Seeking info on New Orleans

Good morning, everyone.

I'll be going to New Orleans for an educational conference in May. I have a hotel room booked at the Marriott, since it's one of the conference hotels.

My husband will join me for the last night of the conference, and we'll stay on for 3 additional nights. That will be my first time to explore New Orleans, since I'll be very tied up with the educational sessions. (Yes, I actually attend all of them!)

Could anyone recommend a moderately-priced hotel for us so we can enjoy some sight-seeing after the conference? We don't want to be too far away from everything, but we also can't afford a 4-star hotel. I'd appreciate any help you could give me.

I haven't picked up a guide book or researched New Orleans, so if you have any tips on where we should go, I'd appreciate those as well. (Too bad I don't eat seafood, fish, or crustaceans; even though I grew up near the shore of Lake Superior, I never developed a taste for "swimmy things." My husband will love the food, though!)

Do NOT stay on Chef Hwy!!!!! We found out the hard way that is where the sleazy business is conducted.

If you get the change go to Cafe Roma in Gretna (just over the I-10 bridge and on Wall Blvd) and to Deaney's in Bucktown, along the south side of the lake. I am guessing both are still in business.

It is a great city, except for the fear of water, I loved living there.

I live for this--seeing more people discover gesneriads! Its almost like a "cause". Why? well, because they are such neat plants and because so few people grow them compared to the variety of gesneriads out there needing to be grown. Aeschynanthus are great plants and it sounds like your basic instincts are not too far off the mark. Epiphytes of the gesneriad family all grow in the same type of mixes. Depending on your watering style and other conditions they like anywhere from a "light mix" to a barky epiphyte mix. The first, would be like my standard mix for all gesneriads--three parts Canadian peat moss, two parts perlite and one to one and a half parts vermiculite. I am always changing these ratios and many use a 1-1-1 mix of these ingredients. But, you can also use a mix like this, with up to about 50% of a good potting mix. My friend Alan, who religiously believes in simplicity, uses straight Supersoil, and does pretty well. Aeschynanthus don't like to dry out excessively but will do well with light drying out between waterings. They generally like to be kept lightly moist and lightly fed all the time when in growth (warm season) with a little more dryness in their drought season (winter). So, I, who underwaters, use larger pots and still I sometimes dry them out too much. I use a lot of deep 6" plastic pots or regular "azalea" pots. Smaller plants go in 4 to 5 1/2 inch pots. Aeschynanthus come from Asia, whereas xmas cacti come from the mountains of coastal Brazil. So, aeschynanthus have widely varying needs for minimum temperatures. The most popular of the commercial varieties are somewhat more tender, coming from Bali. These would be lobbianus, pulcher, 'Pullobia', radicans. But, other species come from cooler mountain areas and grow very well all year outdoors. The most hardy are garrettii, gracilis, parasiticus, x 'splendidus', with all the other species and hybrids inbetween. Up here in cooler SF bay area, I grow mostly indoors but have the hardy ones outside, where they tolerate dips to slightly below 32. Garrettii can take even our big freezes. I really like nematanthus (the "goldfish plant") which comes in many varieties. They are native to mountains of coastal Brazil, and really do well for me as outdoor plants. And, they are not as water-needy as fuchsias, by a long shot. They have beautiful glossy small leaves and wonderful flowers shaped like little fishes. Nematanthus are epiphytes too, so do not generally do well planted out in the garden but make wonderful outdoor hanging basket and potted plants for bright shade. A few columneas are also hardy enough for all year growing outdoors (erythrophaea, schiediana, and 'Sundowner'). I am being a bit conservative in these recommendations. I have known people even in my area who grew many other examples of these genera outdoors all year long, with great results. You can also grow streptocarpus, chirita, petrocosmea, sinningia and quite a few other gesneriads outdoors. Its a big family. for sources, check out the "Suppliers" page on the AGGS web site. I enjoyed visiting Harold's a LOT, brought a few things home. It was so cool, DH even enjoyed it, he took some macro pics of orchids there. The people were beyond nice, too. Definitely a TON of ornamentals, but that was first week of April. I'm not sure seasons mean much down there. There's an aquatic garden/store just east of the FQ but I have yet to make it over to that store. Are you a vine-o-phile? On Esplanade, just north of Bourbon St, there's a house with mature Syngonium and Pothos (Epipremnum) going up the 2 trees in front. Smashing!

I wouldn't worry about the chlorine in the water affecting your plants. My swimming pool has plants planted around all the pool side drains and many times the overflow leaches around these plants. I have never lost any plants from the chlorinated water. I would definitely not drink any of the water though. Best of luck with your plants!!!

My favorite nursery is Harold's in Bywater. http://haroldsplants.com/ My second favorite is close to Harold's, American Aquatic Gardens. http://www.americanaquaticgardens.com/ Both have a heavy leaning towards tropicals and some very interesting palms, water plants. As far as bulbs, only swamp and hurricane lilies grow here, and those are, sadly, rarely sold commercially.

I was there in dec and stayed at the Hampton Inn on Carondelt st and was very happy w/it.It wasnt super expensive and was very nice and clean.Also had a good continental breakfast.You can go to neworleans.com and get lots of great info online,including booking hotel rooms.

I've fount tripadvisor.com to be very helpful when visiting a city I've never been to before. You don't have to join to read the posts and there are usually plenty. Have fun!

we are planning a driving trip there in the next few springs, we are about 8 hrs drive away in orlando. i want to see spring camellias & gardens in the LA area as well as possibly include mardi gras. my dh is only interested in the food and insectarium...~ liz

I like the Dauphine Orleans Hotel.
Smallish, staff is friendly and helpful and it is within walking distance to those things you'll want to see/do.

When I was there, they had an expanded continental breakfast, which was great.

You must go the the French Quarter..lots of quaint shops. Another high spot is their Botancial Garden, Amazing!! Ride the horse and buggy around the square. In this same area is a beautiful catheral you can tour...walking tours are available, peer into the courtyards, beautiful gardens.
Bourbon street in the daytime is fine, at night I would be leary unless you are in a crowd. There are several restaurants, most have their menu with prices posted outside. Never be afraid to walk in one and ask to see a menu before you are seated.... Have fun...

There is a range of resturant selections in the French Quarter, on Burbon St, and just off Burbon St.

Be sure to take walk or drive on residential streets in the French Quarter to see antebellum houses. Most are 2 and 3 story houses on smallish lots. The architecture is beautiful.

Strike up conversations with the locals. Maybe they will tell you about local customs, for example, 1) a Civil War statute of a Confederate hero mounted on a horse - the horse's rear end point north; and 2) burial practices. There is big bruial problem in New Orleans becasue of the high water table.

And oh, the Battle of New Orleans lead by Andrew Jackson was totally unnecessary. That battle was fought after the war had been declared over and the treaty signed. Trouble was, slow communications. The treaty was negotiated in Europe and it took some time (by sailing ship) for the word to reach the front.

And while you are there, find out exactly was is "Mock Turtle Soup", that is, find out the meat ingredient of true mock turtle soup. It is a dish that was concocted by the chefs while New Orleans was under seige and food supplies were short.

Watch out for the coffee. Many business establishments have 2 coffee pots: One is regular coffee and the other one contains chicory, a bitter brew.

I lived there many years ago and I am sure things have changed a lot since then, but I hear that St. Charles Avenue (Where I lived) is still beautiful and well kept. There are many bed and breakfasts in the area and you might enjoy staying there instead of a hotel. It's right on the streetcar line and is convenient for sightseeing. Have a wonderful time and interact with some of the locals. Don't miss the French Quarter! I wish I could join you! Bettye/AZ

Oh, New Orleans is so wonderful! Go to the Botanical Gardens; visit Jackson Square and get your fortune told and watch the artists at work; walk the Garden District and see the lovely homes; go to the Cafe du Monde for bagnets and coffee (and chicory adds taste, not bitterness!); rent a car and drive the River Road and visit some of the plantations; and EAT! New Orleans has the most wonderful cuisine, and it seems everyone cooks, and cooks well--it is hard to get a bad meal in New Orleans unless you go to a chain restaurant.
Try some of the small hotels in the French Quarter--the prices are very reasonable, the charm is astounding, and the service is excellent. Contact the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce for a list of hotels and their rates.

Thanks, everyone! Reading about all the neat things to see and do is making me even more excited (and wishing DH and I would have planned one more day together, after the conference).

I love the wonderful Sunday brunch at The Court of the Two Sisters in the French Quarter. Try to get a table in the garden patio. Do get some beignets at the Cafe du Monde; makes a nice last stop befoe bedtime, but any time they are good. You can also buy boxed beignet mix to take home.

A muffeletta across from Cafe du Monde, It's right on the corner, and you can go in from either side. Sit at the bar, order a cold beer and a muffeletta!

And yes, brunch at The Court of Two Sisters.
