Andee - THe unit is 1'6" deep at the right end, and 1'3" deep at the left/tv end. The fireplace has two columns flanking it that are the same depth as the left side of the unit where it meets, so there will be an easy transition point there. Not sure what we'll do with the hearth edge yet... Looks like the consensus is for dark. I think it will work! We also have a dark desk/pantry area on the wall, so when you're looking from the island you'll see a dark wall unit and this dark cabinetry which will relate nicely. Thanks everyone, you made the decision much easier!!!

If your only table space will be a banquette, keep in mind that while children love them, they get old fast for adults if you have to slide in/out and/or have to ask someone to move to get to the back. I think small banquettes are fine for very informal eating/visiting, but I would want a real table/chairs for sit down dinners, etc. As your children grow up, dinner time becomes more and more important (look up the studies). If you and your husband would be OK with sitting at the bench full-time, then it might work. Caution: Older people usually have a more difficult time dealing with slide-in (and island) seating, so if you have elderly parents/grandparents or you plan to age in place, then include that in your thinking/planning. . The next question is: Will all that you're planning really fit without creating a bottleneck or cramped space?

My reno put my range in between two windows. I decided it was ok after seeing lots of inspiration photos where it looks good. The key, I think, is having ~5" of space between the rough opening for the window and the edge of the hood. That 5" is enough room for most mouldings, or tile (if you're tiling to the ceiling), or just a sense of breathing room (the range and hood immediately next to the window would look cramped without that 5", IMO).

It looks fine to me. No one is going to stand in your kitchen and study the drawer widths. :) Your kitchen could probably handle a 24x36 work table, but not a full-blown island. Certainly not one with seating. You're wise to eliminate it.
