Wegot over 2' snow over the weekend, overnite last nite we got about 10" they just said on news the worst is yet to come oh my word/...he said its gonna snow to be the band,blizzard like..We dont need any more.additional 4-8"

We've got a couple inches, gonna snow all day. I'm staying in today. Worried about Thursday.

I'm so glad some of that crud has missed ND! They are talking of flooding here again this spring. It was bad last spring..I am crossing my fingers!

You really do have my sympathy, I hate snow more every winter!

If I may, I would like to offer a few observations of hope here in what I have seen in my garden so far this year. This morning I saw a rebloom flower on my Lavender Lassie which is the first time it has rebloomed since that awful Easter 07 freeze. I am quite impressed with the color and reblooming on Light My Fire. It is as hot as the weather which is now 100F as I am writing this. I am impressed with DA's St. Cecilia blooming well in its pot. My Munstead Woods are both hanging in there with good repeat flowering and good color without too much loss in flower size in the heat although the flowers do not last long in the heat. Lichfield Angel with its sprawling habit is doing quite well. Vavoom holds its color well in the heat. Even with the high heat and high humidity, my spray program is holding up well with only a relatively few number of plants showing some blackspot, but it isn't dragging them down. Even though things are looking bleak for some people, there are at least a few little candles in the darkness.

The mites get carried by hummingbirds when they move from plant to plant. A local fuchsia grower said to just pour on the toxins. I said wouldn't that hurt the birds? She said well they're killing your plants so...... I walked away in disgust. The farm supply told me there was no cures except the more dangerous systemic chemicals so I thought up the screened frame idea. It worked great. After a few years, the sick plants near me must have died because I put out a test plant that I rooted and it never got sick. So many times I wanted to use the poison especially when I lost huge fuchsia trees that were 10 years old but I couldn't bear to think of hummingbirds with cancer or seisures or little birds with birth defects. I love my plants just as much even if I had to look at the ugly screen. I like the cheesecloth idea. They make lightweight bags with drawstrings for the orchards and I bet it's the right size for a rose. Now if they would only make ones with sticky stuff on the outside you could protect and trap at the same time.

M- I'm confused. If trees are planted in-ground, no need to root prune. If the roots have escaped from the drainage holes in a container, then you have problems. I'll assume that the trees are grounded. Control the stems....prune back to a manageable height, and keep pruning. Select a few main-stems, and train them into a tree/bush that will give you all the figs that you want. Keep what you want and cut out everything else. If you are in Zone-8, you should have no troubles with figs not ripening. If that's the case, pinch back all new growth, to within 6-8 leaves...and keep doing this pinching throughout the growing season. By doing this pinching, you'll control the height of the stems, and force the main-crop figs to develop, and ripen earlier in the season. You could also rub out any new buds that sprout from dormant wood before they get a chance to elongate into stems, or grow into extra branches. Divert the tree's energy into producing figs, instead of into unwanted vegetation, leaves, etc. It may take you a few seasons to re-establish the basic structure of the tree/bush that you want, but spend your energy into producing a large fig crop by controlling the rampant growth of the tree/bush. Pinching back, and cutting out extra stems will probably be all you need to do. What's your alternative? Hope this helps. Frank

Lady, I think the Perlato Granite will look great with your Oak Java Coffee finish. I looked through the entire gallery of cabinets looking for your finish or one close to it. There isn't anything with the Oak Java Coffee but there is one with an ebony finish on an island with a dark countertop. They look very nice together. You should be able to get a large sample of the Perlato Granite from Formica. Sometimes a local big box home store will have larger samples. I was thinking the same thing Nodakgal!! I know all of us are going to get some crazy runoff!

When we were getting swamped in January non stop I kept thinking , move this somewhere else. Finally storms did move on. After getting massive amounts of snow and it just sits there everyday, I am way past ready for spring. It would be interesting to fly over the mountains, midwest and east coast to see all the snowy views. For a little while anyway.

Me, too....on Thursday, I have hair appointment, grocery shopping and dinner reservations.
As the snow is piling up against the doors leading outside - and the wind hasn't started yet.

Apparently we have enough already. We got only about an inch this AM, and now the sun is shining and the temp is 30Â° but the wind is blowing very hard. They tell us we will have winds/gusts up to 50MPH.

I guess we here can relax now. No one in this area has lost power.

There has been one tragedy about 25 miles from here. A house burned down because equipment could not get up the long curvy driveway. Thankfully, everyone got out safely.

We still have high mounds all around; they will take a while to melt.

We've been lucky.

All limited access highways around here have been closed, except for I95 and the PA Turnpike(which is only allowing certain vehicles).
All bus service here is shut down, as is the airport. Commuter trains may shut down at any time.

My kids (daughter and son-in-law) who live in the Baltimore MD area say they are close to something called a 'Category 1 Hurricane Blizzard'. I thought they made the term up, but looked it up on Google and it's there! Sounds pretty bad. My daughter said snow still hasn't been cleared from the first storm in many places and they are looking for 4 wheel drives to take doctors an nurses to work.
