36" Gas cooktop ok in laminate?

From a functional perspective, is there any reason a 36" gas cooktop (Bosch) couldn't be used with a laminate countertop? Our current 30" electric cooktop sits on laminate, but I imagine our larger, gas cooktop could generate more heat. Our appliances and cabinets are in the garage, awaiting installation in the coming weeks, and we are going round and round about countertop material, from granite, to Corian, to laminate and back round again. I honestly like the forgiving nature of laminate (with kids and glasses and being able to replace in 5 years if we tire of it or wear it out), and am swinging back in this direction but had this question about the cooktop. I know it's not a high status product, but I'm ok with that as my priority is the function of my kitchen.

We put laminate on our counters, formica 180fx and have a gas, glass cooktop. There is no heat generated or very little as far as I can tell. We did the formica a few months ago as a temporary fix while we decide how we want the layout.

I have been really pleasantly surprised by the formica. Our last house was solid surface counters and I am not really missing them. We did the formica ourselves, bought the sheets from lowes and the contact cement for it. We sanded the formica that was on there from 1956 to rough it up and then glued the new formica on top. Only took a few hours.

The issues will be if you bought a 36" base for the 36" top, and whether or not you're talking about doing a laminate with an integral backsplash, and if you have a good vent with sufficient CFM. If you bought the right size base, and are doing a flat deck countertop with a tile backsplash and at least 400 CFM for a consumer grade top, there's likely to be few issues. The integral bacsksplash on laminate can become damaged from high heat cooking and having that heat build up because it's not being exhausted will lead to a visible scorch mark. If you have a pro style cooktop, you will need much more venting also.

I appreciate all the replies on this thread. I liked the Viking 'designer' line gas cooktop, but it's performance specs are not as good as DCS or Monogram. Oddly the specs on their "professional" cooktop weren't any better. I want power and simmer. The dual burners on the DCS and Monogram seem to offer that the best. Also their burners have cast brass instead of steel. Even the pricey Thermador doesn't use brass, and it 'clicks' the burner on and off to maintain a simmer. So now it's down to choosing DCS or Monogram based on their layout, reliability and customer service. This is where I really reply on the postings here. I'll take some of my big pots to the good store next week and verify I can use them with both. I'm going to have double ovens installed next to the cooktop. I want big drawers beneath it. I'm planning on the Electrolux (not ICON) ovens because they have the best mix of features I really want, and I like its styling better than Monogram. I also looked at Viking "Designer" ovens and a Bosch. I really like them for their looks and using knobs instead of an electronic interface. They have the features and power that I want, but I'm too concerned about reliability. I haven't heard ANY complaints from the owners of Electrolux ovens! So I chose better reliability over knobs. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm still in "planning" phase with my remodel. Tear out begins in a week. It will be about 8 weeks (I hope) before I installed mew equipment and test it out.

Ok this question will certainly show my loack of knowledge but here goes: the current hood that is mounted under the cabinet does not have any kind of duct going into the cabinet above. The cooktop and hood are on the wall between the kitchen and the family room. I never gave it much thought but I guess I thought it had to vent to the outside somehow? Now that I'm looking to buy a new one I want to understand what I should be buying!

“does anyone, know if you can install a wall oven under the Wolf cooktop?” @susanrhill34 - there are issues with installing a wall oven under a cooktop. First, there is a clearance issue. You must make certain to abide by the clearance specified for below the cooktop, and the clearance specified for above the wall oven. There often is not enough room for both, so you’d have to find another combination of cooktop and wall oven where there would be enough clearance for both. Second, the wall oven installed under a cooktop will be so low to the ground that when the oven door is open, it is nearly touching the ground, and that low height is awkward and cumbersome for taking things out of the oven that are boiling hot, heavy, and/or sloshing. Third, you would be better served with buying a range. A range would cost thousands less than a cooktop with wall oven underneath including the challenges of installing them.

The upward velocity of induction cooking plumes can be lower than with gas cooking due to the gas combustion products aiding the gas cooking plume. This potentially reduces the needed CFM/sq.ft. for containment. (Not applicable to unintended flambes.) However, the expansion angle of the plumes that drive hood overlap may not decrease much. (I don't have time to look up the relevant paper at the moment, but will get back to the subject this evening, if possible.) Upping the CFM above that normally needed will slightly increase the effective capture aperture, and may be sufficient. If only low heat frying is intended, then that may help.

We currently have a gas cooktop in a laminate countertop.

The only problem that I had was that my large BTU burners are in the back left and front right positions. I was using a large stockpot that had to overhang the grates and I didn't pay attention on the back side (I was using the back large BTU) and my laminate countertop ended up getting burned. It wasn't a big deal at the time because I knew that we were getting ready to remodel.

Therefore, when looking at cooktops, pay attention to things such as knob location (which prevented me from using the front large BTU burner) and the size of the grates. After this incident and visiting a showroom with my husband, we determined that it was worth it to us to get a rangetop for our remodel since we use large skillets and pots frequently.
