Have you seen "The Kids Are All Right"? The movie is great, one of my favorites of the year. And the kitchen is the perfect blend of gorgeous and homey-cozy.

I am linking a thread about the decor in the movie you mentioned, "It's Complicated". There are multiple links within that thread about the decor that are very interesting. I have to say though, that the kitchen, while it looked great on film, I couldn't live with. I think that can happen sometimes with film or magazine kitchens - nice to look at, but the reality might not be so easy to work in, live in, cook in. The It's Complicated kitchen had too much clutter for my taste, and not much true workspace--maybe that's why there was the plotline of Meryl needing to re-do it!

Looks like we'll have to wait for Nancy Meyer's next movie.

I LOVE that movie!!! There was more of Alec Baldwin than I ever hoped to see, however...

The garden is WONderful. I was only disappointed we didn't get to see the new kitchen! She was obviously looking for workspace and a separated space...as I would if I had that one. It has some very cool features (the shelf built into the wall and the dish cabinet), but the kind of clutter that would make me angry. The bakery was GREAT.

Practical Magic...while the Victorian house is not exactly my style (too big and dark) I love the gardens, the kitchen, the pantry and the conservatory...not to mention the side porch and pergola.

I think the pantry is one reason I wanted such a large one, in my remodel!

Just wanted to second the vote for the house in "The Kids Are Alright".....Loved that kitchen, the whole house-loved that it wasn't huge, either.

Haven't seen any of these movies, sigh. Have been looking at the two kitchens illustrated above--they mystify me a bit. Am curious as to why they are "good kitchens" in your opinions. Is it the colors? The overall lightness of the many components? the style of the cabinets? Something else?

I loved the It's Complicated house as well. The whole time they were talking of a kitchen remodel I was thinking I would take that one even if it is not practical. I also loved her bed and bath. I now find myself loving movie kitchens that have older elements in them and that are not so put together. Like old appliances or older flooring, etc. I find that they feel comforting and like a lot of love has gathered in those spaces. The kitchen in "The Family Stone" is an example. Another movie kitchen and house I love is the primary residence on "Spanglish". I didn't get to see much of "The Kids Are Alright" as I had little ones staring up at the TV in the first few seens so it had to be removed and have yet to finish it! I would love to have a movie set designer do my house. A couple of other websites for movie houses is homeshoothome.com. These are real houses marketed for movie filming. The houses from "Step Brothers" and "The Hangover" are on this site. iamnotastalker.com has some good movie house info. There is also one more site with malibu in the title that also involves real homes being marketed for film, but I can't remember the name right now.

The house that I've totally fallen in love with is the Schaffer House that was featured in 'A Single Man.' (John Lautner, architect (1949); Tom Ford,director (2009). Boy oh boy! As much as I adore old NYC townhouses and period kitchens with white cabinets, all it would take for me to change course would be a generous lottery win. In that case, I could easily pull up my roots and relocate to Glendale, Ca and the foot of the Verdugo mountains for that MCM redwood house, with its serious wood kitchen in a heartbeat!! (Last year, that 2br beauty was on the market for a paltry 1.5M).) :-) Although I'm not so much impressed with the kitchen photos from the house that I've seen online, I can clearly remember drooling through that movie at every scene of the Schaffer House (and Julianne Moore's MCM house as well) and lusting after that kitchen! Sigh.

My favorite recent kitchen was in the movie, Inception. Though I have searched and searched I cannot find any pictures of it. I did find out that it was filmed in the Freeman-Ford house by Greene & Greene. (No wonder I loved the house!) However, while the kitchen was built in the Greene & Greene style, it was definitely more modern, so it probably was a set.
