Plum jam query.

I am going to try my hand at Santa Rosa plum jam this year, if I get to the plums in time. This heat wave may have undone my plans. I have looked at recipes online and they all seem to have tons of sugar. Is that just the way it has to be or can I reduce the sugar and increase the lemon juice?
