Do you remember CompuServe?

CompuServe was my first experience with message boards. It was back in the 1980s, and we called them bulletin boards. CS covered all sorts of topics. I was active in boards for writers, music lovers, pet lovers, and gardeners.
Diana Gabaldon was a member of one of the writing boards I frequented. I don't know if she was published at the time, but she was very knowledgeable, and generous with her knowledge. I remember discussions with a lot of very bright people on the CS boards. I don't remember that the discussions were censored in any way, although each board had a person who was in charge. I forget what they were called. I think they were volunteers.
The recent posts about AOL shutting down its message boards prompted me to think of CompuServe. It was so big, and seemingly so innovative.....I have no idea what happened to it, or why. Do you?
