Question about the mind

I need to know that I'm not losing it completely. I've had two major changes in my life within the last 6 months. The first was a hip replacement but after I journeyed into menopause, it seems like my mind is scattered and not the same. Do any of you experience this?

I read that learning a second language will strenghen your mind so I may do that.

Yeah... don't worry, you aren't alone at all in this... learning ANYTHING will strengthen the mind. I saw this on tv the other day. I play memory games, anything you do will help. I also saw on the news the other day that MEDITATION is supposed to help a lot on memory improvement. It is very embarrassing to be scatterbrained, but I think it gets better... mine has.

Of course learning a second language is helpful.(I teach Spanish, you know.) Just kidding!

Yes, learning a second language is helpful because you can maintain the continuity of learning by building on it more than you can with other skills. ( I really did read that.) But reading a book, keeping active, working puzzles, all of this helps.

Are you talking about drawing a blank? This is a true menopause thing, even though I have always done it. Even in my 20's I may have started to introduce two friends of mine to each other, and I may have suddenly forgotten on of the names. This has gotten worse in these later years, and also I forget things I really should know. My friends do the same thing. I think this is because many things I think I should know are things I don't think about often.

If you are taking any medications at all, you might want to check with the doctor about the side effects.

Ezzirah, In general, my motto is "plant 'em if you've got 'em". Well, except when it is -22 degrees outside and sleeting....but I don't think anyone here would do that anyway. You could plant asparagus in January if you found it that earl.y and it likely would be fine, notwithstanding the fact that you live in a state where the temperatures can be 20 degrees below zero one day and then 60 or 80 degrees less than a week later. Almost any cold-hardy plants like asparagus, horseradish, rhubarb, strawberries sold bare root, etc., can be planted as soon as you see them in the stores. In fact, it is better for them to get out of those plastic bags and directly into the ground as soon as possible. Our Wal-Mart just got all their bare root stuff like that put out in the garden center within the last 3 or 4 days (seed potatoes and onion sets arrived a couple of weeks ago and then the rest this week), and their timing this year is pretty good because this week there is nice weather that will encourage people to plant the bare-root plants sooner rather than later. Bare-root plants left in the plastic bags too long often become diseased. I bought healthy, bare-root strawberries yesterday and will plant them later today to enlarge our small berry patch. I love planting season! I have put off planting asparagus forever because the bermuda and Johnson grasses encroach upon my garden from outside the fence continually. Because of asparagus' height, I've wanted to plant it along the north fence but know keeping the grass out will be a major ordeal. So, now I'm thinking I may plant in the bed that is second closest to the fence where the grass would be easier to keep out. Then, I could use the bed along the fence to grow something tall like pole beans that wouldn't be shaded too much by the asparagus. I hope your asparagus does well for you. Dawn

Good luck with your recovery Marin, I've heard horror stories about nasal surgery. To offer my 2cents, 1. Kill the ants, they spread various types of scale and are a nuisance when you try to bring your pots into the GH or worse the home. 2. Kill the ants. 3. Did I mention kill the ants? Find out where their nest is (in your pots) and soak those suckers. I've been using Bayer spray lately and it seems to work OK. I use it to spray a line around my house and garage and now have a kill on sight policy towards those little buggers. If I come across a nest or a trail to follow back to the nest, I will stop almost whatever I'm doing to douse them. 4. While at the box store buying poison to kill the ants, check on masks, maybe in the paint dept? I've seen them from simple surgical mask with filter inserts to serious canister type with micron filtration, carbon, etc. It might get pretty miserable wearing to heavy of a mask around in you heat and humidity. 'Course you could just get a bubble suit so at least it is air conditioned? Did I mention, kill the ants? best wishes, -Ethan

Hollyhocks (Alcea) are a biennial, so they make a low rosette of leaves the first year. Depending on how large the rosette gets this year, you may have just the low leaves next year, but more probably with your long fall, yours will be large enough so that you will get a flowering stalk shooting up next year. It will be the same plant, as Floral says. You may get a third year, but more probably your current plants will die at the end of next season after flowering. If you plant a few seeds each year (or let seeds sow themselves) then every year you will have some plants in the first year of just leaves and some plants flowering. And just to be confusing, there is another related plant, Malva (such as Zebrina), that is occasionally called hollyhocks that is perennial. It is much shorter.

I'm going to try lecithin granules. I was told that it helps memory and other menopause symptoms.

My experience has been that thoughts get lost very quickly. I can be trying to remember something and walk to a room to get it, and forget why I was there. Short term memory is fading. That's the major problem I've had with menopause. Well, along with hot flashes 6 times a day. I'm 60!

I would like to do come continuing ed., but with my memory, I'm not sure I could do it. I'm assuming this is not something more serious like Alz.

Good morning ladies, sakes alive am I glad I read this posting.I thought I was just losing my mind totally.The short term memory lost is very scary,so scary I find myself actually crying sometimes because I get so mad that I can't remember.You see I also had Bell's Palsy which also causes short term memory lost, the dr. says all my nerves are pulsing correctly, so he doesn't think thats the problem.Another thing is these mood swings and the acne, oh my God my face looks like a map of braille.This has all been going on for 2 yrs.. Everyone keeps saying your gonna be alright you just got a busy life to many things going on. yeah thats just cuz I can't remember what I started out doing in the first place so many more steps are added to accomplish stuff. Thanks so much for the therapy vent time. My new motto is live for today because I'm sure I won't remember yesterday. Thanks all, Micki

:o) Micki! Doesn't it just SUCK sometimes? May I suggest playing memory games? it doesn't work over night, but I noticed after about a year, I was getting better.
