Does anyone have, or have you used, an Alligator Dicer? I'm thinking, if it really works, how much time it would save when making salsa if nothing else.
I have the small one, from Williams Sonoma, for garlic and I really like it, it works well. I have to get the bigger one, for onions, since salsa season is fast approaching and this year I'm not chopping onions, either.
Linda, some people just have no sense of humor.... I have used one in someone else's kitchen. Doesn't do well with tomatoes nor peppers... For a large amount of salsa, you can't beat a Cuisinart...or a good chef's knife for a small amount. Put the $25 into the fund for a good food processor. Linda C
I've always wondered how it deals with the horizontal portion of the slice. Not critical for onions which have a built-in cross-cut, but for instance how does it dice potatoes if you haven't already sliced them. And if you already have the knife out to slice them, what's a few more quick cuts?
Then again, this is coming for someone who would have to be mincing a whole lotta anything before justifying bringing out the food processor.
Linda C, you jumped the gun before I could reply to Linda's question. Sure I have a sense of humor but now I'm not sharing my recipe for diced alligator salsa. I also have a good food processor and I do use my chef's knife for many things but that's beside the point. I think my question has been answered. As is usually the case, some like it and some don't. I actually had Annie's Salsa in mind. I preferred using my chef's knife to the food processor but I got mighty tired by the end of a chopping, slicing, mincing, dicing day.
I had it and hated it. Gave it to my BBF and she LOVES it.
I prefer a knife but my knife skills are a lot better than hers and by the time she's sliced everything for chopping I have a neat pile of the same veggie :)
I also am trying to clean my kitchen of one use gadgets.
I would love your nicer dicer. It would be great since hudson is graduating into finger food and the cubes would be helpful. Plus with all the canning that goes on around here, I think it would be a real time saver.
I got the Vidala Chop Wizard at BB&B the other day and it made quick work of the onions, peppers and tomatoes for the 100+ jars of salsa we made yesterday. I am quite impressed.
I also got the Reynolds Handi-Vac and the "boys" had fun packing the leftovers for the fridge.
Now that I have two useful products, I can assemble all the salsa ingredients during the week and cook and can on the weekend. Sure saves a lot of time and very hard work.
Stacie, I emailed you via iVillage last month when you requested the dicer, I guess it didn't get to you. I had it sitting on the counter waiting for your address when my DD (she doesn't do gadgets and is dreading the day she has to go through my stuff). She was asking how to chop a lot of onions so I offered it to her. I'll check with her to see if she is okay with it, if not, I'll try to get together with you again.
