Tricks my Mother played on us

My Mom was a genius when it came to getting us kids, who were picky eaters, to eat the home cooked meals she put in front of us. As an example, she was big on oatmeal for breakfast in the winter months. At the time the Quaker Oat company had a companion product called Mother's Oats. They had bought the company decades earlier; it came in a cylindrical cardboard box with a picture of a woman seated at a table with a bowl of oats in front of her. Off to the side stood her young son and she was giving him a spoonful. Well, one day she went shopping and they were out of Mother's Oats, so she bought Quaker Oats. Now, I believe they were phasing out Mother's because the print ads of the day often showed both products with the caption 'Quaker Oats and Mother's Oats are exactly the same'. That didn't mean anything to us kids; we just didn't like the looks of that smiling Quaker on the box. So, while we were at school Mom simply poured the Quaker into the Mother's box. Problem solved!

Her tricks weren't limited to food either. My Dad always had a bit of a weight problem. He was also short - for many years he wore a size 38" waist and 29" inseam; hard to find. As he got older the 38"s got tight on him but if Mom got him 40s and later 42s he would return them to the store and get 38s which he could not wear, so they ended up in the drawer. Mom ended up sewing old 38 labels into the larger sizes and he never suspected a thing!
