I was looking for a zip code today and found this site.

Holy cow! We live in the country, but I never knew so much about our closest town!

Interesting site--but I'd take their info with a grain of salt. First town I looked up? They claimed there were no sexual offenders living in that town. When I cross-checked with the state Megan's Law list, there were THREE PAGES of sexual offenders in that town (some offenders had multiple names, so that meant more entries than actual offenders, but there were still a lot of them).

Thank you. I don't remember asking anyone to pass a wet blanket, but I'll take it.

...and despite the fact that I have been swamped with work like I posted yesterday, we are one step closer to the real reason I haven't been at the KT lately...

New homes (like ours 22 years ago and probably yours) are generally leveled and graded with the subsoil extracted from digging out the basement hole. The topsoil is stripped and if any soil has to be added for final grading (i.e., even after spreading the basement subsoil), it is not topsoil generally. This "grading" soil is usually very rich soil but devoid of organic matter. And, as you now know, organic matter is needed to get this soil "alive". You just have to add MASSIVE amounts of organic matter to make it friable. Every year, I mulch mow a HUGE amount of autumn leaves all around the yard and garden. It is something you have to do every year (i.e, adding organic matter). Raised beds are good for veggies and flowers but you can amend strips of the existing soil by adding massive amounts of organic matter and digging it in. (You'll have to make the raised beds out of purchased topsoil, Canadian peat and compost, etc., to get them "ready to use" immediately. I'd keep the compost in the new raised beds at about 10 percent IMHO.) Now is an absolutely perfect time to do this. Go around your area and see if you can find any curbside leaf bags and dig those into flower or veggie growing areas you want in the future and/or mulch mow them EVERYWHERE. Now is the time to do this and I recommend you do this on a MASSIVE scale. You'll have to run the mower over the thick layer of leaves 3 to 4 times to get it real small. Over time you will see dramatic results IMHO. All this organic material addition/amending is alot of work but it is great exercise and very rewarding IMHO. Good luck!! Tidbit: I talked to Dr. Elaine Ingram (she's an expert on soils) a few years back asking about the typical suburban soil around new homes and she basically said: "You probably can't add enough organic matter in your lifetime to make the soil 'too organic'." What she was really saying was "have at it" and don't worry about mulching massive amounts of organic matter onto the soil. Compost, shredded leaves, mulched grass clippings, wood chips, etc. Dr. Ingram isn't big on digging stuff into the soil but she said for new suburban soils this is fine to get things "started". She also said autumn leaves are great organic material.

It really isn't necessary to test your soil every year, I think the recommendation is about every five years. Compost is one of the best things you can do for your soil. You need to be careful adding sand to clay, you can end up with bricks. You can build raised beds, or berms if drainage is a problem.Leaf mold, compost, peat moss....any organic material will be helpful. I am mainly organic but do not rule out synthetic chemicals in some cases. You may want to research IPM (integrated pest management). An excellent book is "The Truth About Organic Gardening" by Jeff Gilman. He talks about and compares synthetic and natural chemicals and their eco impact. If you haven't had a soil test done, it would be a good idea. Also, instead of trying to change your conditions to meet plant needs you may want to choose plants suited to your conditions. Many many things are done without permits within the city of Philadelphia, and to my knowledge it never comes back on anyone at the time of sale. The house I bought had an un-permitted bathroom that was completely new (which I removed), and an existing bath and kitchen renovation which were un-permitted (Bathroom replaced, kitchen to be replaced). When I was getting inspections for new plumbing work for an entirely new bathroom in the basement and when I had permits for the roof, I asked the inspector if most people got permits for remodels of existing baths and kitchens and she said No, most people don't, and they aren't so worried about kitchens and baths that are replacing existing, they are more worried about people making structural changes without permits, which apparently happens a lot, too. It's a fairly lax system compared to many locales. To be honest I have not gotten permits for every single thing I've done. but all my work is done by people who do More than required to meet code, not less.

@David Van Arnum, I hope your question isn't how much work needs to be done to any house by looking at the photos. You can't tell how extensive or expensive the repairs will be by looking at a photo. For whichever home you decide to purchase, to get a good idea of condition you need to have a very thorough inspection by a well qualified inspector. This way you will get the actual condition of the property as of the inspection date. I'm a Realtor and sometimes you can tell from the photos that X needs to be done but you can't see the details from the photos. Plus, there are some people that put in old pics in the MLS and that is what uploads to Zillow. There have been times I've had to do a double take when arriving at the property because it doesn't look anything like the posted pics in the MLS. My advice to you is to not believe any photos - and get the third party independent inspection for whichever home you choose. Get the good inspector, not the one that gives a pass to everything. You want to know what you are going to face before you close. You want to know during the inspection period so you can cancel the purchase if the house requires too much work.

You know that leaves the door wide open for alisande to propose some outlandish scenario where you're folicking with polar bears and whipping up moose chip ice cream in the wilds of Alaska. Or perhaps one of those cute little game warden fellows is showing you the intricacies of fly fishing in the Denali.

OK - how long will you tease us before we find out the real reason?

That's what I meant.

They know more about us than we realize.

When surveys that I take ask for my birthdate... no, thanks ... they don't need it. That's one of the major pieces of information that the identity thieves want.

Not suggesting that the professional survey company would pass on my information ...

... but the more skilled identity thieves make piles of money ...

... and there's nothing to stop one of them passing on a substantial amount to one of the employees of the survey company who might be able to provide significant information, shall we say, informally.

You've heard that two heads are better than one? Some folks figure that two paycheques are preferable to one, developed at the same workplace.

I've told the survey people that I have three options:

1. to give them the actual date - which I'm not going to do, or
2. to give them a false date, or
3. leave.

I've asked which of the latter that they prefer that I do.

No answer, thus far.

I use the forums at city-data.com. Texas, for example, is broken down into forums for the Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio and Austin areas.

After the states, there are many other forums: religion, tv, crafts, etc. Look around, there's a lot there.
