I have a collapsable stainless steamer with a little handle...works for me...but it's shiny silver instead of cute yellow.

I don't boil food often. I don't know if that's better for steasming. I don't have one, so I don't know.

I've had one for a couple of months and love it. Got it at Bed, Bath & Beyond. It's silicone and collapes so it does not take up much room.

teresa, what do you think are the advantages of using the Food Pod as opposed to a regular pot and a strainer to "fish" things out? I like the idea but it seems like there's an extra step filling it and immersing it in another container. I think the process looks like fun but am just wondering.

Well, I had one of those little metal ones a number of years ago and when it went caput, I just didn't buy another. I have bamboo steamers in 2 sizes, but those aren't too great for just steaming one or two small portions of veggies. I liked it for the hard boiled egg idea. The real reason I got it was because I wanted something small that did not take up much space.

On Monday I was making some pasta for a cold salad I would take to school on Tuesday. The water got to boiling and I broke an ear of corn in two and set it in the food pod in the pot for two minutes. Then I pulled it out and threw in the pasta. One less pot to clean!

Pretty cool little gadget. I guess you would have to set it in a steamer basket or thingy to steam though.

I remember your food loops on those stuffed ribs Ann.

David - it has hooks on the side so you clip to the edge of the pot. No steamer basket needed.

I steam a lot of clams. Do you think the clams could open in the food pod? It would be so much easier than getting them out one by one.

I don't see why they wouldn't open. As long as the pod is not too crowded. The pod holds a dozen large eggs. Thought I would add that, not knowing how many clams you are talking about.

Thanks teresa. I only noticed the big main hook in the vid. If it has more around the edge of the main basket that would work for sure.

Cool, I could be convinced! I use the metal basket type all the time! Finger tongs look interesting, but too pricey. I bought the poach pods - they're a fun toy too!

This gadget takes up no room. I flatten in and put it in my dish towel drawer. Silicone has "memory" and it bounces right back to it's original shape.

Silicon is beach sand and silicone is an elastomer rubber, which is not the same as plastic from petroleum. It is very stable.

I have made silicone rubber molds for soap and candle making, and I have made food-grade silicone rubber molds for food. It is used extensively in food proccessing.

Food-grade silicone rubber is very safe for food. It can take very high baking temperature. Boiling and steaming is not a problem at all.

Call me Mr. Negative but... What's the benefit? Here's what I see:

- A steamer basket that by design crowds the food.
- A colander whose holes are too big to contain a lot of smaller items that standard colanders and steamers have no issue with.
- A gadget that, if used as advertised, lets heat/steam escape from a boiling pot as you're trying to boil/steam.

I'd need a few more plusses to offset the negatives. In the meantime, I think I'll take Nancy's cue and google silicone breast implants, "just to see if they're safe!"
