Replace halogen downlights
Comments (2)Check your cans carefully. On a lot of them, there is a transformer in each can. Generally one does not need to replace transformers. Just use 12v LED MR16s, plug, play. If they have electronic power supplies, YMMV....See MoreSeeking Recommendations for LED Downlighting (Gen Illumination)
Comments (4)Renaissance Lighting has the best combination of features and performance, including dimming, of any fixture I've seen. This is a premium product and priced accordingly. The optics are intended to cut off the beam for low glare and to direct the light. Also look at the new Juno Aculux as they now have LED. LED will be coming to Cooper IRIS soon too. Comments (7)Thanks -- I figured that that I'd probably be okay with the 6.5" holes, though obviously before I commit to something I'll have to ensure that they'll work for me. More than anything, though, I'm curious about what makes a "quality" retrofit/remodel housing, considering the wide range of prices. Here are some examples: I'd likely considering something 'cheap', like this, at Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.ca/product/6-in-i-c-remodel-housing/913659 Compared to others like these: http://www.canadalightingexperts.com/lighting/11-314-472-0-190925/Sea-Gull-Lighting_Remodel-Non-IC-Housing-11017.htm (mid-priced) http://www.canadalightingexperts.com/lighting/11-314-472-0-241530/Thomas-Lighting_6--Recessed-Housing-PS9-RM.htm http://www.canadalightingexperts.com/lighting/11-314-472-0-220274/Thomas-Lighting_6--Asic-Remodel-Recessed-Light-PS1-RM.htm http://www.canadalightingexperts.com/lighting/11-314-472-0-166926/WAC-Lighting_6-inch-CFL-Shallow-Remodel-Non-IC-Air-Tight-R-F608D-R-A.htm (airtight?) Comments (5)For now we are using 3 CFL's in our ganged pendent light fixture. Each CFL is 100 watt equivalent and rated at 1650 lumens. The combined 4950 lumens is approximately 1/2 of the old fixture we replaced. We've decided we can get by with that amount of light and it's actually "brighter" than we expected. The CFL's take about 5 minutes when turned on to achieve their full brightness. During that 5 minutes or so they make a slight buzzing sound but the sound disappears when they are fully on. We tried 3, 150 watt equivalent CFL's and were much happier with the total level of light. Each of those bulbs is 2650 lumens so that brought us up to 7950 lumens which was almost indistinguishable from the 10,000 lumens fixture we replaced. Unfortunately, the 150 watt equivalent CFL's are very large and protruded from the bottom of the hanging pendant globes. If you really want plenty of light the 150 watt equivalent CFL's may meet your needs but a suitably large globe is required to conceal the bulb....See Moregrumpydave
