Today In History: The Day The Music Died

On this day in 1959, rising American rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson are killed when their chartered Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashes in Iowa a few minutes after takeoff from Mason City on a flight headed for Moorehead, Minnesota.

I have enough Irish blood in me to remember my Grandpa doing jigs around the dining room table. LOL My Great Grandma Paul on my Mom's maternal side was an Irish Kennedy, My Grandpa's Scottish clan was banished to Ireland for sheep poaching which is why his last name started with an McC instead of a MacC. You can tell we have a lot of "black Irish" (mix of Spanish and Irish) genes in our blood - well not mine but those of my Mom and her siblings and most of my siblings. They are lucky and have darker skin and dark hair while myself and my brother Donald were the fair haired, rosey cheeked children. My Mom and her siblings were born in Scotland. There is also Irish blood on both sides of my Dad's family. Although he and 2 of his siblings were born in Canada my Grandpa, Grandma and my Uncle were born in England. Anne

Gas! The only way to cook. Ideally, I want a dual fuel stove...gas cooktop and electric/convection double oven. What I'll probably get is a gas range. What I have is a wounded electric range. If I set the oven to 410 degrees, the oven will, eventually, heat up to 350. It takes it about 30 minutes to reach this temp. Three of the four burners work. Still, I'm not cooking over an open buffalo-chip fire to feed six children, so I'm not complaining!

No, thank goodness. Maybe it helps that we have a sign over the door, with a picture of a .357 Magnum, which reads "Forget the dog...Beware of Owner"! Our neighbor has a sign, with a picture of a rifle, that reads "We don't call 911". The crime rate is low out here in the sticks.....

Sounds strange, but.... getting the snow blower to start late yesterday afternoon. Worked fine in the morning, then wouldn't start when we needed it again in the afternoon. We finally figured it out and that was a definite highlight!

Everytime I flipped on a light switch, the lights actually CAME ON! And the shower was HOT. Aaaaah.

Yep, it's true, having power is a thrill. Oh, and Woody went fishing and caught a really big large-mouth bass, so that was his highlight of the day.

Played golf on the Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay. Absolutely gorgeous weather. Spectacular views. Played with good friends.

Talking with my daughter many times yesterday and my next to the oldest granddaughter too. Oh...and making ovens. Don't ask. LOL

Both Dean and I had the day off together. We took Kalie & Mike to the airport so they could go on vacation. We just hung out and did what we wanted to do...didn't have to do anything! So my whole day was great!

Can't think of anything. I did work out for a half hour and felt great afterward. Oh, and the kids finally went back to school. Of course, it's snowing again today and they are back out again.

I started a diet... not sure that is a 'highlight'... but if I lose a lot of weight on this one I guess it would be!

Surviving 8 straight hours of data entry as fast as I can at my old place of business. I help out for them on as as-needed basis, and can't believe I did this for 20-some years! And with no help for the most part! At least they still value me, and I can still get it on when I need to. And the "on call" pays very well. And I survived.

This will go on for another couple of months, only a couple of days a week, and the bank balance will be boosted. Altogether to the good. My hands WILL limber up, if they don't freeze in place.

Highlight from yesterday? It was a vacation day from work for us, and we'd gone to wine country for the weekend. Yesterday we had a lazy day of shopping in Dean and DeLuca in St. Helena, then some wine tasting at the Rubicon Estate Winery in Rutherford (between St. Helena and Napa). We're wine club members (Rubicon level) and are always recognized and treated very well.

Headed home yesterday evening and today it was "back to the old grind," except that I had the "pleasure" of thinking that it's only a 3-day work week for me since Friday is the first of the Governor's furlough days.

Making the final payment on my credit card.

Other than my mortgage and regular monthly bills (phone, electric, etc.), I am not completely and totally out of debt.

I stopped by the thrift store and found an Eagle (Brand) Craftstor craft module. I have a large tote, the sewing module, and two compact totes (saving to give to a couple of my nieces), and several of the smaller insert storage modules.

I'm still searching for the older, dark purple totes or another sewing module. I can't find them, even on eBay now.

The first photo shows a sewing module. It's about 9x9x9x. The one I have is purple! It holds everything I need to take to the quilt shop for an evening of piecework. The module I found yesterday has different inserts, I think it's a knitting or crochet tote, but it's the same size as the sewing module.

This was an excellent line of craft/sewing totes, well made in the USA and now discontinued. :(

Here's the large craft tote with several inserts. I'm hoping to find this in the original deep purple/fuschia/teal colorway.
