I don't have that one Dawn! I thought you were asking for a recipe for roast skunk or something of that sort :-)

I hope you get your recipe quickly and your dogs smell better!

I found this for you:

"If the tomato juice doesn't work or if you'd rather drink it than wash your dog in it, try a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and regular dish soap. Use about 1 qt of 3% peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and a drizzle of dish soap. Mix it well and add a cup of water if needed and then lather up your dog right away."

Hope this helps. Good luck!

THe PET forum has this in its FAQ section (I contributed this one even!!)

If it was sprayed in the eye please get it to the vet ASAP as it can cause blindness.

Now onto getting rid of the smell. I recently watched a Discovery Channel program where they tried different solutions to get rid of the odor. Here is the results:

1. A homemade remedy of: One pint of hydrogen peroxide, one small box of baking soda, and a couple of squirts of any dish washing liquid mixed in a gallon of water. This was the best at removing the skunk smell.

2. Tomatoe Juice. Yes it did work. Not great as it left a slight skunk odor, and there was the chance that it could give a red tinge to a light colored dog's hair, but it did work.

3. Commercial products to remove the smell did not work as well as the above two, but did remove some of the smell.

In a pinch, mix up Downy fabric softner and water and sponge on. I think the ratio is one part Downy and 10 parts water. I think it would be safe on carpets and cloth furniture if the dog rubs trying to get rid of the smell.

I'm with Jel48. I figured in these hard economic times, other food sources were being explored. LOL. The only experience I've had was when our cat tangled with a skunk and I bathed her in tomato juice. She went from an orange and white kitty to a pink and orange one, Not a pretty color choice. Good luck in finding the info you need. Dottie

Our dog went right up to a skunk and sniffed it's behind. It was aweful. Poor thing was temporarily blinded. We found the same recipe that Lattefairy has on the internet and used that. It worked the best as everything else. The others worked until she dried and then the smell came back.

It could have been worse. While researching the recipe I read a post by a woman who had two german shepherds. They got sprayed when the owners were not home. The dogs immediately went into the house via a doggy door and proceeded to spread the stink everywhere. They had to rip up carpet, and redo the whole house except for one bedroom because that door was closed!

Here is the one Lori uses.

Skunk Smell Removal

1 qt. peroxide
1 qt. warm water
3 T. DAWN dishsoap, no substitues
1 c. baking soda

Mix well. Sponge on dog. Get him soppy wet. Let sit 15-20 minutes. Add some water & lather. Rinse well.

Lori uses this several times a year on poor Tuffy!

I thought this title thread was a recipe search. LOL.

I've had excellent results with tomato juice followed by a bath of course.

Thank you everyone!!!

PLAIN toothpaste - rubbed really well into the dog's fur - followed by the recipe using the peroxide and baking soda. This is what professional groomers use. I have all of the ingredients at the ready since we have a white American Eskimo and a skunk living next door - so far, so good. Now if only I could convince my husband that once he opens a bottle of peroxide it loses its effectiveness. My main hope is that when/if my dog gets sprayed that the groomer or the vet is open - don't care which one. I do worry about him being sprayed in the eyes. Another obvious point, which so many people seem to miss and then kick themselves - is that if dog is wearing a collar or harness when sprayed, they too will stink and the smell is not easy to get out of many of these items - particularly leather. Many of my dog's groomer's clients have come to pick up their pets with said stinky collars - good thing she sells new ones.

I used a cup of bleach in a 3 gal. pail of water. It was so effective I could let our dog in the house the next morning. A chemist at work said it is because the bleach breaks down the molecules of the skunk spray.

Cheap & quick too.

I did find one of the other kind of skunk recipes.... just decided to look and see if there were any out there.

Here is a link that might be useful: French Fried Skunk

No way.... people really eat skunk? I can't believe that recipe, I bet it's a joke.

The only problem I see is "Sponge on dog. Get him soppy wet. Let sit 15-20 minutes." Once that dog gets soppy wet, most every (live) dog I know of will be shaking!!! LOL
