recessed lighting brands you like?

We are doing some remodeling. We saw Juno recessed lights we liked until my husband saw the springs attached to the trim. He thought they looked flimsy.

Are they? Do you have to pull off the trim when you change the bulb? Otherwise, I would think you don't have to worry about pulling a lot on those springs. Does anyone have an opinion about this?

What are your favorite brands? We want good quality.

We are getting desperate!

We bought Halo - but I believe Juno is also a good quality can.

We avoided "springs" on our 6 inch cans - Halo (and I assume Juno) sell trims that do not use them.

Our lighting designer just likes Halo. We have 6 inch line voltage cans, 4 inch line voltage, and 4 inch low voltage cans in out kitchen.

You must be talking about the baffle trim with the little coiled springs that suspend the trim from up inside the housing. To remove a trim you remove the lamp first then unhook the springs. So no, you don't remove the trim to replace the lamp. Only a few trim styles use this type of spring and this is not limited to Juno.

Lighting design starts with the lamp required, then the trim and housing to hold the lamp. There are scores of trims to choose from. Interior design considerations can influence the trim choice. It is working backwards to run out and buy some housings thinking that you'll deal with trims and lamps later. You just limited yourself to whatever fits in that particular brand and model of housing.

Each manufacturer excels in something. Juno has, in general, been just a bit more clever and inspired with their trim designs. Their 4" low voltage trims are a bit nicer than Halo's for many of the comparable choices. Juno offers some colors that Halo doesn't have. Halo has occasionally come out with something new and clever. They currently have a nice line of 3" fixtures that Juno is probably working on a response to.

Some of the little details I'm referring to may not mean much to all. An example that is important to interior designers is that Juno's 4" LV slot aperture trim is easily paintable which lets it blend into ceilings. Halo uses a two piece design that doesn't work as well.

Cooper Lighting owns Halo and also Iris. Iris is where Cooper focuses their design talent. lris is considered to be one of the best of what recessed fixtures have to offer. Juno's Aculux line was brought out to compete with Iris. There are several smaller brands of high end fixtures that are very nice also.

If you're looking for a "spec" grade product, I think Acculux by Juno , or Iris by Halo are the best lineup for the residential project..both have excellent flourescent products for general illumination. For the next step down, Juno has made great strides in their product offering, specializing in the residential market Run, not walk, away from any line voltage MR16(Gu10) ,Par16,or Par20 LAMP. They are vastly inferior in all aspects, except for price, from a good quality MR16 -12v

Which brand of recessed light? Temperature of 2700K or 3000K?

I looked at the 2700 and 3000 lights. The 2700 lights look almost identical to standard incandescent lights. I checked out a few varieties. I then put in the 3000. DH liked the whiter light vs the yellow light of the 2700. We went with the 3000 and I like them. I feel it is brighter but I can dim them. I went with a different brand - Cooper - these can go into 5 or 6 inch cans. The Cree can only go in the 6 inch cans. The Cooper is also self trimming. I still have decorative lighting when I want "mood" lighting. If you can pick up any bulbs to test - it is really helpful in the decision making. I couldn't test the dimming factor but could see the color difference.

Which brand/company recessed light you used in your shower/tub area?

We went for function, and installed a a fan Motion and Humidity Sensor with light in the shower. The cats set off the motion sensor all the time, but the fan dries out the shower completely and no mildew!! I updated most of the 6" can lights in the master bath with LED retrofits like these Can light replacements, and installed a semi flush pendant using a Can light converter kit in the center of the room.
