The Kitchen Table

Electricity was out for 5 hours tonight.

I guess we are lucky it is not cold here, but at 6pm, the electricity went out till 11:15. There were several streets around here without power. So I ran errands, and it was still out. Then we went a town away for dinner to take up some more time. Got home about 10 and it was still out with lots of trucks working in two locations.

It gets boring being wide awake and in the dark. Lit a few candles and tried to knit while DH gave up and went to bed.

I wonder how many people had dinner half cooked when the electricity went out. They said over 100 homes had no power, and most of us have electric stoves.

That happened to us a few weeks ago. We had just finished with dinner, but it was difficult to try and clean the dishes up by candlelight.

I agree it is very boring. I tried reading by candlelight, but gave up after about a chapter.

That was a long evening, wasn't it?

When this happens I always think of how pioneers and others lived before electricity. I guess they went to bed early, exhausted from the harder work they did then.

Why did the power go out?

I meant to ... but forgot. Had a light or two on ... plus computer ... plus radio, I think. By the way - those Tiki torches throw out smoke, don't they? A bit of six of one, half dozen of the other at work, here? I agree that expanding the knowledge of the need to reduce pollution, global warming and waste is important. When the oriental folks by multiplied millions begin to come anywhere near our level of generation of those pollutants and warming - our unemplyed people won't be able to put gas in our cars or our generators. But that won't matter much - for the world will be becoming so polluted that there'll be a question as to whether mankind may survive. Have you visited a garbage dump lately? When are we going to tell our appliance manufacturers, who 60 years ago built appliances that could operate 40 years later ... ... that we're sick and tired of buying current appliances that'll only last for 10 years - 15 at the outside? Only tiny birds that haven't learned any better foul their own nest. ole joyful

It actually was surprisingly lovely this morning. All quiet in anticipation of the influx...of all of one guy! Right. One "crew" member only. One very efficient, very neat, very dedicated crew member. He has torn out the whole kitchen already (save the floor) and will be back tomorrow to continue. Not a speck of dust anywhere!!! He said he'd put the plastic up tomorrow since he'll be sawing up the walls and ceiling etc... So..now I have to wait for the dumpster delivery which of course was due this morning at 10. Oh well. At least I know I can count on my contractor. Now, back to work! D

There are certainly a zillion kinds of lights and everyone has a fav. These T-5s are 6400 so I guess I will just see. It would be interesting to know if, on plumerias, anyone notices any difference between the T-5s and Glow Panels. I could just run out and get every new thing that comes along. But I have to remind myself of the many a successful cattleya growers I know who still use standard T-12 fluorescents + a $12 plant light (red wave length). Lol! Hopeful, my T-5s will do the job. I sure do have enough of them.

Thanks all, I was watching the temps last night and we actually hit 4 at 11 pm last night so it's not like it would have been just a few hours at the low or so so I'm glad I moved everyone. No frost though so I guess my garden plants will live another day! Thanks Laura! Yep that's a Meyer with my first fruit ever on. There are actually 4 honkers on there, one got hit with the hail but the hail mark never seemed to spread or try to rot the fruit so I have been watching the fruit and decided to leave it on to fully ripen. It's killing me though it's taking forever!! The one beside it to the right is a eureka lemon and it has 4 good sized lemons on it too... Also my first ever!! So excited for those, but no sign of ripening yet. There was 5 but the hail got one.... Thanks Steve the garage is transitional until I put my trees in my grow room permanently. It faces south so I just open the doors and they get full sun. You remember my grow room with the HO T5s? I will post a pic when they go in there. Thanks Cory, yes the wether here can be cruel. But we got a super early spring so I can't complain much. You are so right about the occasional lows and then back to seasonal... That always happens here too! This entire week looks kind of nasty though so who knows what this season will bring. Good for you for getting started on your set up! Its terrible having to do it all in a panic like I did last night! Thanks dev I hope your season continues as long as possible. This is quite early even for us. I wanted to supplement my grow room too, I even just ordered a new bank of T5s but my electrician is tied up on another job. He better hurry up, running out of time!!

I have one large and two miniature oil lamps which sure comes in handy when electricity goes out.

Something apparently malfunctioned. DH guesses a transformer. They were repairing it for hours. We went out for a leisurely dinner, and when we got back, they got the power on for 30 seconds a few times and then it blew again. Then it would come on a half hour or so later and blow yet again. Glad it was finally fixed.

Yes, I always think of our ancestors pre electrical power when we have to do without. I also think of our ancestors when I fly and look down at the western mountains and think of their hardships walking beside their conestoga wagons across our nation to settle the West.

Me too, Sheila! We are so accustomed to our roads, but the pioneers had to go over such rough, rugged terrain. And their shoes probably were not so good and wore out fast. Women were pg or if not pg dealing with the monthly issues. Cranky kids, difficult horses/oxen or whatever, broken wagons, every meal so much work, cooking in the heat, in the rain. Very, very difficult.

Years ago I read Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey. I still have the book.
