~What's the big deal about 'Big Brother'

I've watched the first two episodes of Big Brother and I have to admit: I don't get it. But then, I don't get Survivor either.

The writer's strike might have something with BB's (lack of) quality but are all the series so, well....tacky?

I don't understand the stategy they keep talking about.

Do they mean the lying?

Do all series have a couple like the 'real life couple' who are pretending not to be a real life couple?

Far far too bizarre for me folks.

Winters nights are long around here but not long enough to compel me to want to watch it again......

I think you'd have to watch a whole season to understand the addiction . . . these people are in the house for 3 months - no contact whatsoever with anybody else, no TV, no newspapers, etc. After a short time, they completely forget there are cameras everywhere and it gets pretty ugly. You see them as their raw, unguarded selves. One of the first seasons showed a vengeful girl using another houseguest's toothbrush to scrub out a toilet . . . then putting it back into the toothbrush holder. There are no "normal" people here . . . they are all drama kings and queens who are completely narcissistic. It's just an opportunity to be a voyeur into the world of the 'I can't believe there are people who would do that stuff' kind of thing . . . hey, we have long, boring winters up here :)

The 'strategy' revolves around keeping yourself aligned with a group so you have power in numbers when it comes to voting people out. This year they threw a monkeywrench into that area, because they are being voted out in teams of two - so whether or not one person in the team is liked or innocent (of whatever), they both go. The power in the house is constantly shifting; someone may be king of the world one week, and the bottom of the totem pole the next week.

The first seasons didn't have people who knew each other . . . but in order to change/spice things up, the last few seasons started doing that. The BB motto is "expect the unexpected" so unlike Survivor, where things are always pretty much the same every year with different faces, BB shakes things up a lot. Also, by having it on 2 to 3 times a week, you REALLY get to know the houseguests . . . the good, the bad and the ugly :)

They also have an uncensored version of the house on Showtime on late night. I can't stay up for much of it, but it's always stuff they could never show on primetime. This bunch has been wild as all getout at night . . . my 21 yr. old DD watches with me and I made her promise she'll NEVER EVER try out for this show . . . her poor old mother couldn't take watching her baby in a mess like that . . .

Was Big Brother on yesterday(wednesday)? What did i miss? Did they keep the nut job and that poor blonde guy she kept insulting? HELP!

Since you're located in Washington, a two-minute turnover may not be necessary. I don't know what your weather conditions are like, but if you don't have sunshine regularly, you won't have a lot of heat-gain to deal with -- hence, the need for extra ventilation. Also, the addition of foggers or other cooling equipment can reduce the need for vigorous ventilation, as the purpose of ventilation is only to moderate interior temps. Hope this helps. Bruce C.

Ruthie, if you think the pictures of Sheila are bad they are nothing compared to the gay porn videos and pictures of James that are out there. I hope Chelsia's family don't have the live feeds because of what she and James get up to. Sure they are adults but what they are doing is out there for all the world to see. Big Brother has to cut the live feeds at time and the speculation on the message boards is so that their sexual escapades don't end up all over the internet. I don't know if she realizes that the guy she fools around with under the covers has done gay porn. Chelsia told the producers she would do sexual favours in the house to stay. James and Chelsia are already talking about what they will "do" to stay in the house. Natalie, I like Natalie, I hated the way Matty treated her. She has a terrible self esteem problem and thought if she gave Matty sexual favours he would like her more. What Natalie did in the house with her breasts shocked me more than what she did to Matty. How could she do what she did knowing that the cameras filmed everything and it is out there for everyone to see. I think the producers of BB wanted to have more sexual activity in the house and I think they have gotten more than they bargained for with James and Chelsia and what Natalie has done. The televised show is edited so much that much of the stuff that goes on in the house can't be shown for fear of losing more advertisers than it already has. The producers gave the houseguests a letter telling them to tone down the swearing and the sexual inuendos and not to talk about Julie Chen. I don't care who wins as long as it isn't James, Chelsia or Josh. I think I am favouring Sharon, Ryan or Adam at this point. If Natalie won I think she would think she could buy Matty's affections and he would let her do it. I don't want her to win for that reason. Maryanne, I would like to see a better mix of people too. I would like to see Big Brother go back to the way it was the first season. I find that most of the people who post at TVCH and who watch the live feeds are people 30 years and older. Anne

Well we had a navy to supply and an empire to build dontcha know? Oddly enough, conifers are pretty much the forgotten species here in the UK. They last had a moment in the sun sometime back in the 70s (for which we certainly thank the Bloom family)...when they were planted, along with the ubiquitous heather, as low maintenance foundation plantings. Since then, with apologies to you guys, conifers have been relegated to the 4th division of trendoid planting styles and categories (unlike the sodding new perennialistas with bloody echinaceas, grasses and rudbeckias popping up everywhere, no matter how ludicrous and inappropriate). Naturally, I have been loudly and contrarily singing the praises of these much underused plants (conifers) for the past few years - falling on deaf ears but hey, baby steps...and I confess I am also starting from a position of woeful ignorance - although only yesterday, I ordered a Bhutan pine to add to the fruit tree order) and I have seedlings - lots of them. It is true though, that national characteristics (albeit largely imaginary and stereotyped) does have some bearing on our planting preferences. Unlike the French, the English have always romanticised the countryside...and that countryside, at least the one which lives in the national imagination, is largely of the green rolling hills and hedgrows variety with only a tiny bit of Highlands to compare with the vast arborial forests of the American psyche. And we are a tiny country with nothing of the geographical variety of the US (our default imaginary landscape tends to be the coast). No deserts, no prairies (although we do have the flat waterworld of the fens and Somerset levels). Ho resin...expect some action on some of these grouse moors this summer - the misery of flooding, exacerbated by the unnatural draining and clearing of the peat moors will not go unpunished for much longer - the hunting/shooting and riding to hounds fraternity are diminishing (despite recent monied converts desperate to buy into some olde english tradition) and deference to class is receding year on year.

I"m glad others are discussing what a wreck Josh is. Crying on only the 2nd day, blowing up on Megan, paranoid that he was being targeted. He needs to go home. I liked Cody. Liked that he doesn't like Paul and that he won't be pulled into saying too much. But I don't like him so much anymore. He really has no reason to dislike Megan and that was just mean to say that's the reason he was putting her up on the block. And why didn't he put Paul up??? I know he's thinking about backdooring him, but chances are it won't happen. It'll be the first of lost opportunities. Looks like a good season though. The temptations and the consequences of taking them will make for lots of twists.

This version of Big Brother is not very good so far. I usually really enjoy all the drama but this season is starting out as a big old flop.
For the first time since the show aired, I may opt out of this one, and that's unusual for me as I love reality shows....
watched Paradise Island last night to see what the fuss with that show was all about...zzzzzz - I'll be skipping that one, too.

You know you look. You can't help it. Well, that's the draw oif Big Brother. The ability to peep on the neighbors without getting in trouble.
