Diamond Ring

WeÂre shopping for a diamond for a ring, but itÂs so hard to select one, everyone is giving me different info. Any advice?

What questions do you have? I have a lot of knowledge about this - I am an "analyzer" shopper, and I once wrote an article about this for a local paper.

LOL dody. i have had similiar reactions to some of my jewelry, including rings, necklaces and earrings. i've had complete strangers grab my hands to have a closer look at 2 different rings that i don't think are that big a deal in the world of jewelry. one is a 2 ct solitaire w/ side bars of sapphire and the other is a 3 ct sapphire w/ trillion cut 1 ct diamonds on the sides. onetime we were purchasing an antique rifle and the salesman would just not leave that sapphire ring alone. he kept grabbing my hand and going on and on about how much it must have cost...it was embarrassing. i love my jewelry and don't buy it to get attention i happen to love jems and buy it for myself as a treat not for show. i've had people grab a journey necklace and poke at a pair of 4 ct earrings sooo much i don't wear them anymore. i certainly don't mind if someone asks but more often they don't, as if i wear things for showing. if someone asked if something was real it wouldn't bother me much, i know they are, as long as they keep their hands off me lol ~ liz

We inherited three diamonds from my DHs family. One was from his great uncle's pinky ring. We had it made into a drop pendant of the diamond only in a thin rim of silver, and hung it on a slender chain. That was a gift from us to our only daughter to wear on her wedding day with the diamond studs her groom gave her. We have about a 1 carat diamond from his grandmother's ring, and that stone has been offered to our son to put in a setting for his fiance, whenever he finally decides to get engaged. DH also had a mother's ring made for me, with stones for our 3 children--two emeralds and one sapphire. But it looked too dark and needed sparkle with those dark stones, and so we put in the center of them a smaller diamond from his grandmother, which is the April birth stone, the month we got married. Those stones had sat in the safety deposit box for many years. One is still there. But we waited to use them when the occasion seemed to call for it. DD looked beautiful on her wedding day with her great, great uncle's diamond hanging from a slender chain around her neck to match the earrings her groom gave her.

Since I like jewelry and I wear it daily, I would have it reset into something I like and wear it. I currently wear my late MIL's set on my left hand pinkie finger, along wit ha mothers ring my kids gave me years ago. They're all very small stones, so together the rings aren't overwhelming. On my right hand I wear my Dad's diamond ring. I never take my rings off. Mom will leave me her original stone she had remade into a pendant after Dad died. She also had a cocktail ring made up from the other stones that is going to my sister (total carat weight on each is the same, but I get the solitaire). I don't know what I'll do with that, since I seldom wear one necklace, and I can't really combine that one with my funky costume jewelry. I plan to give any of the rings her current husband gave her to his daughters-they have no meaning to me or my children. My eldest DD received her husband's grandmothers ring as her engagement ring. It's a lovely vintage ring, the stones are on the small side (no more than 1/3 carat each) but it's a beautiful setting and perfect for them. The trend seems to be big, ostentatious stones these days, with young people really going in to debt for subpar stones. My other DD's in-laws are jewelers, and he gave her a sizeable stone in a current style setting-but it cost them only a few hundred, versus what it would have cost retail. So I like the idea of passing on a ring you don't want or can use to a young couple who could really use it. My son will get his Grandpa's ring to use the stone for when he finally decides to marry the girl he's with (that we're all anxious he'd give her a ring already!!)

The door is always open Gill, if you ever make it this way. Same for all my friends here. I understand your fascination with them Gill. I enjoy them with or without leaves. They are so majestic. I find myself looking over the plants in my covered area, viewing all of them and thinking. "I love the leaves on this one", "man are they ever growing", "wow, I just love all of them together and seeing all their differences", then it comes over me and I think. "Good thing no one can hear me, they would think I had lost it". I will say it again. I wish I could share some of my young plants with everyone hear. Always more than I need, but it is not possible without a lot of red tape and cost. Rick

You need to decide what you want....glitz or a flawless diamond? One that looks flashy, or one that is internally perfect.
To get the biggest good looking stone for the least money, I prefer a great color...at least G or F and can easily tolerate si quality if the inclusion is a white "feather" and is below the girdle of the stone.
You should decide on how much you have to spend and then go shopping.....and realize that diamonds have a HUGE mark up.....so because one store offers a similar diamond for less, doesn't mean that it is a lesser quality....just that their mark up is not as great.
So decide what you can spend and go looking, know the "Three C's" of each stone you look at and then you can better compare.

I don't have a copy - it's been about 15 years. I mean I analyze anything I buy - I'm nerdy that way. I research and get educated - and diamonds are something you definitely should educate yourself about before buying or you may end up spending thousands too much. Also, my mom managed a local jewelry store for 20 years before she retired.

Anything over 1/4 carat:

If you are thinking of going to a local diamond/jewelry district - you will get ripped off if you don't know what you're doing.

If you are shopping retail like at Zales or another big chain - ditto.

After educating yourself and narrowing down what you want, I would go to a local jeweler who has been around for awhile and buy a loose stone independent of the setting, and have the stone set while you watch. Many stone's inclusions are cleverly hidden in the prongs of a setting.

Or if you have a Costco nearby - they have excellent values on jewelry, including diamonds, and even give a money-back guarantee and a price guarantee.

If you are spending any large amount, get a GIA certified stone.

If all this scares you off, try cubic zirconia set in gold - they are fantastic quality and you won't be afraid to wear it. QVC sells a good line.

My husband and I got married when we were very young, so my dimond was very little it almost looks like a chip, so when I got older had kids etc, he asked me if I wanted a bigger dimond up grade, I said no, the ring you got me reminds me of where we were when we first were together, I wear it often, but I did go to Macys and got a cubic Zirconia set in white gold and it is about 1 carret and I love it and everyone always compliments, I dont think most people can even tell and I dont say a word. LOL
