lighting for cathedral ceiling renovation

My 17 X 14 sunken living room is about to be repaired for major ice dam damage. There is no light in the room except for lamps, so I plan to replace the existing ceiling fan with one that has a light. Still, more light is needed. I'm uncomfortable with the idea of recessed lights because I'm not sure how "timeless" they will be. I've got 4 wooden beams sloped from the peak of the roof down to the exterior wall on the 17' side. They end about 7' above the floor. Would track lighting mounted along the beams be my best bet? I'm like a combination of downlights for reading and accent lights for artwork. I plan to consult a local lighting store but I'd love to hear some opinions before shopping. Thanks!
