Tomatoes and the reconstruction of a lost recipe

I've been working for years to duplicate a recipe for an all-day pasta sauce my long deceased aunt used to make.

I am almost there. I have learned a few things, notably that tomatoes -- the type and amount you use -- are the most critical determinant in the quality of your gravy. (We always called it gravy.)

I've tested about every type of canned tomato produced, and, of course, tried many fresh types. Recently, I began to conclude that Trader Joe's canned tomaotes work the best for my sauce. They are exceedingly rich with a very thick juice in the can. You use very little, much less than you would with most other types (except some of the Italian imports, San Marzano style, which are also very rich). I use less than a fourth as much tomatoes as most recipes call for.

Just wondered what some of you have concluded in your trials of different tomatoes, if you have tried Trader Joes, and what you might think of them.
