I need to find WHERE to put the dang CD in my pc :o(

I know it is one of those 2 drawers in the front that come out with the push of a button, but never know for sure just which one it is. Maybe once I find out, I should label it...huh?

Sue...oh so challenged

Gonna bump this back up.

Try this site.

Here is a link that might be useful: Backup made easy

C > Documents and Settings > Your Name (hubby's name?) > Favorites folder. You should be able to put the whole folder on CD. Click on it one time and then follow the instructions of your burning program to include it, like all other files, onto the CD.

Is that what you needed?

C > Documents and Settings

c=Computer?
c=control panel?

I don't know where to go to this documents and Settings

Do you know where windows explorer is?

Once you find it, using

start
all programs
accesories
window explorer, click

now, go to my computer (or if you have a fast access to "my computer" use it!

c:

documents and settings! :)

I put my "favorites" and my email addres book from Outlook Express on one of the USB drives. It is so simple - and and easy way to backup! You can re-use these over and over so when you have new favorites and address or once a month, twice a year, whatever....just put the new ones on.

And if you need them - it is SUPER easy to "import" them back in. Either on your computer or a new one.

Look under FILE for Import/Export and just follow the wizard.

For someone who knows very little about a computer and where to find files, programs, etc. I would ask someone to give us a pre-school tutorial ie a,b,c, etal.

Can someone please do that for us? Thanks

kayjones,
Computer drives are called by letters. If your computer has a floppy drive, it will be A. Back when we had two floppies in most computers they were A and B.

Usually the main drive with the operating system is drive C, referred to as C: or C> or C:> - all those harken back to DOS days when you had to type it in for the computer to know what you were talking about.

After that if your computer has more than one drive, they will be letters D and up. This includes CDROMs, CDRWs, DVDROMs or DVDRWs. Computer hard drives can be paritioned so they look like more drives, just to keep life interesting. ;-)

There are various conventions for the lettering of the drives, depending on type of drive, partitions and types of partitions, none of which are really important.

I used to use one convention for my CDROM and CDRW that helped keep stuff straight - I would name the CDROM (Read Only) as R and the CDRW (read and Write) as W. It made it easier to keep them straight. Now I am too lazy and have to keep track. If I put a blank CD in the wrong drive, my CD burning program will open the CD writer and ask me to put blank in it - that makes it much easier, LOL!

Physically, I always put the read only on the top and the writer below it. 8-D

On your computer......

Start button > Run > type in the word explorer

What opens is your tree. Look or Scroll down to My Computer and click on that.

Now you will see your drive letters.....
A (your floppy if you have one)
C (your hard drive)
D (your CD or DVD drive)

You probably see a bunch of other stuff, but don't worry about those.

Click on C and it will open to everything on your hard drive in a-b-c order. Click on Documents and Settings. Click on your name. Click on Favorites. You are now in your Favorites folder.

But initially, I wrote for Susan, who is backing up her Favorites to disk. She will not need to go to the Start button because she has to access the Favorites folder from her CD/DVD burner program. If you are backing up also, you will access by the same steps - that is without going through the Start button, without going through Accessories, and without going through Explorer.

I need to know what the rest of you are trying to do in order to direct you.

Also, the instructions are written for WindowsXP. If you are running Windows98 or other operating system, please inform. The directions will be different.

Woodswell, I'm not offering screenshots because I have 3 hard drives. It will only cause confusion to show or talk about what they don't have and what doesn't exist.

Each puter is different. I will try to give directions for Internet Explorer and XP.

In Internet Explorer, (the page you are looking at now)
go to File (on your toolbar...you may have to click your alt key)-->Import and Export.
This will open the Import/Export wizard, then EXPORT FAVORITES

Next screen should highlight your Favorites

Next will ask where you want to export them to. Click BROWSE. At the very top, you should have the drop down, find DESKTOP, click on that. It will automatically be named BOOKMARK, click save.

Now from your desktop. Right click on that file BOOKMARK, then send to. Send wherever you your burner is....OR, your flashdrive is.

I hope this helps...it is hard to give general directions because of all the different puters!

Hi, The only thing on my computer important enough are family photos. I back them up on CDs by quarters and take them to DS's house. They're also backed up here on an external hard drive, in another room. I keep a cd with any video on it and DS gets a copy.

Here's a website that costs $50 per year and backs up everything on your computer all the time, no matter how much you have. I heard about this on Leo LePort's computer show. Considering how much all the other back up devices can cost, this seems like a pretty good deal, and you don't have to do anything. Everything is automatically backed up as soon as it's on your computer.

Email is a good way to back up things, since it's not stored on your computer, but on a server somewhere else. Most free emails have a lot of storage these days and you can retrieve them from any computer. Sign up for a couple of different emails. Just email the info to yourself or save the drafts.

When people lose their homes, most have the same story. Photos were backed up, but the back ups burnt with the computer, or were stolen along with the computer, etc. With so many pics on our computers that don't get printed any more, backing them up should be a priority. Linda
