can't get a picture, sorry don't have a camera. but I did some research after I posted and I'm pretty sure its prolapse. it doesn't look like an open sore and the other chickens( we only have three others) don't pick on her she is the Alpha S. Its not bloody or anything and she doesn't seem to be sore from it. She seems to be really healthy other then all this poop on her hindend and the smell. she is eating fine, forageing laying fine right up until yesterday, when she dropped that egg like she couldn't hold it in before she got to a nest and then laying the shelless egg later on that same evening. We have some new baby bunnies, and have been spending a lot of time outside with all the animals so I think I would have noticed if she were acting sick. She is a very large bird. but since this is my first time having chickens I have nothing to compare her with so I just thought that her breed must get that big. I can't believe she has a calcium deficiency she gets the best scratch and laying mash and I feed all of them treats from the house like bread, tomatoes, fruit, and sometimes buy them worms and minnows. she also free ranges with only three other mates, in an enclosure over 140ft long and just about 100 ft wide. she should have plenty to nutrients. I can only guess that she is too fat and that has caused this prolapse. Do you suggest I take her off feed for a few days. I put her in her sleeping quarters today. with some bedding and some water. I won't be home today but plan on cleaning her every nite and when I am home from my various jobs doing that through out the day with warm water. The research suggested I use some prepperation H to take down the swelling. ???? open to any suggestions at this point. Thanks all CI

Please tell me if our kitchen layout is crazy! Or anything else for that matter! Let me tell you our reasoning for what we came up with. Hopefully you will be able to see a little of it in the IKEA layout we did. 1.) the room is a crazy setup with part of the kitchen extending wider than the family room. Currently there is a door leading outside to a wrap around deck (driving me nuts because everyone walks right through the middle of the kitchen to get there) , but I am ditching it and putting in another set of garden doors in the side wall of the family room. That way, people do not have to travel through the middle of the kitchen to get outside. 2.) we HATE working in corners 3.) we want open sight lines at the end of each run with nothing large (deep) blocking our view :ie looking outside at one end (we have a beautifull back yard full of trees and a pool) , and at the end of the run with the cooktop in it, looking into the dining room which is across the hall from the end of that counter run. (Am I confusing you yet!) The hallway there is actually the one that is from the entrance to our house and as you first enter the house, divides the garage wall from the living room, and then as you continue to walk in, it divides the kitchen from the dining room (we have just totally opened up the entance to the DR so that it is as wide, a little wider actually, as the kitchen). It is more like one big space now. The complicating factor is that as you continue a few more steps straight ahead down this hall (you are actually in the kitchen/dining room now) it heads straight upstairs to our second floor. I tried to capture that in the IKEA setup with a big black square. All of this limits where we can go, and what we can do with the fixed parts of the kitchen. 4.) We want the cooktop centred behind the island, and visually from the family room 5.) we're planning 2 sinks...one at the end of the island (prep), and one near the windows. Our thinking with this is that we (me) want a lot of unobstructed island space for prep, and having fun cooking with the kids. The sink near the windows will be the cleanup sink, and out of view of the family room. I realize that this layout may not be what a designer would choose to do. I just want to make sure that it doesn't look completely awful. A couple other things to note: I have placed IKEA appliances in with this plan just to have an idea of what it might look like. We like that it won't stay hot when the pot is removed (curious dog and kids) We have got some good deals( we think? ) for these appliances if we take them: fridge $2229.00, oven $2489.00, cooktop $1399.00 (Remember..Canadian $) We already have a Bosch stainless steel dishwasher. We'll get a new microwave...haven't decided on a drawer model for the island (I'm conflicted here because I want that end cabinet space for a mixer lift, and I don't want to give up drawer space in the middle island cabinet ) or we may put it about the double wall oven like shown here: https://www.houzz.com/photos/art-and-design-show-house-2012-traditional-kitchen-atlanta-phvw-vp~1795602 I've accounted for opening space for appliances etc. The gap showing in the corner of the design between the wall ovens and the pantry that is at 90 degrees to it there will actually be a very narrow tall cabinet which we can stash our broom and a few other things in. The fridge has to go where it is as we want to sink it into the wall (garage) a bit so that it does not stick out so far into the room. The other wall is an outside wall so it is not possible to put it there and sink it in. I realize that the dishwasher is at a corner with very little room for opening clearance. The 2 cabinets it will open in front of will house things that we do not access often...at least not when we normally use the dishwasher. If it ends up being too tight, my hubby plans on making the cabinets there a little shallower so that the DW opens okay. We thought about putting the DW beside the wall ovens, but we are not sure how that would look. The 12 inch cabinet that is currently located beside the wall oven is for a pullout trash can...so that it is not under the sink. The island will also have another pullout trach, but that one will likely go under the sink. We are hoping to buy all cabinets on Wednesday. That's a lot....am I missing anything? Do you have any suggestions for us. Fire away.....please...really, nothing will offend me. As much as I am having fun with this process, it is also driving me crazy!!! I am SUCH A ROOKIE AT THIS! We will probably go with the IKEA fronts as well as the boxes. I don't love the lacquered look of Lindigo, and I wish the top drawers of the cabinets had more detail, but I think it is something we will compromise. We're planning to go with a butcher block counter top on the island and then some kind of stone on the rest. Floors will be cherry hardwood. Backsplash will probaly be small, rectangular marble tiles...lighter colour (poor description..sorry). Design link is at top. OMG PLEASE WORK!!! Please help!!!!!! : )

honestly think that you are overthinking this whole project. You will achieve 90% of what you want with 10% of the effort that people on this thread are suggesting. 1) get yourself some new Marvin Integrity windows. Aluminum clad white on the outside, real divided lite. Go for 9 over 1 for a really great glassic look. 6 over 1 can look fakey. 2) have your contractor extend the soffits as was suggested. Have him put 5" fascia boards up on the ends to add more beef. 3) colonial front door. 4) 4.5" trim around all windows and doors 5) center that front-facing garage window when you do it over with a Marvin. 6) have your carpenter dress up the existing columns with some crown tops and bottoms to make them appear more stately. On your budget, your house will never look 100% perfect like a movie house. But it will look 90% of what you want, with what I just suggested. This project can be done by a carpenter and a trip to Home Depot or Lowes for under $10,000. Architect? Contractor? You're pampering yourself with those expenditures. Have a little guts and do what I said.

rhome410 - thanks for the suggestion around flipping the fridge / pantry area. I had considered it early in the process, but we were hoping to avoid in order to prevent changes to the dining room (wallpaper and paneled.) However, as you will see below I created an updated floorplan and included your suggestion. I think it helps with the overall functionality of the space. We considered the full range over the rangetop / wall ovens. We really like to idea of an oven that is up off the floor for both easy access and distance from small children. Also, the fact that the oven + rangetop combo is actually significantly cheaper is a factor. On the other hand, the full range makes the floor plan easier to arrange, provides ventilation for the ovens and also has the benefit of providing an excellent "centerpiece" to the kitchen appearance. I'd say we're undecided at this point. Do you think I have the right pro/con list? kaismom - thanks for the thoughtful feedback you've given on the overall flow and interaction of the spaces we're designing. I completely agree that this is one of the most important aspects of the design process and is also one of the hardest to figure out since it can be difficult to visualize. Let me give you a few more facts that I haven't already provided. First, we live in the Boston area (not VA). The funny thing is that we used to live in VA - up until about five years ago - so I know what you are talking about! Given the combination of relatively few truely hot days and the fact that our backyard has mostly indirect light except for in the early morning, we aren't to concerned about to much light heating up the house. The back wall of the kitchen that faces the backyard does face southwest, so I'd expect great morning light and then indirect light as the day goes on. Second, your suggestion about casual family dining is an excellent point. We were thinking that the island would be the center of family life in the evenings (homework, dinner prep, dining, clean-up.) You will see below that I've created a revised floorplan and added a placeholder for a table to the plan. My thinking right now is that we wouldn't add the table - but it gives us the option. You make some excellent points about how as the kids grow older, all being seated facing each other might be a valuable habit - I'll keep them in mind. Third, you suggested I consider how we interact with the house / yard today. I'd say 90-95% of our entrance / egress from the house happens via the garage. This is in spite of the fact that we have three other entrances (including two in the backyard.) Now that you've suggested I give this careful considering - I don't expect this to change much - so this is probably the most important entrance to get right. The second priority would be the backyard, as the kids get older I envision more time (especially on the weekends) being spent playing in the backyard. In fact, this consideration is why we are having so much consternation about giving up the side view. While not having direct access to the mudroom from the backyard isn't ideal, I'm not sure we can have both the side view and this access. Adding a door from the backyard into the garage or coming through the kitchen wall adjacent to the garage won't work because there is a bulkhead access to the basement in that corner that cannot move. That's unfortunate since this would have been an excellent solution - thanks for the suggestion! palimpsest - you asked about the right front room. It is currently a room that gets little use. We'd like to eventually turn this into a library / study of sorts since the idea of a formal living room doesn't appeal. Adding the powder room of the central hall would reduce the room dimensions from 17x18 to 13x18 - I was thinking this was still adequate space for the use we envision. Perhaps a little more of a rectangle than would be ideal, but still a space we could make work. What do you think? bmorepanic - Excellent point about the double french doors. The more my wife and I think about it, the fact that they swing creates space problems and also makes it difficult to have screens on the doors. I don't see that much opportunity to have both of these doors wide open with no screens as it's either darn cold or there are to many bugs around. Given this, we're leaning more towards a sliding door. The fact that it isn't centered on the hallway isn't all that big of a deal to me, but I'll keep an eye on it when I can get some renderings and make sure it doesn't look strange. I'm still thinking about the idea of moving the fridge to the wall adjacent to the garage. Biggest concern about this is that it moves it farther away from the family room and backyard entrance. Maybe this reduces the convenience factor? However, it does create some benefits around allowing open counter space across the whole backyard wall and what feels like a more convenient work layout. I'll keep this in mind. If you get a chance, take a look at the layout I'll provide below and let me know what you think. sundownr - it's great to hear the dimensions of your space and that you find it functions well. Very encouraging that we will eventually find a solution that will work for my family. Also great to hear you eat at the island and enjoy it - this is what we envision today. Also, the photos are helpful - thank you for providing them. As you mention, I see you went with the full range which solves the wall oven problem. We like the idea of wall ovens for their convenience and also like the ideas of deep drawers under the cooktop for pots and pans, but both the convenient floorplan as well as the asthetics of the full range certainly appeal. We're still undecided there. New Revised Floorplan: I've incorporated some of the suggestions everyone has provided in this update.
