Let's review the Grammys, shall we?

For once I watched the whole show (well, most of it). I thought LL Cool J did a nice job of emceeing. I liked the way he started out the show, paying tribute to Whitney Houston in a way that was just right, I thought. Later, I was blown away by Jennifer Hudson's tribute rendition of "I Will Always Love You." She didn't try to emulate Whitney at all, but sang it with a lot of her own feelings. Beautiful voice.

I was happy to see Glen Campbell's excellent performance! The last time I saw him on TV, he seemed more confused (he has Alzheimer's), so I was a little nervous for him this time. But he was terrific.

Did anyone notice the two women sitting and texting during his standing ovation? Not nice.

It was great to see the remaining Beach Boys together again. I thought the beginning of their song was a little ragged (understandably, considering how long it's been since they performed together), but it picked up when the other musicians joined them.

I loved Adele's performance--and how great that she isn't skinny as a rail, doesn't strip, and doesn't find it necessary to have a gimmick or special effects. Normally I'm not crazy about gum-chewing at awards ceremonies (or anywhere else), but it seemed part of her naturalness.

I like Carrie Underwood a lot, and she did her best, but she seemed an odd choice for a duet with Tony Bennett. Perhaps that was the point, but she was clearly out of her element.

Loved the Alicia Keys/Bonnie Raitt tribute to Etta James.

Paul McCartney still rocks!

I'm sure I'm showing my age, but I didn't like all the musical numbers. IMO, the worst of them was Nicki Minaj's performance. Is she trying (and failing) to be a black Gaga? I never heard of her before last night, and if I never hear (or see) her again, it will be too soon. :-)

I agree with all of your review! I thought Glen Campbell gave an exceptional performance considering his problems and I was happy to see that. He looked so much better than he did the last time I saw him. I did not like Taylor Swift's braided, messy hair and clothing for the one performance. Other than that, she was good, in my opinion.

I was just telling a friend that I thought it was the best 'awards' show that I have seen in a long time.

About those 2 women who were sitting and texting...I felt they were rude, and wondering if they were maybe seat fillers?? (For those who may not know; Seat Fillers are everyday people who keep a seat occupied when a guest goes to the bathroom. The camera doesn't want to show empty seats during an airing.)

Hi everyone. Momto3 - This floor plan is indeed beautiful, as the pictures of the finished house show. And some of the suggestions given by others were little nuggets of gold to keep in mind! MyDreamHome, I love your laundry room - I have not come across one that is in that small a space and yet works as efficiently as yours does. The garbage bins for laundry are a wonderful idea! I too fold in my laundry in the laundry room as soon as items come out of the dryer - otherwise they need ironing, and I am not into that (unless it is part of my quilting - that is a different story). For those many people who were enquiring about how to make this large house smaller (I believe it is 5,000 square feet, give or take a couple hundred): some great suggestions were made about making some rooms smaller (ie - do you need a 30+ by 15+ playroom, and a 16+ by 14+ breakfast area? We would all like it, but...). However I have two other suggestions as well. This house, built as a single-story home, has a huge footprint. That means a huge basement or slab, and a huge roof surface. Furthermore, the roof will be quite high, simply because of the area it has to cover. So... You could consider moving some or all of the bedrooms upstairs, and while this may not reduce the square footage of the home, it will reduce the cost of building significantly (the cost per square foot will go down significantly because this area does not need its own basement/slab or roof). For example, if you put 1500 square feet of bedrooms/bathrooms upstairs, you will reduce your footprint and roof area by that amount - the size of a small-mid size house! With some interesting jut-outs, dormers and some sloped ceilings, you can make a very interesting as well as a light and airy second floor. In fact, a friend of mine did just this - they planned a large single-level house, and the architect suggested that with almost no changes to the roof other than a couple of dormers, they could put in a large master suite and two additional bedrooms and another bath on the second floor. They agreed, and then re-envisioned the main floor to keep the footprint the same size as before, giving them about 1/3 more living space for very little extra money. Just one word of warning: it will impact the layout of the roof trusses, and perhaps even the type of truss used, so that you have full use of the available height. So include this in the plan before you start building - even if you plan to finish the space later (another advantage of reducing the footprint - you can finish off the other levels later if money is an issue and yet you expect your family to grow). Similarly if you build the house with a basement and your land has just a bit of a slope to it, with some forethought you can have a walk-out basement with large windows and French or sliding doors...or at worst, finished rooms with large windows. Then you can put some of the bedrooms and the play room downstairs and still have them bright and airy. If you live where you have to do a basement anyway, you double the size of your (single story) house by utilizing the basement. A current trend in my area is for builders to use 9-10 foot ceilings in the basement to ensure that the area is not claustrophobic (and it allows for bigger windows if the house sits a bit higher). Often with a bit of landscape planning, enough of a slope can be created when the footings and the basement are laid down. Again here, if you plan to finish the basement (now or later), give it some thought so that you do not limit your options when you do finish it. For example, you may want to use longer or different types of beams to support the main floor to reduce the number of posts in the basement. And you may want to ensure that your posts are no closer that 12 or 15 feet apart - so that you likely won't have a post in the middle of where you would like to have a bedroom. It is also important to have a plan so that you can make the best use of windows, and put larger ones in if possible. Every bedroom must have an egress window (which is not very big), so don't plan on sticking a bedroom in the front of the house unless you are prepared to have windows at the front, etc. Plumbing is easier if it is roughed in now as well, although if you change your mind, it can be moved easily enough (but it costs $$). Has anyone tried either of these options? I would draw out a sample, but I don't currently have a couple of free hours - sorry... PS - sorry for the length of this post...

I am at a stage of moving forward so I need make some quick decisions. I feel like it is good for me to sit down and summarize where my plan stands right now and specific areas of concerns needing help. I ended up with something really long and here it is. Thanks for your reading and feedbacks! Jf 1. Family 2 adults, 3 children (13 yr daughter, 9 yr son, and a soon to be born baby boy) Lot constraint and house orientation / zones The lot is close to 2 streets out side the subdivision and it is close to the gate entrance. There would be noise from the street. The traffic is not that bad at this time as there is a T stop on one and there are speed bumps on the other. There are about 40 houses inside the community and being in a corner lot I do have concerns about the flashing light from cars entering the gate and making left turn during nights. Besides landscaping, any architectural considerations for this issue? The bedrooms are to the east and south (except a bedroom for my daughter on the 2nd floor to the front) for reduced noise and better privacy. More public and service areas like study, dining, kitchen, laundry and garage are to the front north and right west side nearing the streets. The living is in the middle to have good view of the backyard and sufficient lights. I am most concerned about the west side wall. It will be very hot in the summer here so I am trying to avoid windows as much as I can. I do think I need something in the breakfast so I put one window there. There is another one in the laundry for drying clothes. Windows in the garage would be ok just for appearance I guess. I may still need a small window in the kitchen for better ventilation as we cook a lot at home. We may also consider skylight in the kitchen if it is too dark there. The garage in the back has rear entry door. I understand we need may about 28ft driveway in front of the garage to have big enough turn radius to enter and backout from the west street. I would love to have a side entry garage. However, I was told that I need 18ft away from the property line and that would push the garage 8ft to the east and block 8ft, or about half of the current living area view. So I gave up that idea. 3. Types, number and sizes of rooms My current house have a living area of about 1600sqft witht the four of us and it has a three bedrooms(14'6x12', 11'x10'6, 11'x10'6), 1 small study (14'6x8'4), one eating area (14'x10'6), a kitchen (14'x10'4). The living room is 18'x14'2. The two bathrooms are kind of small. We having been living there for over 8yrs and it is really not too bad. The new house has a planned living area of about 3200sqft, which doubles what we have right now. So it shall be more than adequate for us. My wife prefers bigger kitchen and living areas over bigger bedrooms. We would also like comftable bathrooms and can never have enough closets and storage space. She also insists on separate dining and breakfast instead of one big eating area. She doesn't mind an OK sized breafast like 9'x9' and we plan to use the dinging as a guest living/sitting area or playroom as formal dining is not something we do often. Masterbed room downstairs. It seems that most of my friends from the north/Canada they have masterbed upstairs and I understand heating in cold weather maybe one big consideration for them. While we love the idea of keeping an eye on the kids, we are mainly concerned as we age we may not like the idea of walking up and down the stairs. We also do not mind letting the soon to be teens to have some of their own activies out of our sight. Gameroom upstairs. We think we need some open area on the 2nd floor to play or just sit down and relax. It is like a gameroom/familyroom multiuse. I understtand it would be noisy to the 2nd floor bedrooms and the living area below. We need carpet flooring and some noise reduction, floor hardening techniques. 3.5 baths. There would be a powder room/guest bath on the main floor. On the second floor, my daughter will have her own bathroom. The issue is bathroom setup for the two boys. I am proposing a shared bath for them and guests in the gameroom. I tried the idea of separate bathrooms by halving the bath nearby the gameroom. It is kind of tight and it maybe more expensive so I gave it up. Lundry/mudroom. I think a decent size there would be of good use. The main constraint is budget here. Staircase As I am planning to use the area to the left of the kitchen upstairs for all the 2nd floor needs, the staircase has to connect to center of that area so that we have hallways surrounding it to access all the nearby rooms. The issue is where it shall start on the 1st floor and which type of stair case is better for us. I tried the idea of curved staircase in the foyer (starting from somewhere close to the dining left wall). it would be too costly to build. An alternative option is to build a L or even multi turns. We did not pursue it as my wife has the diea of being able to see kids coming down from 2nd floor or people entering from the mainfloor going upstairs from the kitchen. Another concern is that while an open staircase in the 2 story foyer looks grand, it has to be done right otherwise it is too striking and blocking everything from the entrance view. The proposed U shape staircase is kind of half open to the living and visible from the kitchen and not directly in foyer. For an area of 11' by 7'2" we shall have enough room to acheive the right rise/run for a comfortable stairway. 5. Powderroom location Once the staircase location is fixed. The next biggest challening is to find the right place for the 5'x6' half-bath. I have tried at least 3 different places. 5.1. Under the staircase off study room. The place can be easily identified. The problem is that is taken space from the study and it has some views from dining. 5.2. Close to the staircase off masterbed hallway and masterbath. It has very good privacy for the guests. However, it is taken some area from the masterbath and make the setup there difficult. It also will have exposure to masterbed room that is not too good. 5.3 Close to the Garage inside the laundry/mudroom area. Privacy is good. Location is OK (it is close to the door to garage). It is taken part of the area from laundry so make the laundry small and difficult to set up. Additional good thing of not putting the powderroom close to the foyer is that the coat closet would be under the staircase and the study would be increased to its original planed size. Right now I am inclined to place the powderroom nearby the garage door. 6. Kitchen Right now the kitchen has a size of 14'6 x 14'. There would be some layout tuning to separte the different tasks of cooking, cleaning, and baking. One thing I would like to do is to recess the right side wall so that the frige is not sticking out to block the walk way. 7. Bathroom Next, I need to examine the layouts of the bathrooms. As kitchen and bathrooms are most expensive and we are using them so often, I would like to make sure we are getting most out of it and setting up them right. Closets and Storage I already mentioned that we never have enough storage space. Make sure we have access to under the stair space. I also have a door to access the attic in the 2nd floor. There would be some unfinished bonus storage space there. Laundry chute. I am not sure if it is doable but we (especially the kids) would love the idea of a chute from the gameroom to the laundry/mudroom.

The sqft of the house has been reduced to a number that I feel comfortable with. I am OK with the overall design. While I am still do not like the kitchen layout, I am trying to see if things can work out by staying within the footprints of the house. Here is a modified layout of the area that I did. 1. One side of the mudroom cubbies and the desk were taken out. That will give more space to laundry/pwdr and help with the garage entrance hall. 2. I like the idea of keeping the main sink/dw on the side (as opposed to the serving island). I just moved it to the side close to the breakfast area instead of the HVAC side. That will give us bettter view to the backyard and keep sight on kids going up/down on the stairs. 3. I am not sure about the frige/oven placement. a) I tried to switch the two. That will need a foot clearance from the fridge to the pantry wall and we can do storage outside/inside the pantry. A well defined work triangle may help the work. However, it may be a little bit cramped there. b) The current configuration may help the space a ittle bit as we are not baking that often. My biggest concern is we do not have a good triangle now. The cooktop to the frige distance is over 11ft. We do have an island as a landing space in the middle. Not sure how bad is that. I don't want to get stuck with the details so I let the archiec to proceed with the design. I do have some questions regarding issues beyond floor plans. But I will seek answers/help with new posts. Thank you again, Kate for your detailed review of your Bluestar Platimum Range. You have been a big help. In September, after several years of reading many reviews, we finally took the plunge and ordered a Bluestar 48” RNB Range with the integrated rolled steel griddle. We received it in October and I have no regrets! Everything about this range I love. My Christmas cookies all came out perfect; nicely browned outside and moist on the inside. Cheesecake, brownies, bread, and pizza have all baked beautifully. Meats and casseroles cooked evenly and on time. My old Thermador has not baked evenly in a very long time and often stopped in the middle of baking. The small oven does a wonderful job. Both ovens heat up quickly. My old small oven was useless. It took nearly an hour to heat up and twice as long to cook. I cooked two 9 x 13 dishes at once on Christmas day and they were both finished at the same time. I could never do that in my Thermador. The ovens clean up easily, if you just take a few minutes after a spill and clean it. We love the open burners and would never go back to sealed burners. Searing and Wok cooking is unbelievable. I cook with cast iron pans and love that the burners are all cast iron. They are much easier to keep clean and nice looking. Since I do a lot of cooking, the stainless sealed burners on my Thermador lost their shine and became discolored in a couple of years. Those who are concerned about rust will find these burners do not rust unless you allow water to sit on them. I also love the trays underneath that catch spills and debris. I put them in the dishwasher every couple of weeks and the come out like new. My RNB came with an integrated rolled steel griddle. I am very happy with the steel griddle. It heats evenly and cleans up easily. My old griddle came with a non-stick surface which eventually came off and left debris in our food. It did not clean up well at all. Steel or cast iron is the way to go. I mentioned my Thermador repeatedly because when you go to these high end appliance stores and ask, what are the top line of ranges, they always say the Wolfe and the Thermador. They sound like the nicest, with a lot of great features. But the fact that they are run with computer operated parts makes them very expensive to repair. And repairs they will need. The Thermador gas range has self-cleaning ovens. The high temperatures they use for the self-cleaning feature reduces the life of computer components that run the range. I have found the Bluestar is simple but works so well.

I didn't see all of it, just the last 90 minutes or so. I loved Taylor's performance, and thought the clothing was reminiscent of the photos of Dorothea Lange's photos of migrant workers in the thirties.

I loved, loved, loved Adele and am so happy her voice is intact after her vocal cord bleed. But then I have loved Adele since her "19" album.

I loved JHud's version of the Whitney song, and actually got a tear in my eye.

Not quite sure what Nicki Minaj's vision was, but I enjoyed the production without liking the music. Alisande, she performed at the superbowl with Madonna and has a huge hit with "Superbass".

And, of course, got to see someone I know win a Grammy for best new Artist, Bon Iver. A little awkward acceptance speech, and I missed their first award.

The Catholic church has been at war with Obama over birth control recently; I was thinking last night maybe now the Bishops will turn their wrath on Nicki Minaj. LOL

I didn't know about Seat Fillers, Maddielee, but if that's what they were I predict they don't get hired again. Turns out we weren't the only ones who noticed them.

Somehow I didn't see Taylor Swift's "country" outfit, but I loved her formal gown.

Sleeperblues, do you know Bon Iver personally? I wasn't familiar with their music either.

BTW, Adele thanked radio stations for playing "Rolling in the Deep," which she said enabled it to cross over. She said it wasn't a pop song. What kind of song is it? I love it, and would have called it pop. But I'm definitely not up on all the current song genres.

I loved the whole thing. I'm a big Adele fan..great voice, and of course I like the oldies. Paul, Bruce, Beach boys and Glenn Campbell. They should knock the snot of those texting girls when every one else was giving Campbell a standing O. What total disrespect. You are at the Grammys the biggest show in town and yet you TEXT??? Punks. Love Taylor's straight hair..hate her curls. She's so pretty and talented. Hated the Nicki part ..never heard of her till last night. Loved Jen Hudson's song to Whitney. There's a voice as good as hers was in it's prime.

Agree with everything said. Sometimes it's really hard to watch the "newcomers". The serious grab for attention, just dosen't do it for me. Truely talented people don't need all that distraction.
Otherwise, very good show. Loved the old guys.

I watched all but the last half hour. Thought LLCool J did a nice job... love Adele, Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry - so I was happy to see them there. Loved the Beach Boys song and was surprised at their advanced ages that most of them still sounded really good. Glen Campbell was wonderful too!

Great show for the most part. I had never heard of Bon Iver or Barton Hollow (the folk singers), but liked what I heard well enough to add some of their stuff to my Amazon 'wish list'.

Sleepblues, you personally know Bon Iver? I love them, have one of their CD's sitting in the drawer right next to me at work!

I loved Adele, she's fabulous and is herself and I love her voice. Unfortunately she's being being WAY overplayed on the radio and I think it will burn people out on her. Her songs are wonderful, but after the 10,000 time, you get annoyed.

Jennifer Hudson did an great job with I Will Always Love You, but it really made me think that nobody sounds as amazing as Whitney.

Lady Gaga dresses weird/too revealing, but I don't think she'd ever try and be as offensive as Nikki was last night. I think she is trying to be outragous for popularity, but while Gaga sings about loving yourself for who you are, etc. (overall good messages), Nikki is straight up trying to be vulgar and offend particular groups. Gross.

I googled "Rolling In The Deep". Adele, according to a quote describes it as a "dark blues-y gospel disco tune". I was curious also. I thought it was Pop.

Tony Bennett seem a bit confused towards the middle/end of the song, but was better when Carrie Underwood steped up to sing.. Maybe he is also showing his age (as we all are). He picked it up right away.
I do wish the Beach Boys had done one of my favorites--Surfing USA--but then that would really bring back memories to some of us!
I am sad that Adele won so many awards. She is good, but to me not that good. Others got shoved out.

This was the first time in years that I watched the entire show. I thought it was great and LL did an outstanding job. The tributes to Whitney were well done and as always Jennifer Hudson sang from her heart.

I noticed when they did the tribute to those who had passed, they did not show Don Cornelius. LL immediately made mention of him after the tribute ended. I'm guessing someone forgot to add him.

One of my a favorite performances was Bruno Mars. Loved the dancing, singing and energy. Adele was also amazing. My least favorite was Nicki Minaj, not sure how to describe it other than freaky and nightmarish. I do like a couple of her songs, BUT definetly not that one.

All in all a very good night!

Bruce Springsteen-rocked!!!!!!!! Never heard of Bruno Mars, but loved his singing and dancing! Love Adele. Great show!

I did not wath the show, but want to tell you that I have both of Tony Bennett's Duets albums, and they are great! He and Lady Gaga sing The Lady Is A Tramp... Gaga is wonderful in it, and Tony giggles a little. Carrie Underwood, also great doing It Had To Be You. You should hear Queen Latifa and Tony sing Who Can I Turn To...FABULOUS! k.d. lang has never been better. Those women can belt outta tune with the best of 'em!

Also on Duets II are Amy Winehouse, john Mayer, Natalie Cole, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, and others. It is a great album, in my
opinion better than Duets I. Hub and I saw Duets II on PBS a few weeks ago, loved it, so bought both discs. DI features Bono, Buble, sting, Paul McCartney, Diana Krall, B. Streisand, Dixie Chicks, and others.

Alisande, I agree with you 100%. We missed the beginning of the show so didn't see the Beach Boys, would have loved to! After Nicki's performance we both said "What was that?" I sort of liked her before that.

I saw the texting too, shows a lot of class.

I thought Glenn Campbell did a great job, tho he was lost on the stage at the end. He looked older to me last night, I had seen him on Kelly or Ellen when he was on.

Tony Bennett and Carrie sang that on his Duets II CD, I love both of those cds.

I too loved Adele! I am so glad she won, what an emotional evening for her.

We thought Paul McCartney did GREAT! I don't know Bon Iver but I loved his stumbling speech, it was pure and from the heart.

The Memorium didn't list Don Cornelius nor did it include Etta James, I found that odd.

And as good as I thought Jennifer Hudson did (and it had to be so hard for her to do it) I really wish someone had talked her out of that dress and into one that fit.

My daughter's boyfriend loves Nicki Minaj, why I have no idea. She texted him about how bad that performance was when we were watching it last night. He missed it, his dad was watching their tv. It was awful. Lauren has played her songs for me and I hate her voice.

Loved Taylor Swift's performance, costumes and all. So did Lauren. Hated Paul McCarty's first song...the Valentine song. Loved the all the old guys singing and playing together with the younger guys. It was great, although, I didn't know who over half of them were.

Loved Glen Campbell's song, grew up listening to him as a child, even though I hate Rhinestone Cowboy. They overplayed it when it first came out and I never could stand that song but I did enjoy it last night.

Fast forwarded through Tony Bennett and Carrie Underwood's song, it wasn't great.

Didn't care for a lot of the groups/singers, maybe I'm just getting old. I liked Adele, and may have to buy a CD of her's.

Jenn and Alisande, I don't know Justin Vernon from Bon Iver personally, but my kids have met him. He has been musically talented since high school when he and about 8 friends put together a group called Mount Vernon, which was a jazz band. They even released a cd. 3 years ago Justin came to the school and performed some Bon Iver songs with the jazz band as a fundraiser because they were invited to play in the prestigious Essentially Ellington competition in NYC. It was a sold out, packed house and he was awesome. I've never seen him with the Bon Iver band, though.

I never knew the guy from The Sopranos is in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band before last night. Steve Van Zandt. Where have I been?

I only saw the first hour and the last half hour because I was watching Downton Abbey.

You can catch Van Zandt on the Netflix series "Lilyhammer." I started watching it last week.

Don't feel bad, Dedtired . . . I didn't know he was in The Sopranos, and I didn't know he was in the E Street Band either. :-)

I thought the whole show just rocked...I had the good sense to set the TIVO up Saturday night cause I was working Sunday...I got home right as Bruce Springsteen was singing and just listened and played on the puter while coming back down to earth...I'm so glad I tivo'd it cause I've watched it on and off tonight...Hubster doesn't watch shows like this but he enjoyed seeing the Beach Boys, Tony Bennett, and Glen Campbell perform...It was very tasteful as far as Whitney goes...I know it had to be really hard for Jennifer to sing that song...it sure made my eyes well up...

I think Adele is the bomb...I've been humming her song all day...I hope she has a long and wonderful career! I loved the Target commercial that came on with the little girl on the bus singing her song and all the other kids joined in!

I didn't watch any of it last night but I did tape the show and watched it today. How nice to be able to fast forward though the commercials and avoid the performers that I have no interest in watching.

My DD gave me Adele's CD last year and I was thrilled that she won. What a charming individual - so talented and apparently so normal! How refreshing.

It was great to see the Beach Boys again..so much better than 'Maroon 5' who covered them. Mike Love is still a good looking man. Good old Glen Campbell should looked like he loved performing on stage. How bittersweet to know that this is his final tour.

I loved the finale with all the guitarists jamming together - Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, and my favorite - Dave Groh, still head banging after all these years.

I ususally don't watch. Last night was no exception. I have heard clips though. It amazes me that hollywood and music peeps decry domestic violence,there have been some psa's and they gave their prayer for Whitney, then they give a rousing greeting for Chris Brown, who, practically to the day beat the living daylights out of Rhianna (sp). That was hard to see.
I like looking at the fashions the day after, Fergie looked like she was wearing a Halloween tablecloth over granny panties! ahahahahaa...

The way Adele styles her hair and makeup make her look 43, not 23! Love her voice!

Who were the 2 little girls who had ELLEN written across the front of their shirts?
I saw them on the yahoo home page of people arriving for the emmys.

Bengardening, the two little girls were Ellen's red carpet correspondents. She found them on youtube several months ago singing and dancing a Nicki Minaj song. They are huge fans. The two girls are cousins and I think they are from England. They are hysterical. Ellen has them on every couple of months. They were also her correspondents for the American Music Awards.

Bengardening, they are from Britain, one of them (the one with dark hair) adores Nicki Manaj and was on You Tube performing her song. Ellen saw it and brought them here, put them on her show and introduced them to Nicki. When it turned out that Nicki was going to be on the Grammy's Ellen sent them to the Grammy's as her Red Carpet Roving Reporters...... I wonder what she (Ellen) thought of the girls seeing Nicki's performance.....wonder what their parents thought of it.

Lynn, I too wondered what Ellen and the girls parent's were thinking as they watched Nicki's performance. The girls probably thought it was great.

I thought it was qutie funny that Ellen and one of her assistants dressed up as the two girls for the Halloween show.
