I would stay away from Craigslist. Go with Ebay or a consignment shop. Those craigslist people are kinda freaky.

View the headers on the email and run the ISP numbers.
If it's coming from overseas, it's a scam.

Actually, if it's making you think twice, then I'd ignore it completely. You have that little voice in you for a reason.

It's a common scam. Delete the email, don't respond.

When in doubt I do a search on a phrase in an email and in this case I searched Thanks for the response.I am willing to pay your asking price.I will pay you .

If it were my ad on Craig's list and I'd gotten that response from the guy, I'd write back and say,

I'm sorry to hear about your family emergency, but I cannot accept anything but cash for the dress. I am willing to wait until you are in the area, as long as you include the extra $20 (cash). Also, for your protection as well as mine, I suggest we meet in the parking lot of the local police station. Please tell me when you think you'll be able to meet.

That's the same response my son got for a car he was selling. :( btw - it's a beautiful dress!

I have had multiple responses like this which I ignore. Most want my Palpal account number and have some story about why they must send someone at a later date to pick up the item. It's all a scam. IGNORE IT!

Aside from the fact that that response sounds odd from the start--how can you sell on Craig's list safely? You have to exchange info. and/or meet the person to exchange the item and $$$. No WAY would I get involved in a transaction like that with a stranger. Read up on Charles Ng--yes, he was using want ads, but what is Craig's List, but today's version of want ads? Too dangerous to invite a perfect stranger into your home. Or to give them your information. Or even to meet them on the street.

Take the dress to a high end consignment shop, where you have a 3rd party handling the sale for you. The safety of that is well worth the few $$$ of commission you'll owe them. Stay safe.

Same email we got when we were selling a motorcycle. Scam. I hate it that people make such an effort to be dishonest.

It's a typical Craigslist scam. These emails invariably show up when a Craigslist item is listed. Ignore it.

littlebit, check out shopgoodwill.com for wedding dresses. Sometimes some very beautiful designer dresses show up there.

I get one of those every time I list something. I just ignore them, except for the one time I wrote back and told him to buzz off, I wasn't born yesterday. A serious buyer would send a much different email and would want to see it in person.

I've purchased several things on Craigslist with no problems at all. A truck topper and a china hutch. Both times, transaction went perfectly.

I remember when you posted pictures of your wedding and that dress is just gorgeous. (And unforgettable.) I'd go with a consignment shop if you have a good one in your area. Otherwise, I'd just keep it and look at it every once in a while :-)

I sold a boat last summer on CL....oh....and a 3 sided gas fireplace. I just asked for cash, said I would not hold anything and got the asking price within 3 days of each ad. :0) I also stated cash and no holds in my ads.

Why would anyone who has a family emergency be browsing Craig's List to look for wedding dresses?? SCAM!! :o)

When my son was moving he used CL to sell quite a few items but he never had the people meet him at his house, as his wife and children were there when he was at work. He had a 7-Eleven around the corner and he would meet them there. I thought this was very funny and would laugh just thinking about it. I guess it proves that the people who buy on CL don't care where the merchandise comes from. If I had someone meeting me at the 7-Eleven, I would assume it was stolen.

Try a consignment shop - it's a lot safer, and you might even get more for it.

I do not even bother buying or selling on Craig's list. Too many things can go wrong. And wow, someone on here sent you a link to find almost the exact words that the buyer used. OMG..too dang scary.

I've sold or given away probably 50 things on Craigslist. Most often the item is in the garage and the door is open, a few times people have had to come into the house. A couple times I've met people in town at their request. I've never had a problem and everyone I've dealt with has been super nice. I've also purchased lots of furniture and a car for my DD, hired a painter and movers through Craigslist. No problems at all. Yes, I have got the scam emails. The same one as Melanie and some others. If I'm not sure about it I do a search on google as Chemocurl described above.

Most definitely a scam. I'm a huge fan of CL and have always had great success with it - both buying and selling. People just need to be wise to the scammers and don't give them the time of day. Certainly, I've had my share of scammers, but they are so obvious, I delete them immediately.

I had a local woman offer me $25 extra for my posted washer if she could have it over others I heard from before her. I took the offer, she picked up the washer, and it was a done deal. You just have to be savvy when dealing with CL people.

It is interesting how we have "gut feelings" about things like this. I listed a electric scooter recently, and got really "scared" at those funny replies and took it down immediately. Then asked at an antique mall if one of the dealers there would sell it for me. The owner bought it for use in the mall. It was a small 3 wheel one rarely used ...perfect for in-store use (and $100 was a bargain) Nanny

I've never had a problem with CL, but I agree that it sounds like a scam. I only take cash when selling on CL or a garage sale. Check out a site called oncewed.com. They have a section for used wedding dresses and they let you list for free.

DD listed their dining room set on CL this week and got 3 of those messages today. A friend of her DHs said he got the same kind of message to his listing for an item for $600, and a very pretty Russian girl showed up to make the purchase with a check from her dad. Problem was the check was for $900, so she suggested he just give her $300 back and the deal would be set. He did not bite.

I have bought and sold on Craig's list and have never gotten one of those emails. All my transactions have been very pleasant. Some people have come to the house for larger items and I've met people in public places. I have also gone to their houses but always take DH with me. Must depend on the area where you live.

That sounds scary to me. I would not like to have a stranger come to my home if my husband wasn't there. I sold on EBay it was all done by email. I only took a postal money orders or a personal check. The postal money order is the only check that doesn't have to be guaranteed by my checking account. When I get a personal check I held the item until the money was in my account.

Thanks for posting the pic of your dress.. It is so very pretty...I will show it to DD tomorrow. I am not sure if the color will work with her colors. Is is a burgundy?

I have used Craigslist to buy (a dog crate) and sell (some shelving, a metal blanket rack) as well as to find someone to uproot some boxwood roots in the garden. Worked for me! And I'm no freak, despite what my family says!
