Alchemilla vulgaris

Part Used: The leaves and flowering shoots.

Constituents:

Tannins, consisting mainly of glycosides of ellagic acid.

Salicylic acid, a trace.

Actions: Astringent, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, emmenagogue, vulnerary.

Indications: This and other species of Alchemilla have been widely used in folk medicine throughout Europe. Lady's Mantle will help reduce pains associated with periods as well as ameliorating excessive bleeding. It also has a role to play in easing the changes of the menopause. As an emmenagogue it stimulates the proper menstrual flow if there is any resistance. However, in the often apparently paradoxical way of herbal remedies, Lady's Mantle is a useful uterine astringent, used in both menorrhagia and metrorrhagia. Its astringency provides a role in the treatment of diarrhea and as a mouthwash for sores and ulcers and as a gargle for laryngitis.

Preparations & Dosage: Infusion: pour a cup of boiling water onto 2 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb and leave to infuse for l0-l5 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day. To help diarrhea and as a mouthwash or lotion, a stronger dosage is made by boiling the herb for a few minutes to extract all the tannin. Tincture: take 1-2 ml of the tincture three times a day.

What beautiful close-up pictures, Stan! I, too, work on the NY Times crossword every Sunday - I haven't done much on it today, because I've been busy with other things, but I really enjoy it. I can't tell how big the cocoon of the parasitic wasp is, but if it's real tiny, it may be the same !%#!%* insect that parasitizes red admiral cats. I think KC let one live and got a picture of the wasp, which is, not surprisingly, very tiny. I'm presently raising two red admirals from eggs, and both of them are continuing to grow and thrive, so I guess the wasp gets into the nest and injects its egg into the tiny caterpillar - they apparently do this early on, so yours were undoubtedly parasitized when you got them. It's interesting that your butterfly didn't have the white spot in the orange field on top and the pink on the underside. I vaguely remember a poster from Wisconsin saying once that not all American ladies had the white dot - all mine have it, so maybe it's a northern characteristic? I agree that American ladies have some of the most beautiful colors and underside patterns of any butterfly - how many butterflies do we have with pink? And I, too, call them "she" - they are ladies, aren't they? :) Sherry

Salvia coccinea has naturalized in so many parts of the tropics and sub-tropics, it is hard to tell exactly where it first arose. The best guess is somewhere around Sao Paulo or Rio de Janiero in Brazil. Its only close relative is Salvia subrotunda, found near Belo Horizonte further inland.

It's funny--I have some in the same bed and the ones on one side of the bed are amazingly lush and the other ones are 1/4 of the size. Same thing at my last house. I didn't think there was that much difference in the amount of light, but what else can it be? LOL - I saw on Dave's Garden website that they are prolific self-seeders. I can say that has never happened in my yard.
