Terrible Two-some Get-Together: EJ & Terri

I just got back from the Pacific Northwest....and didn't get to spend near enough time with our own, growing in visiting popularity, and my swap partner, terri_pacnw! (You know you're card carrying certifiable when you plan your vacations around what CF members you can visit and not drive your family crazy).

This past Friday, I followed on Ellen's heels and got to hang with Terri. Between our ferry being late and our GPS taking us the wrong way, we lost about an hour of play time. I was REALLY hoping to help her do some canning but all I got to do was wash and cut up some beets! We recognized each other immediately and like all forum get togethers, it was as if we were old friends who hadn't missed a beat (or beet....).

We talked food, family, forum and the time FLEW! I miss you already, gee I guess I'll have to come back up to spend some more time and get some real work done. Your island is BEAUTIFUL and I'm jealous of all the summer bounty! I got to meet her DH and two of her kids, and her Australian Shepherd.

Awe thanks Jessica! It was great to have you hang out. No worries on the canning..I still need to get those beans done though.

Folks, This may be one of those situations where images on a website cannot do justice to the physical tone of being in the room. I recognize that looking at the pictures on the website make all of my choices look like a motley collection of clowns. And then there is my sweeby mission statement about "cool" kitchens that I still stand by. To explain this in the context of my kitchen, let me share how it feels to be in the kitchen. Our home is in northern California near San Francisco which is quite a bit different from general image of sunny LA or San Diego. It is said that Mark Twain once said that "the coldest winter I have ever spent was a summer in San Francisco". The marine influence here means that it is common to have 70 to 75 degrees in middle of summer. When the east coast was broiling this summer, we had 68-72 degree days. Then there is my house which is adobe.. This means the super thick bricks have to warm up first before the air inside the house begins to warm up.. It is usually a good 10 degrees cooler inside than outside. We in fact put in heated floors just for this reason. Then there is quality of light.. The banquette on the end of the galley is east facing but quite heavily shaded and the light is filtered and cool. The side of the galley with the doors and windows that opens to the courtyard is south facing but has a very deep eaves (around 7 ft) so the light here is very filtered as well. The only bright light source is the two new skylights. It is hard to show the quality of light with photos taken with my iPad. Then my "clown" choices... If I use light colors in the room, they do not actually lighten the room.. They just seem pale and flat. But stronger, brighter colors almost seem to glow and IMHO do not look garish or loud but rather brighten the space. If look at colors used in regions of the world where brick and clay is used for construction, they also use stronger hues and multiple colors..like encaustic moorish tiles and bright colorful Mexican kitchens.. I feel that if the stage is cleared for one prima donna clown (a la the hood) and the rest sort of disappears in a forgettable background chorus.. the. end resut is very lopsided. Having a few strong elements I think balances and makes the end result better.. The trick here is whether they are harmonious or competing. I am striving for harmony but with stronger colors.. I know color is a very very personal choice and I am not defending my choices but rather I felt I should contribute to this dialogue on color in the context of my darker kitchen with very filtered light. Many of the lovely kitchens here are blessed with lovely counter height windows and bright sunlight.. But a kitchen like mine is different and brighter colors may be an appropriate palette.. Anyways.. Just want to share my thinking ..

I've never been married. I'm 56 now, so I realize it's not going to be easy to find a partner. I dropped out of college in 1980 to take care of my grandmother who helped raise me. Then I became the caregiver for three other relatives in succession, the last was my father, so I didn't get out enough to meet many single men. I got back from Cache Creek casino sooner than expected. One of my cousins wasn't feeling well so we had to come home early. Now that I'm home, I'm feeling depressed, partly because I lost money, and didn't have time to win it back, but mostly because I miss my dad. I thought of how much more fun the trip would have been if he were with me. I remembered the time when we gambled all night together in Reno, when we both were much younger. We arrived home exhausted but happy. I wish we could have had more fun times like that. I thought about my dad on the long ride home and how the world seems so empty without him, even though there were crowds of people in the casino and on the roads and freeways. It's hard to believe I"ll ever feel better, but I know I'm feeling extra weary from lack of sleep. I couldn't sleep well last night, because I was crying so much, more than before. It's a different kind of exhaustion than the kind you get from having fun. I know that no one can take my dad's place, but it would be nice to have someone here to talk over the trip with and to just watch tv with at the end of the day. I love Arhaus and would shop with them, but they don’t do in store pick up and the shipping to my area is just not worth it. Got ready to purchase a bed and the cost to get it to me was $300. I’m going to need 3 stools and most everything comes in pairs or outside that practical cost zone for me. May end up with an additional stool. I’m telling you it is a real struggle to get anything besides the same ole boring and tradition decor and furnishings in that area. I agree with you about the chairs, but they are really good quality and finding something to replace them around here or without paying shipping cost is my same old song and dance. Fabric and an upholster I can get. Plus if I don’t use the stuff, there’s that “What am I going to do with it”? Nobody will pay me anything for it, and I already have a storage building with stuffed full, so I might as well use it. I’m getting to old for this, but I will get it done sooner or most likely later. I’ll send you a photo when it’s hung. And that will take weeks. Have a good evening. Thanks!

What fun! Terri certainly wins this summer's popularity contest. She was my swappie too, once, and I still treasure the apron she sewed.

One day I will get to the Pacific NW and come knocking on your door, Terri.

I have family in CA but they refuse to cooperate when I want to visit with people. They are all alpha-males. It's not a pretty sight.

One day I will arrive out there ahead of schedule and hopefully see all you CA CFers in the flesh and blood. SOn is in Ventura and brother is in La Jolla, so there must be a few of you in between!

Awww, Terri...too bad you couldn't keep her longer and had a mini canny camp. Canning season is a nice time to have grunt....er....visitors drop in.
