Contact paper/wallpaper in kitchen cabinets (:((

I"m getting ready to have my cabinets painted, including interiors. Some of the drawers and a couple of the cabinets have either contact paper or wallpaper stuck/glued to the bottom. I have peeled and scraped what I can. I haven't used anything wet for fear of harming the wood. Any hints on how to get the rest of it up? If it absolutely won't come up, what do I have them "prime" with so the paper doesn't come up/peel away from the moisture in the paint?

If it's contact paper, try covering it with a dish towel & 'iron' over it with a warm iron. Or use a blow dryer.

As ci_lantro suggested, using a blow dryer to soften the paper worked for me. Then, I used Passo, a liquid sanding product, to remove the sticky residue. Goof-Off might remove the residue, too.

You can easily put fabric on the backs of the cabs with starch. The fabric sticks really well, but peels off easily when you're ready for a change. A wet sponge and you're back to just white. A lightweight fabric will stick with just spray starch. A heavier one will need to be dipped in liquid starch then gently squeezed out. A heavier fabric will need you to hang onto it or brace it until it starts to dry. A light weight one is pretty much good to go as soon as you put it on the surface you're sticking it to. I covered one of DS1's walls with felt when he was little. It was a hills, mountains, etc. scene which was ever changing because we used it as a giant felt board. You can find really fun fabrics in the red tag section at JoAnn's or other fabric stores for $1-$2/yd and starch costs next to nothing.

I have not been on this forum for a long time but I had to comment. I just finished taking down a powder room full of wallpaper. I wanted to comment on a product called Gardz, it is made by Zinsser (sp?) It is wonderful for helping fix dry wall. If you get the paper down and have places that need mud and sanding, put this product on the spots before mudding. It seals everything, then mud, sand, and cover the spots again with Gardz. I just totally rolled the whole room with it. It is oil based, so I just threw the roller away. It is thin and milky looking and a little goes a long way. It really helps prepare your walls for paint or wallpaper. When I took down a whole foyer of wallpaper, the walls were so damaged that I had a drywaller skim coat them again. The painter I hired asked what I put on the walls, I told him that I rolled them with Gardz to prepare the new drywall and he said he really likes the product. No I do not sell this product, it is actually hard to find, just trying to help a fellow person taking down that dreaded wallpaper!

Thanks! I primed the ends of the kitchen cupboards. Then I papered it. It hung beautifully and painted like a dream. Here is the source for the paper. A roll did 3 sides of my island, my tall cupboard with built in microwave and and one upper cabinet. They had a cheaper paper, but the ridges weren't as nice, so I sprang for the $5 extra. I have covered a ton of wood and mdf with contact paper. It is about as thin as 3 sheets of paper stacked together but it does not really tear because it is made out of some sort of vinyl or plastic I assume. Not paper. It does not appear thin and it isnt see through, at least not the contact paper that I have used. I think it would work fine for your application. ETA - This photo shows a ton of 2x4's, mdf, and book shelves covered in cheap contact paper. If you look at the end of the bed, the striped piece is all white melamine bookshelves covered in 3 different colors of contact paper cut into strips. This is what $6 contact paper looks like. I like the contact paper but I think Penny has a great suggestion with the Rub N Buff also.

Also, try scoring it and using liquid fabric softener sponged on.

This might be terrible advice so I apologize in advance.
I would use Googone.
I love this stuff.
Googone takes off stickers, wall paper, labels, gum,
grease, pine pitch (yes, Pine pitch on your lawn
furniture), tape, blood, bumper stickers, melted crayon,
caked on playdo, ... the possibilities are endless.

Now, if it could work on erasing my crows feet I would
be in business.

Thank you all!!. . . the hair dryer is working like a dream and I think the Goo Gone is getting up the residual sticky stuff. I've already done three drawers in about 20 minutes!! I have a question about prep for painting, but will post that separately. Again. . .thank you!!
