LED and single switch for ceiling and under-cabinet lights
Comments (4)Further comment on controls For purposes of flexibility, you might want to have 2 switches (both can be dimmable) - one controlling the lights and the other the UCL. That way, you can have either the UCL alone or main lighting alone or both on. Broad spectrum LED fixture or pendant Ceiling fixtures work best with galley kitchens as the counter spaces will not be too distant. Broad spectrum lighting is a simulation of real sunlight (as it appears to the human eye). Most LED lighting will not come close to being really broad spectrum. If you're planning on using something like the L prize bulb, you will have very efficient but not really broad spectrum light. Otherwise, you'd be using lighting with a higher color temp (3500K - 5000K). Recessed light comment The swiss cheese symptom becomes very noticeable when the lights are not placed in a regular pattern and if the holes are of different sizes (eg - mix of 4", 6"). The downside to recessed lighting is that it can more complicated in terms of planning than typical surface mounts since more are typically used vs 1 central mount. However, it is always worth spending the effort planning proper lighting, even if you ultimately don't use recessed lighting....See MoreUndercabinet lighting help please. LED specifics:
Comments (2)Well, let's not get too carried away. ;) There is junk out there. But many of the LED options are good. You just have to make sure you're getting them from a place which knows what they're doing. Color temperatures have come down and are wonderful. And LEDs definitely do not use the same technology as old fluorescents. Light color does not equal similar technology. Kichler makes some great LEDs. But so do Color Kinetics, CSL and and others which we've used for clients. So in other words, if the price is in your budget, LEDs are a fantastic way to go. And in many applications pay for themselves in a reasonable amount of time....See Moreundercabinet lighting: xenon vs led. how much can leds be dimmed?
Comments (4)I looked at many LED undercabinet lights, but the light quality is not as good as Xenon. I don't like the flat color rendition of LED and the cooler color temp. I ended up getting the stainless steel Kichler Xenon strip. The only benefit of LED, in my view, is the energy efficiency. But how long do you leave the undercabinet lights turned on every day? In our case, we don't turn it on that often so the energy savings would never pay for the extra cost. We are using LED on all of the other lights including the recessed room lights, because those will be turned on all the time....See MoreAnyone have Maxlite Led light bars for undercabinet lights?
Comments (4)What do you mean by "form factor not sleek"? Yes, they are ugly but if thin enough won't be seen, right? And none are really pretty. The output seems to be roughly the same as the environmentallights led light bars. I don't need 5 independent zones. I think I need 2 though (2 different walls separated by a doorway). But how to get the power over to the other side - run a wire across the rangetop? Seems like a bad idea. Here is a link that might be useful: my other thread which shows layout...See MoreDavid
