eastcoastmom's - granite???

I've clipped some photos of eastcoastmom's kitchen from the thread "kitchen cabinets - painted? inset?" I'm looking for the name of her granite (looks like OG or New Ventian Gold maybe). I don't see her kitchen on FKB, coming soon, or in progress, and can't find the answer in a search. Anyone who was here when she was deciding on granite happen to remember what she settled on? If you're reading this, eastcoastmom, thanks for all the inspiration!

I do not like the idea of the mudroom so far away from the door and kitchen! That mudroom is not designed properly. I think it should open into the garage. Also this forces you to walk in from garage and in front of the sink every time, unless you will yourself to walk around the stool side of island. I like the big island though. As for the architect, don't let them tellyou what you want, YOU tell them, they will make gorgeous paper plans that are not functional. You have to think like you live in it. I don't think I would want my mudroom other than with direct access to garage!

thanks for all the nice comments... Our kitchen layout was still optimal after 25 years, so it made it much cheaper and easier to update. About the appliances, the GE Monograms are beautiful and would have like to match them all together. However, their Monogram dishwasher handle stuck out too far and would block a drawer in our configuration, and we didn't like the exposed hinges on the Monogram refrigerator. We thought about all Jenn-air, but disliked the wall ovens and still had the dishwasher towel bar interference problem with the drawer. Instead, we were able to find other appliances that went well together with the ovens and had the functions we liked best. They all have some stainless steel, but either have glossy black or glossy white. Also, we tossed out the compactor and replaced it with a pullout dual waste&recycle bins with outer door matching existing cabinets along with an extra undercabinet drawer - thank you cabinet maker! We used the same cabinet maker to adjust the height above the refrigerator (new fridge was taller) and to make minor adjustments to the oven cavity to fit the GE Monogram ovens. He added those 3 drawers in front of the bar stools - we allowed a little "scope creep" here. So, we wanted to share this with others who encounter similar dilemmas when retrofitting a kitchen - we were able to mix and match appliances (or eliminate in case of compactor) and get the best of all by sticking with a few design rules and employing a cabinet maker to make a few critical adjustments. -DH of gracesantacruz

Looking to cover our 11 foot island with no seam was no picnic. It meant driving across state lines to see many suppliers. It's more common to find darker granites in the large sizes(they are denser and break less easily) , although I found a 137+ inch version of New Venetian Gold and many other large slabs as well. Not many over 12 feet, though. Selection would likely be extremely limited in that size. Don't forget, you will also need several inches extra for overhang on top of that. Unless the KD is well connected with such a fabricator, you will run across many who are unwilling to do something so large. Some places just don't have the equipment, manpower, or expertise and some don't want the liabillity. We had eight guys carrying this thing into my house and hoisting in place and they needed excellent access. With a 12 footer, I think it is quite possible you will end up needing a seam. Personally, I think that KDs ought to disclose when a seam may be needed straight across an island, before designing it that way, but perhaps yours is quite confident in the expertise of the fabricator to whom he/she is referring you. I would make sure you look at examples of the fabricator's seams - ask if they use vacuum suction and if they do top polishing. I have one seam in my kitchen, near the corner of the sink run - you can literally not feel it and it is barely visible, even if you are standing right on top. But not all seams are like this - in fact the great majority you will run into are not. If you really dislike the idea of a seam, you could also (if it's not too late) consider reducing the size of the island by a couple of feet - your selection will be much greater. I almost did that before finding a large slab in a granite I wanted. erika - Looks like your guy did a fabulous job (and a simply beautiful kitchen/family room ). I'm guessing the seam is under the basket of lemons, but that is completely circumstantial! Can I ask a very off topic question - how high is the mantle on your fireplace? We are thinking of hanging a big screen, but not sure how low we can get way with putting it. Also -how big is your screen? Thanks!

Thanks, marybeth! New Venetian Gold is pretty similar colorwise to Giallo Napolean, so I know you can relate. Totally agree with you that I want to be careful the backsplash doesn't compete too much with the granite. I also want to add some interesting elements without overdoing it. Sounds like it should be easy, right? Today I picked up a sample of honed travertine called "walnut"- it seems to coordinate well with the NVG and is a bit darker than the cabinets and a bit lighter than the wall color. I also looked at a very nice honed limestone tile -seemed too light, though maybe it wouldn't be with an enhancer. Hopefully. I will be following in your footsteps and cooking in my new kitchen very soon. Everything is in and running water is on as of today - aside from pendants and backsplash just a few other minor things left to do!

Wow, I haven't been back on here in awhile - talk about good timing! Anyway, thank you so much for the lovely compliment. Our kitchen is all done now but not yet completely accessorized ( shades, barstools etc. )so I was holding off on posting to finished kitchen. Will hopefully do that soon.

To answer your question, the countertops are New Venetian Gold. They are from Italian slabs rather than the more common Brazilian. I think they are a bit darker, more dimensional and have perhaps a bit more movement. New Venetian varies a lot from slab to slab - we looked at many.

Thanks, eastcoastmom! I was busily trying to figure out how to get photos from one thread to another when I saw that you had answered. New Venetian Gold is one of our choices. . .I'll be revisiting the slabs tomorrow and will ask about the NVG origins. I can't wait to see your finished kitchen post. Your hood, backsplash, wood choices are all very similar to mine - or I should say, mine are similar to yours! Imitation is the highest form of flattery, after all ;-)

Riverspots & annie - I still haven't figured out how to post someone else's photo, otherwise I would post one of eastcoastmom's from the other thread so you could see how lovely it is. I know about putting our photos on Photobucket and transferring them, but is that also the method for photos already on GW? Seems strange for me to put eastcoastmom's photo in my photobucket account - and maybe a little inappropriate, too?

You are more than welcome to put the photo of my kitchen in your photobucket account as far as I am concerned! My floors are oak, Early American stain - Bona Traffic top coat (between matte and semi-gloss - great product).
