I don't like what happens to a raw onion after it's been cut--they get sulfury, immediately, no matter how you store them. Some people don't mind that off smell/taste, but it bothers me greatly (I can't even stand being around DH for about 8 hours after he's piled his sandwich up with raw, been-sliced-a-while onions from the 'fixin's bar--the odor of raw, suflury onions comes right out his pores for that long).

It's rare that I don't use a whole onion, but on those rare instances, I just saute up the whole thing, take out what I don't need, put it in a regular plastic container or freezer ziplock, and pop into the freezer. Then I have onion ready to use, on a moment's notice, no cleaning necessary, even.

I have one from Publix. Also have the one for lemons, tomatoes, and green pepper. I think they work great. I think they are $2.99 at Publix by the kitchen gadgets.

I'm another who can't stand raw onions. They make me cry when I cut them, they do bad things to my digestion and I hate the smell. I will eat cooked onions mixed in foods (meatloaf,etc). DH hates garlic for the same reasons. I never use garlic of any kind.

I have one for garlic; was given to me as a gift. Not really sure if it does anything or not; it's just a plastic garlic clove-shaped thing. Just something to sit on the counter ;) (Can you tell I like clear, uncluttered countertops??)

We wrap cut onions in foil and they last and last and rarely ever go bad. Of course, we use them a lot so they probably don't get more than a week old. Same with celery and cheese. Foil is the way to go. They recommended foil to us at the cheese shop.

I have a Tupperware onion keeper but do not use it because I tend to forget it is in there and the onion will go bad. I try to buy onions that are small enough to use the entire onion in any recipe. Even if the recipe calls for 1/2 onion I use the entire onion so there is no left overs.

So far, I like my Tupperware one.

I have one, but never use it. I buy smallish onions and use the whole thing at the time - they get nasty a few days after they've been cut, so if I don't use a whole onion, I put it in a baggie and pop it in the freezer.

I just use a regular glass jar. If you put the onion's cut side down so it is flat against the bottom and then screw on the cap, the onion will keep a loooooong time. And best of all, your fridge won't get smelly.

I have 2 of the Tupperware ones and love them. No stinky fridge for me!

I have two of them and use neither. Chemocurl, I have one just like yours. It's cute, but the circumference is too big for me to comfortably secure it, so I don't like it. I used to use the other one I have because I loved the design. It was a hinged container and the lid had a built in sort of hook, which I could hook onto the underside of one of the refrigerator shelves. It was out of the way and I always knew where it was. But the new refrigerator has glass shelves, not wire and it's just as easy to use a ziplock baggie. But the truth is, we rarely have leftover onion.

The foil contains any odors, too, I forgot to mention that. And it takes up no more space than the onion itself.

I noticed it was kind of big 'around' and thought it might be hard to get unscrewed if it happened to stick at all. I guess time will tell if I use it and end up liking it.

I use a plastic bag. If I'm not going to use it in a couple days, I chop it up and freeze it.

I generally chop a whole onion no matter how much I need and store the excess in a glass container with a locking top. Like Cynic, if I don't use it within a day, I'll freeze it in a small plastic bag for future use in cooking.

OK for all of you who spent money on one. I use an empty Betty Crocker or other frosting plastic container. I just make sure I buy a small enough onion to fit in it. I can keep an onion in it for weeks in the fridge and never have a smell in the fridge from it. I will try to remember to put it cut side down though. It stays crisp too.

I love the Tupperware "Forget me not". Mine hangs on the side/front of the top shelf. I used to have a short, squat glass onion jar that worked perfectly but much easier to get lost.
