A second dishwasher
Comments (17)We've had our 2nd dishwasher installed for about 2 weeks now. Having a family of 9 has made this extra DW a real blessing to us. We've gone from handwashing almost all of our mixing bowls, pots, pans, and baking equipment, to putting almost everything in the DW. It amazes me how quickly they both fill up and need to be run. I've also been able to put away my drying rack and just use a microfiber mat for the few things that we still hand wash. Hooray! When we were trying to decide on the location of the 2nd unit, I leaned pretty heavily on Rhome's experiences, which I've linked below. It took some faith since I had no first hand experience. I thought really hard about putting one in our island at the prep sink and another at the separate cleanup zone. In the end, I decided to trust what Rhome was saying. For us, having both at the cleanup sink is working really well. I think it would have been more awkward to use them if we had split them up. It's really nice to be able to pile everything in the super single sink (another opportunity to trust GW members that worked out really great) and then load the 2 DWs from there. I thought one DW would be primarily for dishes and the other primarily for cooking and baking equipment, but the reality is that things get intermingled depending on where there are open spaces as we load them up. Hope your husband will be able to come back home soon, Lavender. Blessings on you both! Comments (7)Thanks for the response and consideration! It is an exterior wall. I was only suggesting removing the toekicks because it seems somehow the air is coming in from floor level--perhaps between the floor and the vertical drywall (on the walls). Most of the floor is visible from the basement, except those 14" or so around the perimeter of the kitchen which are obscured by the foundation, which is rather thick at approx. 14" of stone. The corner has a gas line but that is only routed through the wall to the basement--it doesn't penetrate the outside of the house. It is not near the stove vent or any exterior electrical penetrations. Other thoughts? Thanks for any insight! Dave...See MoreDishwasher around corner from sink?
Comments (10)Ideagirl - I had this question in planning too. FWIW at the time people noted it would be OK, but I think there are several good points here. It's interesting that there's a bit of a plumbing issue - not insurmountable but not ideal to have that long line. Someone made the point to me to be sure to leave at least one drawer cab space between the corner and the DW drawer. I have a lazy susan in the corner which is just 12". I just went and pulled out a board to simulate the open DW door and indeed it is very tight! Grump. What was(n't) I thinking? And while the pullout may come out a bit, it won't come out fully. So I may just come to rue the design. But what I hadn't thought about and no one caught -- I hadn't even caught it until just now when it was pointed out (we haven't lived in our kitchen yet) is how the DW drawer eclipses the compost pullout. I really like the pullout I got and have plans to attach a third flat drawer on top of the two lower pullout trash and recycle cans. But ... drat it is so true that these will conflict with the DW door I think. Again, I haven't lived in the space yet but just from seeing the layout with the DW to the side, I'm surprised at how not-horrible it seems from a filling-from-sink standpoint. Someone here had noted this so I eventually decided to trust them as it was the best layout for us. But there is also the emptying-angle not to forget. I am not sure what to do about the DW door trash pullout conflict! You've got some time though, and good observations....See MoreOne last request for layout feedback - dishwasher in peninsula
Comments (24)The problem with planning to do all your prep on the island is that it's too far away from the range plus it will entail quite a bit of zone-crossing (crossing the Cleanup Zone when moving b/w the Prep & Cooking Zones). Most people find they prep where (1) there's a water source very close by and (2) near the range, usually b/w the water source and range. Can the DR door be moved? Do you have a refrigerator picked out? Most standard-depth refrigerators are closer to 36" deep when you include the handles. Then, you must include the air space/clearance required behind it. The final depth of a standard depth refrigerator can be over 36" in many cases. I'm asking about this b/c you show a 30" deep refrigerator...the depth of most counter-depth refrigerators. Could you recess the refrigerator into the wall at least 3"? That would help. (If it's recessed into the wall but not so far as into the room behind it, you should gain 3" or so.) If you can move the DR doorway...how about something like one of these? [Corner sink...to get a sink bigger than 24 or 25 inches, yes, you would need a 42" sink base. Did your DH say why he doesn't want a corner sink?]...See MoreUser
