Does chicken soup really make you feel any better?

I can't answer that scientifically but I know when I have a cold I always heat up a can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup just like my Mom did when I was a kid. It's one of my fondest memories and reminds me of my Mother's nurturing.

But of course it does. Specially the home made kind... you know, chicken, garlic, carrot, a bit of onion, some noodles and a WHOLE lot of love just does!

:)

Dirtygardener, Your Pond Branch Community that you left is exactly like it is here, same miles, I'm 7 driving miles from Floral City (lots closer as the crow flies) and 15 miles plus from everything else. All the neighbor land plots are 5, 10, 15, & 20 acres or more. There are a few grandfathered 2.5 acre lots, but very few. I bought my 10 acres back in the 70's thinking to retire here. We had a Doublewide MFG. Home put in here as most of the area is MFG. Homes. We also have a house in Apopka on a postage stamp lot which was my wife's daddy's home. She inherited it when he passed a few years back. There is no way I could live there in a HMO with no yard whatever and nosy neighbors. When I go to check up on the house they descend like mocking birds all squawking at the same time at my minimal maintenance. They just fuel my rage for HMO's. Amberroses, I'm finding 10 acres is a heck of a lot of land to manage for an old guy in his 70's. It seems to be taking forever to accomplish what I have in my mind for here. I cut a few trees and clean undergrowth each winter and push the jungle back a bit each year but it's taking longer than expected because I cannot work in the summer's heat. I haven't even started with floral plants as yet due to their maintenance would cut into my land clearing time. The only plants I've put in is my orchard trees as they need time to grow and fruit. Corar, I hear you on the economy keeping us limited on our endeavors. I wanted to build a real house here but settled for a MFG. Home because of the cost difference and I was able to build my barn with the savings. I also bought a leftover 2 year old unused FEMA trailer for very cheap from the Govt. and I use it as guest house for when the kids come to visit. The grand-kids love it and think they are camping at grandpa's farm. Lou

It's not media hype, although this is red meat to the media's 24/7 news cycle. The WHO on Wednesday raised its alert level to Phase 5, the second-highest, indicating a pandemic may be imminent, and was talking about moving to Phase 6. The Phase 5 alert -- the first ever -- activates added efforts to produce a vaccine. "It really is all of humanity that is under threat during a pandemic," WHO Director General Margaret Chan said in Geneva. "We do not have all the answers right now, but we will get them." We have it in our county and we now have cases in the two towns next to mine. In New YOrk, ground zero seems to be St. Francis Prep in Queens and the cases in my area are adults who worked there. I don't scare easily but I am also worried, especially for the young and old. I had Grace at the DR. Monday for a re-check of something else and there were 5 teenagers sitting int he waiting room (unusual) and I found out from the nurse after they all thought they had swine flu. I would have never brought Grace in... We are taking common sense precautions with hand washing, etc. My son is on sports that has kids from different districts and I am debating about going tonight. I am not an alarmist, but I would rather be safe than sorry. It is spreading fast.

Chicken and Potato Soup...How could I have made it better?
Q

My Mom always made my Grandmother's Brunswick Stew to welcome the start of winter: Chicken Potato Sliced Carrot Diced Celery Frozen Baby Lima Beans, thawed Canned Whole Kernel Corn, drained Diced canned tomatoes in juice Onion (I have to leave this out when I make it now) A dash of black pepper Salt to season to your preference about 1/4 - 1/2 tsp Oregano Chicken Broth Cook the chicken in broth until done, debone if not already boneless, and chop into small enough pieces to fit on your spoon. Cook carrot and celery (and onion if using) in a little water until just starting to soften, add potato (and a little more water if needed) and cook until vegetables are close to done; drain. Combine with chicken, broth, and the rest of the ingredients, cook for at least 1/2 hour to get the lima beans soft. I don't have exact measurements because it depends on whether you are cooking for 1 or a crowd. Basically, I use about 1 large potato to 2 chicken breasts and enough of the other veggies to equal about 2 cups mixed (in about equal parts) when I am making it for DH and me for dinner and plan on having the leftovers for lunch. Can I make a good chicken soup without bones

Curious what you mean by just broth. Or do you mean boneless chicken parts. Or do you mean canned broth. I make a vegetable stock all the time using vegetable scraps. Both ends of a large onion and the first outer ring with the skins, top and bottom of a whole celery, a couple whole carrots, (they are cheap), parsley stems. Peppercorns, coriander seed, a couple bay leaves, thyme...i usually have green leek tops. I like cilantro stems for that zip-zing. Like Lindac mentioned, poaching your chicken makes a nice delicate broth full of flavor. Using bones gives a much better flavor but still good by poaching with veggies and no bones. Poach chicken in the veg stock, remove when done, let cool while simmering the broth and preparing the soup veggies. Veggie stock just takes 45min-1 hour. Strain stock, (chicken-n-rice soup?), add rice and cook in broth till tender, then add your fresh saute veggies and chopped chicken. It is a very simple clear broth soup. A classic 'ladies lunch' soup in NYC. Light, not fatty. Usually a garnish of parsley and a slice of lemon. Chive sprig, lol.

Yes, but not to eat, to make. I went to the funeral of a friend yesterday, and came home and started some chicken soup. Something about chopping the vegetables, stirring the pot and smelling the aroma is very comforting. When troubled, cook.

Yep, love to make it, love to eat it.

It sure does. The other thing that gives me comfort when I have a cold is hot apple juice or cider.

Yes, and it has to be Campbell's chicken noodle. I had a can last night for dinner. Not the can, the soup inside!

I don't know. When I'm sick, no one ever gives me soup anymore.

When I'm sick, the first thing I want to eat is usually McDonald's (cheeseburger and fries) or farina with lots of milk, butter and sugar. The farina is from my childhood but I'm not sure why the McD's. We rarely ate fast food when I was growing up. It's something DH can easily run out and grab for me, maybe that's why.

It really does. The taste, the smell - it's just comforting.

Definitely!

However, in our house homemade potato soup made thick is also a comforting soup. (It must be all those bland carbs and the warmth that spreads in you as you eat it.)

I dunno....I haven't been sick in so long and when I am sick, I am too sick to make chicken soup. However, I had some canned soup when I had pneumonia. It didn't make me feel better but I had to eat something.

We always keep the house stocked with canned Progress chicken soup, tissues, and bottle water during the winter. When we get a cold, that last thing I want to do is run out to the store!

I can't stand to eat chicken soup when I'm sick. It's blah and warm.

I usually live on OJ and toast and honey at first. When my appetite returns I want something either cold and crunchy like a sandwich piled high with veggies or hot and spicy like chili or ravioli. As a child I loved tripe in HOT red sauce when I got sick.

Yummy! Yes, I believe it makes me feel better. Homemade here also, but when I'm too sick to make it, Campbell's is just fine!

I cheat! I make a BIG pot ever so often, and then freeze some. All except the noodles.

Thus, when I am sick, I can just put on a pot of water, boil some noodles (me thinks, noodles cooked and then added tastes way better, than cooked in the broth), and thaw and heat my chicken soup. Add the noodles and wa la, yummy comfort food.
