Apples past their prime - what can I do with them?

Hey all -

I have several (like 8) apples that got left on the counter while we were gone for a week. They aren't squishy, but they have started to wrinkle a little. THe kids wont eat them in that condition, is there something I can do with them or should I just toss them?

applesauce, apple pie, or this:
Apple Cake

4 cups chopped apples
1 Â½ cups sugar
Â½ cup raisins ( I use chopped other fruit like dried peaches or apricots)
Mix and let sit for about an hour ( less is OK)
2 cups flour
1 Â½ tsps baking soda ( I like Â¾ tsps soda and Â¾ tsps BP)
Â¾ tsps salt
1T cinnamon Â¼ tsp nutmeg
Mix dry ingredients
2 eggs
Â¾ cups veggie oil
1 tsp vanilla
beat together
1 cup chopped pecans if desired.
Add the oil and eggs to the apples and sugar and dried fruit. Stir in the dry mixture and add nuts if desires.
Pour into greased 9 by 13 pan and bake 350 until doneÂ..40 to 50 minutes.
Serve with cake gravy!

Cake Gravy
Mix 1 cup sugar
1 stick butter
Â½ cup evap milk
1 tsp vanillaÂ.
Mix all and cook all in a sauce pan for about 3 minutes.
Serve warm over the cake.

Apple crisp or apple maple jam or a small batch of apple butter, or fried apples to go with biscuits for breakfast, or apple muffins or...well, you get the idea.

Hard to say from the unknown size of the tree how much 1.5" is but going by my 3 year old trees I would say it will be fine on its own. I think even my 3 year old dwarf tree could deal with 1.5". But that would be enough to plan on replacing my 2 year old dwarf grafts. My roommate is good about weed eating trees to death. It's only a whack here and there (except for the new tree that he debarked clear around once), but a little bit every week for 6 months adds up. It took a lot of yelling to get him to stop weed eating the trees at all.

I am growing Sugar Snap Peas but the package says that if I want snow peas to pick them at the snow pea stage before they get plumped up. If I leave them on the vine, then they get big and fat. They're really good because they're juicy and crunchy.

The problem is I bought 2 for 1 Kilz when they had a sale at a big box store. So I'm stuck with those and I'd prefer using it instead of buying something else. How if I put it up with rollers instead of brushes. Now I feel bad because I bought a couple of cheap brushes that I can't return I guess, but better I should give them away instead of picking strings off the wet walls.

Yes, pen and ink. Nice idea, Sherry, but not possible as the artist moved away a long time ago. I like the climbing rose idea too. I once had a rose addiction--Austins, Bucks, and hardy shrubs and climbers--but had to get practical and give them up, along with most of my perennials. I don't suppose it would hurt to get just one teensy (haha) rambler....

Whiz them in the FP with a little juice or water and vanilla.
Use in place of the liquid in pancakes. Add a little cinnamon and brown sugar. Then serve with maple syrup.

Or any of the ideas above! Mine would end up in muffins or cake because I hate trying to peel the wrinkly ones!!

Savory: curry dishes. Substitute them for the cauliflower in your cauliflower mashed potato recipe.

How about Waldorf Salad! It's very quick and easy, has good things in it.

1. Cut a few apples into bite-size chunks (just core them; no need to peel)
2. Sprinkle with a little lemon juice
3. Chop one or two stalks celery, add to apples
4. Add a handful of raisins, another handful of walnuts
5. Finally, add mayonnaise or lite mayo and stir everything together. I can't say how much mayo, but enough to bind the ingredients together.

Chill for a while, serve as salad before dinner or with dinner on the plate for a little something sweet, or as between meal snacks.

It keeps for days in the fridge. My kids always loved it, now my gkids do!

I can vouch for LindaC's cake gravy. Delish!

Thanks everyone!

I have always tossed a single apple that got wrinkly, but with 8 of them I was hoping there was something I could do. Great ideas all!

Linda's apple cake is delish even without the cake gravy. I usually don't peel apples when I use them in baking likes coffeecakes. I do for pies though. If you have a juicer, apple juice for one or two is not a lot of work.

I think "pruney" apples always are better peeled!

When I was a kid we always called them "Granny apples", but "pruney" fits too. LOL!
