tired of folks and doctors saying 'Its Just Menopause'

Hi I just turned 48 and have been have mild symptoms of menopause for about 5yrs......but in the last 10 months they have gotten much worse......the adrenal rushes scared the crap out of me and the on and off again "lows" come more often....I have never been to so many doctors in my whole life that I have been to in the last 6 months...but they all do tests and say you are fine and its just the start of menopause...ugh....I cant take anti depression meds because they make me worse (not that I wanted to take them but my doc said they would make me feel better) which they made me want to jump at a window....there are so many symptoms involed with menopause that I just dont think people or docs understand....I was a stress free,handle all problems person til this year...now I cant watch tv without getting that sick feeling in my stomach (which isnt an ulcer)..lol..I think that I have been tested for everything...coz I just want an answer....but I guess "its just menopause"..lol...so I cant eat sweets, drink coffee or wine, eat spicy foods or get too exicted....gee..maybe I should stay in bed...I work night shift so I dont know if this makes things worse but I love the shift and dont want to change it...sorry to go on and on needed to vent...Valerie

Hi Valerie,

I want to scream when I hear of doctors prescribing anti-depression meds for menopause. WE are not depressed. WE are in menopause. It is a real and physical thing going on in our bodies. And we DESERVE to feel good, be sexual and enjoy life.

That's why I recommend women to see a female doctor that specializes is menopause and bioidentical hormones. They saved my life! There are different types of delivery: patches, gels, creams and pellets. I have the pellets because I believe they work the best after trying the others.

Testosterone pills are available, and estrogen/Testosterone combination pills are also available (Estratest). Testosterone in oral form, however, does not seem to be very effective. Testosterone cream is available, but again, is not as effective.

Timed-release testosterone pellets seem to achieve the best results, and are simple to place under the skin of the buttocks.

I am so thankful I found this site!!...It makes me feel so much better to share with you all.....I still am having problems getting up in the morning (just not wanting to get out of bed)...but feel better that Im not alone in this whole "journey".......thanks to all for being there.

Braydyray: You are a generous person with a very selfish 'friend'. I do understand people who don't want to toil forever in their yards. I am one of them. I hate pulling weeds. So I paid my neighbors grandson to spend a few hours pulling them this past week. Best $25 I've spent this summer. The point is, I PAID someone to do this. I would never let a friend come to help me out and watch them slave while I did nothing. Dinner, flowers, some token of gratitude should have been shown to you. One of my neighbors cut back a few of my bushes (she knows where to cut them back, I just hack away), for me while I was gone for a weekend. Upon my return, I saw the work she had done. I asked her to let me pay her (she does not have any money). She refused; so I bought her a gift certificate for a pedicure. She's a runner, and loves pedicures after running 5 miles a day. It was a gesture to say 'thanks for what you do for me'. Your friend places no value on what you do. This is NOT a friend, as I am sure you know by now. Wish you were my neighbor, though!

Please seek out another medical opinion. There are several medical conditions that can cause the symptoms (hot flashes) that you are having. It may be menopause. This is easily confirmed by some simple blood work. It could also be related to some other underlying condition that needs some medical attention. Please ask friends/family for a recommendation for a family doctor, one who will listen to you and to what your concerns are. If it is indeed menopause, there are treatments for the hot flashes. You need to become educated regarding what really works. They call this "evidence based medicine". In other words, treatments that have been scientifically tested and are known to work. Not just some company that is anxious to take your money. Bu finding a good, caring MD or NP who will listen to what you have to say, run some tests to further evaluate, I'm certain you will get the help you need.

I'm having the same problem with having to go to the bathroom all the time too! In answer to your question about going cold turkey, all I can say is that one day last year my doctor decided it best to cut down my dosage of Premarin in preparation of weaning me so that eventually I could quit taking it altogether. From October of last year until now we've been without medical insurance and have had to cut corners, so this is when I quit taking them completely. I plan to see a doctor once our new insurance kicks in (December 2007) and have labs, pap test, etc. to find out what's really going on with my body. In the meantime all I can do is wait it out and keep the fans blowing...LOL! Also, I agree with you about walking because the arthritis in my back is a real killer too as I spend most of the day and night sitting. Degenerative spinal disease (a fancy word for arthritis) is worsening due to lack of exercise, so this should be very helpful in both situations. Thanks for responding Shotzy! By the way, I have a friend with the same nickname and we're also the same age! Funny, huh? Her real first name however is Shirlene=)

Thank you Thurman for your post. I too agree that this forum/list is very useful for us step parents. Before i found this forum, i looked everywhere for books on step parenting or anything i could put my hand on to better understand my situation. Thanks to all who post here, your comments are always helpful and have helped me alot. It is true that sometimes it is difficult for others to understand the situation of being a step parent if he or she is not one themselves. I remember discussing my situation with my very best friend of 25 yrs. and her responses to my delemma were the same as many others : Why bother with that child? She is not even your biological child? etc. etc. etc. People can be mean. The only way i got to resolve my situation with my SD is really by coming to this forum and reading everything on the Internet that i could on the subject. I also truly, truly worked on detaching myself from her, by not letting her get to me as much, by simply ignoring her! So Thurman, i understand you when you say even your own family or friends don't really understand you in regards to your SD. So this just proves how we the step parents have to work on the situation ourselves and not with the objective of making the step child happy or to make them love us more but rather with the goal to make us the step parent a better person and a happier person. Go Thurman go. I also wanted to say Thurman....if you do practice some of the suggestions offered on this forum, like doing things by yourself and not always having to be in or at the events/activities where your SD, wife and son are at....you will notice that the entire family whole will not fall apart, your wife will still care for you and no your son will not love his mommy more than he love his daddy. I am once again going back to doctor tomorrow..Yesterday was a bad day....even cried alot which I dont usually do...I just hate the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach all the time.....I have also decided to stop the fight with the Im not taking any meds......I got a script for xanax last week but didnt want to take it,,,,but when I woke up at 2am I took one 25mg,,,and really didnt have a problem getting out of bed this morning and was good til about 11am...when the doom and gloom feeling came back and I called for an appointment..I have also starting walking every evening and exercising but I think I just need something to get me through....I just dont know what to do anymore........sorry to vent so much...

VALERIE -I AM ALSO GOING THRU A LONG PERIOD OF SICKNESS NAUSEA ,FLUSHING ,DIZZINESS.SWEATS ,ANDRENALINE RUSH .I HAVE BEEN SICK SINCE DECEMBER .BY MARCH IT WAS SO BAD I HAD TO GO OUT ON DISABILTY . BEEN TESTED FOR A THOUSAND THINGS NOTHING ONLY THING FOUND WAS LOW ESTROGEN .COULDN'T CONVINCE MY GYN THAT ALL THESE SYPTOMS ARE PART OF MENOPAUSE .I AM GLAD I WENT INTO THIS SITE TODAY IT MADE ME FEEL ALOT BETTER TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE ARE HAVING ALL DIFFERENT TYPES OF SYMPTOMS.

BE CAREFUL OF THE ANTI DEPRESSANT.FIND A DOCTOR THAT SPECIALIZES IN MENOPAUSE .BELEIVE ME YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE GOING THRU THIS .

Regarding the anti-depressants, I failed at two before trying the lowest dose available of Prozac. It is approved as a treatment for PMS and they even gave it a different name (do a search of Sarafem) because the name Prozac comes with so much baggage. Prozac takes 20 days to build up and have an effect, so you have to be patient. After 3 weeks I find I no longer have the terrible hopeless feelings I used to get in the morning. It is also supposed to be one of the easiest antidepressants to discontinue because it leaves your system slowly. In rationalizing my choice to take a drug that affects my brain chemistry I only had to think of all the other drugs that I take without a second thought: Caffeine, alcohol, cough medicines etc. etc.
