New Front Portico ---Work in Progress! (photos)

After living here for six years, we finally had an architect (who was working on deck plans for the back) design a portico for our front that takes care of the water issues, gives us more room at the front door and provides a little oomph to the facade---which was sorely lacking.

It's not finished, but I am really happy with the way it is shaping up. The top of the portico is a roofing membrane material that ties in with the shingles between the two gables. It is slightly sloped towards the columms, which conceal two four-inch pipes (as well as steel columns) that connect together under the brick steps and are piped out to the dry creek bed about 100 feet beyond.

You have no idea how excited I am about figuring out how to post photos. I feel like when my son would get a new Lego! The hutch means 'love' to me. It took years to find it and I can only imagine how much history and stories come with it. Almost everything displayed on each shelf is new but look on the bottom shelf - I know it's hard to see but the plate shows a scene of 2 deer - a buck and a doe. It belonged to my great-grandmother. My grandmother gave it to me at my wedding. I was told that 'Bubbie' brought it over from Russia. Her mother had given it to her as a wedding gift. It survived a trans-Atlantic crossing, Ellis Island, and now it's in my house. Do you see the spice tins? Montco, Ann Page, and Durkee metal tins that I inherited from my mother-in-law. My sister-in-law took the Waterford, I wanted the tins! They're from the 1940's and 50's. The pumpkin pie spice says 27cents on it! I just opened then and believe it or not the cinnamon and pp spice still smell fresh!

Here are a couple photos of the SAm and SAl lights at night: They started it up yesterday and we've been brushing the WetEdge twice a day. I woke up this morning to find the filter pressure already 10 psi over backwash pressure. So I learned how to backwash today. Took like 5 minutes. All that plaster dust really gunked up the filter. It seems to be holding at a lower pressure today. Well, that's all folks. 18 days from dig to turn on. And all workmanship is of high quality. The stone sub is coming back tomorrow to add more stone to the rock beam, because the builder wasn't satisfied with the look. Other than that, we're good to go. I got in for about 30 minutes yesterday. It's still pretty chilly, but it gave me a good chance to put on some goggles to do an underwater inspection. Everything looks good. Now comes Pool School and learning how properly maintain it.

YES they do. The grandmother spied on us the whole time my company was here. And she thinks we can not see her through or over the fence but we can. Sh would stand there and listen to what we were saying. Then yesterday grandson was hiding out in the little shed that has a window watching me. He is 20 years old. He has said some very sick things to me and should have been slapped silly but I am not that way I just told grandmother I do not want anything more to do with him and to keep him off my property. And I told her why. Grandmother has no idea what is really going on over here.Right after my husband died she saw men coming here and assumed I was already seeing new men. NOT NOT NOT. The men coming here were my investors and we were dealing with the death benefit . Thing is they wanted me to do one thing and I had a totally different idea so they kept coming here to try to talk me into their way putting more money in their pockets. OH NO!! but she thought I was having dates already. And she watches me like a hawk. I am 5 years older than she is and do not need her telling me what to do. Or making assumptions about my life. And see her kitchen window is just such she can see who comes and goes here and I have nothing to hide so I am not asking people that come to not park so she can not see them. And the really funny thing it I actually have several men friends that have come to help me do one thing or another. ALL of them are married and I totally respect a marriage. So now I try to bring them in the side door so they are really in full view just to frost her nosy self. I do not get mad I get even. Sorry rant over. LOL

It's ok. Light appears to be pointed up, which may not light the entry as much as you'd like, but will work. The functional part is what I am so excited about, although I admit it will be nice to have a more gracious entry. With a river of rain from a large hipped roof and two gables pouring down into one valley five feet across the front steps, occasionally we would have so much water the 7" gutter could not handle it and spray would cascade out over the steps! We did modify the gutter when we moved in after that happened a few times, but it wasn't a permanent solution like this is.

kswl - Your home and land are stunning! Please take a photo of the after from the other side of your driveway.

The architect did an excellent job of tying into your existing roof-lines. Let us see the back deck when you are finished with that project.

Thanks, newhomebuilder and everyone else! I will take more photos when it is finished---we are hoping it will be just a few weeks more... if it would ever stop raining. The architect has been wonderful--- we found her by serendipity and she's straightened out all sorts of problems. We are almost finished with the back deck of river rock, and the brick is also finished up back there. There's a little more fencing to be replaced and regrading to be done in the backyard, but another month should do it. We'll be replacing our interior doors over the next few months and that should be interesting :)

haha.,,we ended up with...NADA !! a very few sprinkles and that was it. Radar looked so bad...DH lowered the pool level as it had really gotten high lately. So I hope you got nothing too...but at least you are ready. c
