whether GE and F&P being owned by the same company make them the "same" - No, they still have separate manufacturing divisions, just as you'll find Haier appliances as part of the same company. Both F&P and GE were in financial trouble when Haier bought majority ownership to become a giant whitegoods corp. They aren't like the old Kenmore (Sears) brand that changed manufacturers all the time depending on who Sears contracted with to produce their appliances.

I looked at them, and you order the door for either the right or left.

Yes, we found the either-or door mount a frustrating "feature" as well, since we need one direction now, but may need the other if we do a full kitchen remodel....but it's worth it if it fits.

The fridge isn't exactly a bottom drawer model---there is a bottom freezer filled with drawers, but you open a door to access them. We actually liked that aspect, though, since it helps with efficiency. Generally the interior seemed pretty well-designed.....just not sure how it holds up over time.

If you can order the door on the correct way I guess it's OK, the one with the dispenser and screen I just don't see how it can be reversed on site. But Cubic feet is cubic feet right? The 17.6 cu ft seems like it is the same size than the smallest of refrigerators.

I think I could get used to the slide out trays, no things piled on top of my frozen dinners :) are they smooth like a ball bearing rail?

I really liked they use the metal in front of the glass shelves and how the shelves have many slots to adjust, unlike alot of other brands,

The display model drawers were all quite smooth, but not sure how long it had been on the floor and how much handling it had had. The other weird thing I'd forgotten about is that the lower end versions without water in the door also don't have ice makers. (They do have pull-out ice trays though.) We actually don't care that much about this since we're used to (and don't mind) ice trays and don't have a water line there anyway, but I did find that odd since I can imagine people wanting an icemaker but not necessarily the water-in-door feature.

I agree, the difference in price with or without the dispenser is fairly big. Just more things to break, and mybe leak.. ice maker takes up space in an already small fridge. I dispense water at my sink, I don't need more redundancy. The dispenser does give a more high end look.

I am just not sure, I don't mean to offend F&K owners, but I have been abroard Australia apartments many times and they are very common like our GE, I am not sure of the price premium we pay for this import brand. Their stuff does have the look I will give that. I was not impressed with the quality of their older oven offering due to flaking chrome rails, but they have now offered oven in ball bearing rails.

Also I saw you have to leave about 1.25-1.75" or so in the back, makes the unit sit at about 25.5" before the doors I think.

I also like the 2 year warranty. My $399 Kenmore made by whirlpool fridge run without problems for years and years. So has my mom's Kenmore for 15 years, I am not sure if they build appliances like they do back then, it's alot of money they are charging now also.
